Frank Herbert: (scribbles reminder to go to a checkup) Brian Herbert: after discovering a lost page from my father’s notes I am happy to announce “Colonoscopy of Dune.”
I think part of the point of Dune is that humanity has stagnated, because of the oppression of the great houses. Also, how do you show a 10,000 year difference? As a society we have no basis for that. I think it has to be largely similar to the visual design language of the Dune movie
"we have no basis for that"? we know and have evidence of societies from several thousand years ago all over the world. it's not hard to discern differences from today.
@@sandrsofias you can't compare 10,000 years of our history to 10,000 years of futuristic evolution from a period in which they are already light years ahead of anything we have now.
@@earlpipe9713oh yes, ecxcrpt that kind of stagnation is completely implausible especially for an advanced civilization. Herbert just liked using big numbers for years let’s be real.
If you study ancient Egypt you will notice that they kept the same style (Art, building norms, language, gods... ) for more than 5000 years. the rapid change is a byproduct of our industrial revolution. I can buy they kept the same style for 10000 years after destroying computers.
Interesting…. Is it like: because art works couldn’t be easily reproduced it made the value of styles last longer? And take even longer for variations to be produced? Also did they have freedom of style choices like we do (for now)?
also, i read it as a subtle commentary on wealth and power. the wealthy amass enough power to stabilize their future for generations; only changing when there’s a need to change and considering how powerful they are there are few circumstances that would necessitate change.
This is a very valid point, and something modern people don't understand about ancient cultures. Rome as well was very conservative and practically had no concept of progress like we do today. They weren't even thinking about how to improve their society either via technology or aesthetically.
@@slickandslaycious6579 They had a conservative approach that favored tradition over innovation. Artists worked within established conventions that were passed down from generation to generation. As an example, statues remained consistent in appearance for millennia following the same ratios and artistic rules.
@@AlmofidBdarija Hhmm interesting…. I wonder how much of that was due to the difficulty of innovating with those types of mediums and the fact that some of those were used for historical records
The funny scary thing is the original show director for a few starting episodes thought that's more like what he wanted it to be. Maybe it's a good thing he exited the project.
Mr. Quinn, I know you are not overly concerned about race, because it has no bearing here in this space, but I am Black and you have made me proud since the early 2010s when I first found your RU-vid channel. You are intelligent and sincere in your passion for the Genres of sci/fi and fantasy. Seeing you in such a cool shirt today moved me to write you, because I know you love all types of humans, but you have pride in what your physicality is as well. Bless you and continued success! Keep them coming!✊🏿⚡️🤲🏾🖖🏾
I like how Dennis put in Asiatics like the book. I was sold when I saw the dark olive Herald and the Mentac. My favorite character was Jamis and then Kyne. I like Jamis in the sequel, then Chani.
It looks like Villeneuve’s Dune films, because David Zaslav made it that way. He got rid of the original showrunner after seeing how different this show was looking from the very successful Dune Part 1, and got a new showrunner to make this show closer to the films aesthetics. Which is why there were reshoots and different actresses left because of scheduling conflicts.
Regarding stuff looking different… ain’t these like “eternal empires” there’s gonna be slight differences but nothing massively different… they are the same exact houses.
The cinematographers on this show are Dune (Villeneuve), GoT and Dark alum. Whatever else happens…pretty confident it will “look” good. Given the limited shots and dialogue, I am also hopeful. We could do with a surprise hit and increase the fandom. 🤞 Thanks for all the good work Quinn!❤️
Dark had some amazing, ominous, dark cinematography very similar to Greg Fraser's style in some ways. Super excited just to see what visuals they come up with
@@yosh6278 to show the robot armies, im assuming they wouldn't all be done with practical effects. It just seems like it would be a lot of cgi and that stuff never really ages well
Funny how I my hopes for this are the opposite of Rings of Power. I desperately want Rings of Power to honor its source material I want Dune Prophecy to not concern itself with its source material (Brian’s books) Hopefully this show stays in line with Frank’s ideas, no evil machine empire for the butlerian jihad, less generic sci fi, etc
Quinn, I wouldn't assume that the story takes place 10,000 years in the past. She was referring to The Sisterhood beginning at that time. This is clearly closer to Paul's era. With the Corrino and Harkonnen and the water of life....there were no sand worms on Arraki 10,000 before Dune to produce that poison.
