New Duro Crux Plus size tires!
jonesbikes.com/duro-crux-fold...
TLR / tubeless ready, Foldable bead, D-Tech
27.5 x 3.25”, foldable, TRL/tubeless ready, black, 60 TPI, D-Tech
29 x 3.25”, foldable, TRL/tubeless ready, black, 60 TPI, D-Tech
These tires are made with DURO’s exclusive D-Tech breaker technology which is an extra thin and light layer of high-strength material that wraps around the bias plies of the tire's casing, providing more strength, stability, and durability. The D-Tech breaker layer acts as a reinforcement, distributing stress and forces evenly across the casing for improved performance, and reduced risk of tread separation, punctures, and other tire damage. The Duro Crux has a thin and flexible tread section that can easily flex to absorb small bumps and ripples for a smoother, more efficient ride with more traction, on all terrain.
Duro Crux & Jones story:
In 2015 at Interbike, in the Duro tire booth, I was given a pair of prototype Duro Crux 29×3.25″ tires to try on my bike.
Here is a blog post about that trip including pictures of the tires: blog.jonesbikes.com/interbike...
Installing the tires: / 7skbq3qupz
On a bike: / 7x0aoywuqs
These were the first 29x3.25" tires I tried. The extra .25-inch width did make a difference. They had a cushier ride and excellent grip.

Riding with Duro Crux in this vid: • Jeff Jones: A Man and ...
However, they were not tubeless-ready and so I could not recommend them for our bike builds. (Tubeless, prevents most flats. It also eliminates the need for an innertube. This saves weight and gives a smoother and more efficient ride since the tire is free to flex to absorb bumps without the tube there making the tire stiffer.)
Around two years ago we started working with Duro Tire to develop the spec for a custom production run of Crux tires for us.
We now have 27.5" x 3.25" and 29" x 3.25" Duro Crux foldable, Tubeless-ready tires in stock!
The Duro Crux and the Vee Bulldozer are the only two plus bike tires that are available with a 3.25"/83mm width. They are plus, plus tires! This tire has big knobs for great traction, a supple casing, and a huge volume, giving it an incredible ride!
Rim width recommendation:
I recommend using rims that have an outside width of 50mm to 56mm so you can run air at lower pressure for a better ride while still having a stable tire for safety and control. Having lower air pressure will make a tire more supple and will create a larger contact patch with the road. This increased contact patch allows the tire to conform to the road surface more closely, resulting in improved traction, better grip a smoother ride, and lower rolling resistance. It will also be able to absorb road imperfections and shocks more effectively, as the increased flexibility of the tire tread and sidewalls allows them to flex and deform to absorb impacts. This will result in a more comfortable ride, especially on rough or uneven road surfaces. This is very good for bike pacing, mountain biking, gravel grinding, and touring on unpaved roads. It is also very nice on paved roads.
Also, with lower air pressure, punctures are less likely to happen since the tire is spreading the weight of the bike and rider out over a larger area so the tire will not press down as hard on thorns or glass compared to a higher psi that will create a smaller contact patch on the ground with a firmer and less supple tire.
Using narrower rims will make the tires narrower and will require higher air pressure to make the tire stable enough to be safe to prevent it from folding over. Also, the tire will be firmer and less supple and will result in a rougher ride with less traction and increased drag from the increased vibration being transmitted to the bike and rider.
They are 29 Plus and 27.5 Plus tires!

Good showcasing on why reasonably sized rims are a requirement for wide tires. Had friends try 29+ in 30mm diameter rims and obviously they hated it.

Thoughts on the Crux vs. the bulldozer? I am currently running bulldozers on my LWB but have been considering going back to a 29 x 3 such as the t fatty. Do the crux’s have chain rub in the lowest gear like the bulldozers do? Thank you in advance for your input.

I love both the Crux and Bulldozer. The Crux has a little better traction with its big knobs and it's very tough. The Bulldozer is lighter with a slightly wider casing and seems to be a little more supple. So it really depends on the terrain I'm riding. The Crux tires are slightly narrower but the chain may still rub lightly in the lowest gear. This won't damage the tire and it really isn't a problem, unless you are in a location with super sticky mud that may clog it up. Also, If you have a 3mm offset chainring on your bike you can change it to a 0mm offset chainring to widen your chain line to 55mm which will give you 3mm more tire clearance. With all that being said, the 3" T-Fatty is a great tire as well!

Depending on you cassette, you can delete a cog which would give you another ~4mm (depending on your cassette speed). For example, if you have a 10 speed with the following cogs: 11-13-15-18-23-28-33-39-45-51T, you could delete 13-15 and replace them with a 14T cog and put spacers on back of the cassette (to make up for the lost cog+spacing). This effectively makes a 9 speed cassette, but maintains your range and gives another ~4.35 mm (for 10 speed) of chain-tire clearance. Doing this with a 0mm offset chainring (as Jeff/Jones Bikes suggested) would give you plenty of room for 3.25 inch tires and mud.

Would the Duro 29 x 3.25" clear a Manitou Mastodon fat bike fork? Great review and demo of these tires by the way!

@Veloperator Год назад
They do fit in most fat forks, but were not totally sure, it would be best to check with Manitou. Thank you! :)

I see some Teravail Coronados on that table. What do you think of those?

They are nice tire and a great option if you are looking for something a little narrower.

If I may, I have ridden the Coronados (29x2.8) bikepacking across Spain, mix of rough stuff and tarmac. I really liked them, but the sidewalls startet weeping and the tread on the rear tyre was basically worn off after 3000km. They are comparably light, nice supple ride, but they wear to quickly considering the coast. I might get some Teravail tires again, they are really fancy, but I wouldn't bring them on a long bikepacking trip again. I rather ride something more heavy and durable so I don't have to find a replacement in the middle of nowhere.

Jeff, I see a lot of tires on the table. If you were riding the San Juan hut trip from Telluride to Moab. Which tire would you choose? 29er
@Veloperator
@Veloperator Год назад
For my bike, I'd probably choose the Duro Crux or Bulldozer. Between the two, I'd probably choose the Bulldozer over the Crux because the Bulldozer is lighter with a slightly wider casing and seems to be a little more supple.

Is 50mm external rim (halo vapour 50 rim) with 45mm internal width and rim depth 18mm size safe with the 29 x 3.25?
@Veloperator

We haven't used those rims with these tires, but it looks like they would work great, as they are the same width as one of our rims!

Is 40mm too narrow a rim for these tires if I also use tubes?
@Veloperator
@Veloperator 8 месяцев назад
A 40mm rim is not too narrow for these tires but you will need more pressure to keep them stable enough, resulting in a rougher ride. More pressure also reduces how much suspension travel you can get out of the tires compared to having wider rims that alow lower pressure. Hiya Jeff! I have two pair of the OG Crux' on two bikes. One has i64 Blizzerk and the other rolling on i45 rims. The i64 is at a good ratio of tire/rim width that doesn't lend to massive sidewall trouble. I can run 8-10 psi as an average working pressure and drop from there for silly loose conditions. The 3.25 on i64 does wrinkle most of the time but it works so well for the backcountry exploration experience I just let the tires wrinkle and hook up without sinking like the Titanic. Crux is a favorite since it works so well for a 120# cancer survivor. That is why I previously asked about the new edition of my beloved Crux. Thank you very much for having gone the extra mile in getting them back in production. @@Veloperator
