In today’s Fully Charged PLUS episode Robert speaks with New Electric founder Anne Kloppenberg about their 100% fully electric tractor conversion.
We featured this impressive vehicle briefly back in October 2021 on the main channel as part of Robert’s ‘Return of the Leaf’ episode, but we felt we’d share a bigger piece here on PLUS. The tractor has had the diesel engine, gearbox and transmission removed and is now 100% electric. Battery packs replace the area the diesel engine was housed in, and with 2 motors joined together by one gearbox, they have created double the power, up to 150 KW maximum. The tractor was designed to tow huge trailers full of building material around building sites in central Amsterdam where all combustion engines are soon to be banned.

I mean. It could pull 30 tons if the diesel engine could. Pound for pound, electric is much more powerful than an Internal Combustion Engine. So it can pull 30 tons, so the real question is, how long can it pull it for. A diesel engine….all day. An electric tractor…..maybe an hour or two.

@@kulan9379 I agree, like you, I'm a farmer, during harvest and land work, so 5 months, we work from about 10 am through to late 10pm sometimes a few days 2am, so 13 hours up to 16. This is for councils, construction workers and builders who may get to 8 hours, not farming. could you imagine trying to get harvest in then having to stop while you charge a battery, or drilling to get seed in before the rain stops everything. Eventually something will come, electric makes sense on repairs, wheel stops going round fitters come out replace motor, simple. From the point of practicality though, I think hydrogen or something yet to be discovered.

@jthomp997
@jthomp997 2 года назад
I don't disagree with you on the 2nd part, I don't think this is the answer to changing from diesel but weight is a benefit to most field work at least here in the USA. Not everything of course but most farmers have suit case weights on the front, wheel weights, fill the tires with fluid, ect.. A lot of weight helps with most jobs. Not all but at least a lot.
@danielwhyatt3278
@danielwhyatt3278 2 года назад
It feels like you could still work though depending on what kind of farm you are actually running on. If it has to go through a lot of mud, then it could be a problem unless it is boosted up in height more, which I don’t see it being a problem. But on other types of farms that just has to haul a lot of heavy stuff across rough to rain then this could very well work.

If I’m honest, there will be more electric tractors in future, but it will be methane or hydrogen that will replace the current Diesel engines, cuz because quicker to refill then plugging in electricity and is a lot lighter.

Good hope for converting 00's and newer cars. Classic cars all fine and dandy, but this! needs to be done for these mass-produced things that can still take a conversion, which would otherwise land in a scrapyard with a still-good body.... Keeping original ECUs (and as its possible, conversion mostly can keep original weight) most of the time also means, you can have something that is 00's till today's safe (airbags, safety belts tensioners etc), proper crash zones, while also being electric. Might i also say, this could keep most of parts suppliers for these cars also afloat...well apart from engine parts, but everything else? doesn't change, and still will be needed, and will need to be still made. @boxr_4214
@boxr_4214 2 года назад
why would this only last two years? teslas have reported more than 80% battery capacity retained after 150k miles and 8 year. obviously every EV and every battery is different but the "hur dur EV batteries don't last more than 2 years and cost $30k to replace" argument is getting really old. plus, these aren't being built for cost savings, it's for local emissions regulations. there is more to consider than just fuel savings when you talk about ev vs ice though. especially when we're talking about tractors, the reduced maintenance required for an EV is likely a huge advantage that increases uptime on the tractor. modern tractors might have to wait weeks to get fixed when a sensor goes bad, but EVs are going to have much fewer sensors since there isn't an engine or (as complicated of) a transmission that needs to be monitored.

Tadus from germany is building electic tractors with easy changable batteries. While the new Fendt electric tractors state to be usable for 10hours under full load. Does a +12h work day, has the tractor running all the time at 100% load? I imagine there would be downtime or work breaks 😅

interesting and something to look forward too. but the biggest problem is if it breaks down on a field. Now you have to find someone who can fix that motor, vs an engine you can fix yourself or find a local mechanic. Plus the charging overnight vs fill it with fuel in a couple minutes. Yes fuel is expensive, but will you get more life out of that battery to make up the initial cost, repairs, and maintenance.

8 hours on a trailer, but on our rototiller for potatoes our around 140kw tractor uses 400 liters of diesel from 7am to 3pm, then another 300 from 3pm to 8pm, taking about 10 minutes to fuel up. When the electric tech can replicate jobs such as that it will be a viable alternative, but until then I think we must also check out other methods such as hydrogen or methane (which has its own benefits especially on livestock farms) before we commit to electric only

I was actually surprised. 8 hours is already a ton lot if it's 8 hours really working. I honestly didn't think it was possible right now. Then you need 2 for your kind of shifts, for now.