The one reason I think they are using the familiar “look” even though it is 10K in the past is to pull in the viewers and give them something familiar to hold onto. For those who have not read the books, the Dune movies have been tough to understand. Tying them together visually will help…
My approach: I'm happy about more Dune content - but I don't expect to be blown away... my expectation is to have fun watching it. For reference - I always assume any book-to-movie adaptations will be freely changed and interpreted and never expect a really close match, and that is fine with me.
Love your channel mainly because it's clear that you haven't become an angry man-child like so many RU-vidrs who start out doing lore and appreciation videos then become some political angry person who hates woke agendas and whatnot. Anyways, proud of you for staying grounded in your love for this cool shit. Cheers!
All of that. Can you believe people are already calling it woke under the trailer on Max’s YT channel. 🤦🏾♀️ like pls, STOP. I’m more concerned over the fact that the source basis is Brian’s not Frank, not because the show is going woke on us. In other words, I’m more concerned for the storytelling itself.
People use the word woke about Hollywood and somehow seem to forget that Hollywood has always been woke when compared to society at the given time. Dustin Hoffman played a cross dresser in the 80s, Star Trek had a black woman on the bridge of the enterprise in the 60s. Hollywood is the leading edge of social progress and that's no a bad thing. But change always comes with controversy and negative viewpoints.
It does look like Walmart Villeneuve, but that is what catches my eye. I loved the world he created. The choice to ape his style was smart financially and given the obvious budget it really is the only choice.
It would have been fantastic for them to create a different time period with different fashion and architecture. 10,000 years is such a long time. The source material isn't the best for these ones but I think that TV adaptation can go a long way and make a great TV show. It is hard that they use the Villenueve visuals so directly because I think Franchise Stuff gets really flattened when there aren't frequent genre switches (like how Andor in Star Wars is largely loved.) I think it is so important to not make such a huge universe feel so small historically and stylistically. I'd love to see an expansion with the design and shot style. All that said---I'm definitely trying to go in with an open mind and give it a chance without all of my Dune bristles up and judging. I'm jazzed to see what my TV-audience perspective says if I decide to quiet my judging mind. But we'll see if it allows me to lace in. I hope that I get to see how Bene Gesserit train, I love a training center.
WTF are you talking about? The Emperor Javicco Corrino only appears in this tv series... Emperor Salvador Corrino is in the first book of the schools of dune trilogy. You have no idea if this is before or after. Why is it that there are so many slow people like you that are so quick to jump to unfounded conclusions?
The Bene Gesserit are very important but one flaw in the recent film adaptation was to dismiss the influence of Bene Tleilax and the Guild. Hopefully the name change signifies a broadening of scope from the original plan.
With why things look the same after so long, perhaps that's a way to prevent the mistakes of the past, also if they are aiming for the advancement of the mental and physical abilities of humans then tech should be slightly stagnant.
This might be an unpopular opinion but given some of the previous Dune adaptations and how definitive the aesthetic of the movies is I’m glad they didn’t try to stray too far beyond that
It’s been forever, but I think House Harkonnen was disgraced because their leader fled from a Butlerian Jihad battle and the leader of House Atradies exiled him for cowardice. The two houses have been feuding ever since. Edit: I think it would have been cool if they made the past look a little more futuristic to imply that the universe backslid a little over the 10k years it takes to get to the rulership of Paul and Leto II.
