The cause is probobly due to brake/motor faliure. In the videos you can see that there were many people on the escalator wich caused it to get overloaded resulting in the motor cutting out. Beacause the ammount of people on it the weigt of the people caused it to "freefall" witch it then rapidly decends.

Exactly what i was thinking too. What also might be possible but maybe less likely is that the belt connecting to the engine broke which also results in the "freefall" of the escelator

The reason why escalator malfunction is that they don't maintain their escalator!

Not true, it was because escalators use DC compound motors. If one of the series or shunt field windings get flipped, and a large load is added to the motor causing an in rush of current the poles in the stator core flip and the motor reverses in what's called a "runaway".