A 360KWh battery will only give a continuous 36KW of power for a 10 hr shift. For many farm jobs that won't be enough.
@scout2nut

I question the numbers he is giving, full work for 8 hrs is his claim, I can see this thing running itself for less than 20km/hr for at most 8 hrs, but to haul 30tons for 8 hrs at what speed? I am feeling doubtful, not to mention, if this tractor was still diesel powered it could run for basically 24/7 with short breaks for refuel and basic maintenance, as an electric, one machine=8hrs before recharging for several hours, so several of these VERY expensive machines would have to be deployed to cover what one ICE machine could do before. Its neat technology, but we are a long ways off yet before its practical. Just think of how much cost and time overage the running of this system will place on any project. And that's not even talking about longevity, an ICE machine can run for decades with the original powertrain given good maintenance, just like electric cars, no matter how good of maint you give, the battery pack can only be cycled so many times before failure, and the pack will cost more than the value of the car/machine. A Tesla battery will last at most 8 to 12 years, a new battery is over $20,000 and does not look likely to be much cheaper in the future. These cars/machine are a rich mans toy or will require such heavy govt subsidies that they will never really compete on their own.

At 100hp continuous power, the consumption of tractor like this would be like 30l/hr, which would be about 360kWh worth of diesel.. With electric you'd need about half that, e.g. 180kWh. But running around town (which is a bit stupid with a thing like this) you'd probably only consume like 20% of that or 36kWh - thus 360kWh could easily go 8-10 hours.
@agt155
@agt155 2 года назад
@@rkan2 @ 100hp (70KW) output the electric tractor would be finished after 5 hours. The Diesel version would last 15 hrs on one tank full, and if that ran out could be refuelled in 10 minutes.

I'd say even days, it's designed to work 8 hours on city roads with the trailer, so my guess is after about 4-6h in the soil it would stop, and stay until towed😀. It's not a farm machine any more, for what he built it for it might work though.

It's a great idea but unfortunately the working day for a tractor or digger is a lot more than 8 hours. Harry Metcalfe of Harry Farm. Interviewed Sir John Banford of JCB and suggested the size of battery needed for a 12 or 14 hour day would make the vehicle too heavy to operate. Jcb is looking at hydrogen as a realistic solution as there is no down time for the machine other the fill up the hydrogen tank.

Allis Chalmers experimented with fuel cell tractors back in the 50s but the tech was way ahead of its time. The greens do not want hydrogen fuel cells, not because they don't work and they basically only emit water, It's because of the hydrogen, the number one source of industrial hydrogen is natural gas, the cheapest way to produce it is splitting the hydrocarbon gas into Hydrogen and ....brace yourself.....CO2, so its no better than running an IC engine, just at three times the cost. every major car manufacturer has made usable fuel cell cars but have not brought them to market because of this problem, its sad as well, because a fuel cell can be refueled in a matter of minutes just like gasoline, and if you run out on the road just get a small bottle of compressed hydrogen and get your self to a station, run out of electric and your calling a tow truck

This is really awesome, and the future is electric. However, todays diesel tractors are already too heavy for agricultural use in some countries like Norway where I'm from, so I don't think it is possible to make electrical tractors for agricultural use with today’s heavy battery technology. Tractors in agriculture does also need to have really fast charging times, so they can be used up to 20 hours a day in some periods. For those two reasons, I think the agricultural tractors in the future is electrical with hydrogen as its energy storage, but battery tractors would take over when we manage to make a lighter “super battery” that has the same energy density as hydrogen.
@JayCee2209

I think it will go towards having 10 or so autonomous small robots run by electricity on the field. If one of them fails you still have 9. With increased battery charging speed that should work well. Using these big tractors with batteries just won't work out. There are a lot of farms that use their gear 24h a day for a short period. You don't have enough time to charge
@TheJensss
@TheJensss 2 года назад
@@JayCee2209 That could be many years from now, but the soil in Norway need a lot of work, so I don't see how it is going to work. We also have hills, wet places on the field etc. so the transition to smaller equipment is many years from now

If it’s who I think it is they started out with classic boats, some of their stuff is beautiful. Removing an engine from a diesel cruiser and putting in an electric motor and batteries will become more viable as batteries get denser and cheeper.