Hey, Quinn! I've never read the books and have only seen the all the film adaptations but I would imagine the outgrowth of a Luddite crusade like the Butlerian Jihad would be a continuity of culture as opposed to the rapid changes technology can bring. Feudal societies tend to be stagnant ones that consolidate power in the hands of a few like the church and the nobility in our world or the Bene Gesserit and Great Houses of the Imperium. Besides, the Star Wars galaxy of 3,000 years in the past looks much like the Star Wars galaxy of the Classic Trilogy so it's not uncommon for sci-fi universes to adopt an aesthetic and stick to it for brand recognition. When Star Trek adopted the Kelvin aesthetic which radically differed from the Okuda design scheme, it was met with overwhelming criticism albeit that was only one of the many Kelvin-era problems. Anything with Mark Strong and Jihae in it will have my eyeballs on it!
around 10,000 years prior to the events of DUNE is when the spice made it's way into the empire so, it may have been the first attempts at using the spice liquor for the transformation.
If the narrating character is talking to the Harkonnen girl, then I think it's likely the narrating character, who looks like a high ranking member, is the Atriedes person who was head of the sisterhood that was mentioned.
I'm looking forward to this show. I also dig seeing this Creator's take. I also think another series could smoosh the books on the three houses in the Deneuve style at a later date such as 5000 years forward. That being said, hopefully the show does have it's own soul, especially since Deneuve doesn't plan on sticking around past Dune Messiah, the style needs to be a little more flexible in order for the franchise to blossom. Only time will tell but I remain hopeful.
They should have done the Butlerian Jihad. It is actually topical.Honestly, they shouldn't do the 'cash cow' thing. The second movie was superb and they shouldn't mess it up.They have the worlds attention (long overdue and well deserved!). Either go Butlerian Jihad or move forward to Children of Dune and then God Emperor...
I dunno. If you think this trailer looks like GoT, then the Butlerian Jihad is just going to look like Terminator. Not that it wouldn't be cool, I just don't know how the 'non-fan' would react.
BJ is nothing like terminator. Read the books. Quite fascinating characters. Some of that is still playing out in the BG narrative in this trailer because there is a split in the sisterhood related to the ongoing hatred of technology. That's a key part of the narrative and doesn't get explained here..
Of course it reminds you of Game of Thrones. Saw that in the first few seconds. Everyone wants GOT/HoT D type of show and Max is going to keep recreating that until it’s no longer lucrative.
TLDR 'I find your lack of faith disturbing' 12:55 they are gathered around a pool of water, doing some sort of ritual ceremony... the water is resonnating as if they were using the voice/chanting. 13:50 I get it, but does that look bad ? It looks pretty good, and coherant. I think they want to make it coherant with Villeneuve's visual identity, which proved to be successful accross the board. That's a no-brainer for me. 14:35 I mean... Dune is Game of Thrones in space after all... and those are good shots. nothing bad with Dune fealing like Game of Thrones... like at all The palace looks very cool! Arguably better than in the movies. 17:55 I'm super down to see the proto-bene gesserit... it's all so intriguing to me... going into the future would spoil The Tyrant... they're building a franchise for mainstream audiences, not for fans, must I remind you 18:10 Judged for it. I don't get why you're so dismissive of that line... the sisterhood is not yet deep into the breeding program, it's normal to see some outliers bringing this into question, because .... it's eugenics after all... it's quite monstrous what many of those groups do in Dune... they're preserving their humanity by becoming superhuman, often forfeiting morals, and therefore ultimately loosing their humanity... that's the irony of the overarching tale of Dune imho in the end they end up using AI navigators anyways XD 21:20 It does look safe... just like DV's first movie. Why are you taking this as a red flag LMAO XD 22:30 Actually, no there is far less brutalism and concrete walls... environments actually look more diversified 'Some shots look like they could be taken right out of Dune' and that's supposed to be a bad thing ?? 30:30 Yeah but, just like Irulan, having a covert sister in the highest seat of power is an asset of inestimable value for the sisterhood, for knowledge and influence. Irulan is a sister but does not show it. This is the start of that kind of that strategic infilitration scheme. 34:30 I bet this is the Proto-Fremen, the Zensunni nomads 34:54 you see, this hallway looks pretty different from anything we saw in Villeneuve. Reflective, warm colors, complex and detailed architecture. DV's locations were very minimalist!!! this looks a bit closer to Lynch's Lion Throne chamber. 36:35 YES!!
