The old springs went bad and only one side was working effectively. Now it seems to be functioning much better instead of randomly disengaging.

Just wanted to say thank you, I couldn't find out how the spring and dog where setup. And your video was spot on showing this. My left rake wheel fell off, I imagine due to the bolt or pin that attaches the gearbox to the rear wheels. And the parts all exploded in the field under hay that is. Ah, but by watching your video I knew what to look for and how to repair it. I was able to find the dog, spring, washers in the field and repair it to work tomorrow. So, I wanted to thank you for making this video. Great job and cheers

Did you put a new snap ring on? There is supposed to be one in the groove to keep the hub from falling off if the gear box is disconnected. Thats what was missing on mine and caused the hub to eat the axle on the trip home.

love how you huck the old spring in the bush and say "don't loose that in the tire" hahaha that's our farm too!!! I broke a sheer bolt on my baler on the feeder arm and threw what was left in the fence line and shoved a screw driver in rapped it with twine and finished the field hahaha

That's about as good as using a ratchet handle as a hitch pin.

+Boehm Farm I'll tell you a story about that lol me and the guy I farm with were changing a tire and I was using a pipe on the old ratchet to get the lug nuts off well what happens I end up stripping the gears in the ratchet because the bolts were rusted bad and my buddy mark says "well that's a draw pin now"

+Dave O'Brien or here at home I pick up a butter knife out of the draw'er and it was bent I said to my girlfriend "who's been using that as a pry bar?

I just tore apart my (newly acquired) 256 spindles and see that I have two dogs on each spindle. So the wheels engage in both directions. I don't think that's right - should be one on the right and one on the left spindle? Is this a wrong repair by a previous owner?

Yeah, something is wrong. Each wheel might have two, but sounds like they were put in wrong.

I just finished rebuilding a $650 IH 35. Prices today are very high, and hard to find "deals" anymore. I wound up replacing the entire left side, axles, inner and outer hubs, all bearings on both axles and in the gear box. I figured since I got it apart, do it all. Whats interesting is it appears the drive hub is identical between the 35 and 256, but the driven hub is not. The 35 uses a universal pawl and coil spring on either side, and instead of the roll pin, has a castle washer and bolt. I still have to make some seals for the tine bearings as they are all worn out and water can get into the bearings, but the work on the drive train it is like a brand new machine, silky smooth. I can not find a better machine anywhere for what it cost to buy and rebuild this one. Question, what lube are you using in the gear box? Even with new seals its seepy with standard gear lube.

I think it's holding 140 gear oil. Once that leaks out, I'll fill it with corn head grease.

Where did you get the dogs in springs at. I need to replace the dogs and springs in my rake but can’t seem to find them anywhere. The model of rake that I have is a 256 like yours.

I'm glad you like us. Yes, I remember most of our action. My degree is in Agronomy, and a minor in math. I will say that I have many relatives that are engineers. You're not too terribly far from us.
