A new doula program at the Riley Maternity Tower aims to decrease maternal mortality rates in Indiana.
The risk of death related to pregnancy is higher for BIPOC patients. The Riley BIPOC doula program adds another layer of support for those patients.
These doulas offer physical and emotional support before, during and after labor. They connect with their patients prenatally to discuss their birth preferences. A doula is also present for the laboring process at the hospital and checks in after baby is born to make sure the mom has all the information she needs before going home. Additionally, the doulas check in a couple days after a patient is discharged to provide more support and guidance.
The doulas work with patients at no additional cost.
Patients must be referred by their IU Health OB or WeCare coach if they will be delivering their baby at the Riley Maternity Tower. The BIPOC doula program is open to patients who are expecting their first live birth, identify as BIPOC and expect to have a vaginal delivery.