This is weak criticism IMO. If it was different than the new movies it would be criticized for being different. Moreover, the new movies were lauded for being visually amazing so how is that a bad thing? I don’t get it. This back story is the most fun of all of the character groups and I am psyched to see this!
My thoughts exactly - for being 10,000 years ago it’s looks far to similar to the time period in Denis’s movies. I can understand wanting to tie into them and provide some consistency in design language but you would still expect things to be quite different 10,000 years ago. Copying Denis’s style too much will actually detract from the movies in making the universe feel much thinner in believeable scope, lessening the portrayal of the movies to just a franchise aesthetic rather than an identifiable time period within the lore.
Did you watch the video? To know this takes place *10,000 years before* the Dune movie makes it look like there was no progress in civilization. Within our current A.D period our fashion and technology changed about every 100 years or so. Seeing the visuals and fashion looking the same will confuse viewers about the time period.
Yooo you should react to Megalopolis! It’s a bit outside your usual genre but I think it’d be really cool to see you talk about ancient roman politics set in modern NYC
Those ending shots with the DUNE lettering towards the end of the clip shows the locations. There is an ocean showing Caladan. There’s a snowy area showing Lancaval (spelling?), home of the Harkonen’s
It's frustrating that when they go for a different look in Rings of power to indicate it's a different age people complain because it is too different, and when they go for a similar look people complain because it's not different enough
2/3 of the Villeneuve movie takes place in Arrakis so visually we'll be ok. The walk up to the throne is 100% GOT tho. Im not mad at it GOT is a good reference to use
Check the IMDB cast list. We are getting two Harkonnen sisters, an Atreides (Kieran), a Hagal, 2 Richese, and Mark Strong plays emperor Javicco Corrino.
I would love to see a jump to the future and maybe have the story of Hereges and Chapterhouse! I would love that! I love Miles Teg and Ordrade and Taraza and Murbella! I really want them adapted some day!!!
Imagine a world where, Disney decided that ABC (which Disney owns) had more brand awareness then Disney itself and so named their streaming service ABC+ which led to a lot of people assuming ABC+ was ABC's streaming service instead of Disney's and so they would refer to ABC+ shows that have little if anything to do with ABC as being ABC shows. Later Disney decided to rebrand this service as just + as they want the service to be welcoming to all and easily recognizable especially to demographics that don't watch the kind of content ABC is known for. This is what happened with HBOMax with WarnerMedia (which later became Warner Bros Discovery) filling Disney's role and HBO filling ABC's role.
Quinn please explain to me why House Atradies had to give up the Fief of Caladan which had been their home for 10,000 years when they took over the Fief Arrakis? But When House Harkanen had the Fief Arrakis they still maintained their Fief on Geidi Prime?
As always with serialized adaptations for the small screen, everything depends on whether there is a single guiding vision for the project. "Vision by committee" is an oxymoron...
I've thought a lot about these two statues next to the throne and I think they are a representation of the Three Martyrs. The statue on the right is Iblis Ginjo: Grand Patriarch and the statue on the left is a woman with a baby so I guess it's Serena Butler and Manion the Innocent, what did you think?
I have hope they have writers and a director good enough to pull this off. What usually kills shows for me is when they attempt to make a smart character or group and they achieve it not by making them and their plans intelligent but by making everyone around them dumb. Which is also the major flaw in modern movies and television, That or they make smart people near magical and are unable to give them a non-contrived way to figure things out. But if its good hell yeah primetime scifi soap opera sign me up.
I haven’t read the Sisterhood book. Does any of this footage seem like it was pulled from the details in the book? I’m surprised you didn’t do much of a breakdown/comparison.
This is amazing to think about, but we finally have a new Dune show since Children of Dune back in 2003. And the production value of Dune: Prophecy looks like those shows, but with a way bigger budget and better technology being used.
as far i remember the 1st witch that founded the sisterhood was a scientist who suffered an accident in a lab, she became like watchmen's dr manhattan character ... right? it was on the butlerian jihad boo i think
