Dude that dialogue is obviously referring to the rival hero. If there is a character creator it’s up in the air still. Why would the MC be referring to herself in the third person? “She’s back.”

“She” is referring to the rival hero, the woman that talks at the end. IMO why would Humphrey be talking in past tense about the hero who walks up behind him in the present.

Fable has never had a character creator. Only choice between male and female.

i am 99% fable did not have a character creator at all in the original. and i kind of remember they were meant to be very average at the beginning

He doesn't actually talk about the main player though, you just supposed to think that. "She" is the rival hero we get teased at the end. "she" is back. I think it is pretty clear and even if not, we have this in other games, they just have to record more voice lines.

People, normal people don't like looking at ugly. Why do you think 98% of ppl in ads and entrainment are attractive.

To echo what another person said, regarding the sword, grabbing the sword by the blade and hitting an enemy with the hilt is an actual thing called a mordhau technique. It's a little bit of a misconception that every sword was sharpened the entirety of the blade, when in reality, depending on the time period and style, some of the blade was kept dull enough to allow for somewhat of a grip. Fighters could grab the blade in this area to either gain better control over the sword when swinging the blade or to reverse it and use the pommel and handle as a blunt instrument when that would be more appropriate. Definitely some "game magic" going on, but, as the other guy pointed out, this is actually rooted in a real life sword technique.

Nothing like the feeling of taking off your characters helmet after you forgot what you created and seeing a monster.

A few notes: Fable never had a character creator. You could only choose male of female character. You could modify your character in-game by changing hairstyles, bulking up (fat or muscle), changing outfits, etc. The character's appearance would also changed based on gameplay & the choices you made... My take on the "she" in the line, "she's back" is Theresa. Finally, my main critique about this trailer is that the game looks darker than other games; Fable was always a bright, vibrant world, whereas this has a grittier color palette... Also, it looks like this game will have a voiced protagonist, which (unless I'm mistaken) is another departure from the 3 prior games...

I respectfully disagree, If people do not like the look of the character people are going to be far less inclined to play the game, We are a visual species after all, why do you think people spend so much time and money on character designs and visual advertising not to mention the constant desire for a character creator. Their is that and their is also the problem with people currently designing characters specifically to spite gamers as a whole which people are sick of.

If i have to look at your face for multiple hours of cut scenes, should i not enjoy the face? Call me shallow, but i do genuinely believe God of War would've sold significantly less if Kratos was fugly.

This is going to be a character I have to look at for hours and hours. If I have to look at anything or anyone for that long I'd at least appreciate them being easy on the eyes regardless of which game it is or what their gender is

The first game had you only playing as a male character. Fable 2 was when the game started to let you choose yor gender. I think most people tend to forget that. But if the story and game itself is still good; then ill still be happy

Fable 2 was one of my favorite games back in the day, I didn't think I'd even think about playing this one but, I've been following it since that frog and fairy trailer and my nostalgia's really kicking up. Here's to hoping its really good.

The "rival hero" is the "she" Humphry was talking about the entire time, he was never referring to the protagonist.

My problem is not this girl, my problem is that second time in a row they show something that doesn’t look like gameplay but more like a pre-render. Which kinda looks fishy. Also don’t really believe in 2025 release tbh. Gonna wait for more detailed gameplay showcase, something like new DA did.

i think its clear from the Heroes line at the end that the narrator is talking about the rival hero. Doesnt neccesarily mean you wont be locked in as a female but it leaves it open ended in my mind

Idk maybe I'm just a weirdo but i don't agree with the sentiment that if the game is good then the look of the character doesn't matter. If I'm gonna put any amount of time into a game I want to like the look of the character I'm playing. Especially in an RPG where you are supposed to build and expand upon the character you've made for up to hundreds of hours. It's why I sometimes put hours into the character creation. Easiest way around it is ofc to just have a character creator that gives players the ability to choose their own look. And yes I know that Fable has never had a character creator but by the time it comes out we'll be pushing 2026 so maybe its about time. Would be disappointing if they didn't give players a choice in a game series all about choice.

She's probably just the default character like Fallout 4. There's probably a character creator

I believe we have just gotten use to the fact that games are just not built the way they use to be. It's crazy when a company with Millions of dollars can't put something into the game as little a character creation? Doesn't matter weather or not the old games had it, its been a decade they had time to think about something that small don't you think?

The lines about knowing a female hero before etc, I heard more as him talking about a previous student (Most likely the "rival hero" who has "come back", who we see at the end). I think the reason they showed the player character during that diologue was most likely because they didn't want to spoil too much of the rival, but also as a way of mirroring them. Fable has always been about choice and morality, so it could be their way of saying "I knew someone like you once, but SHE made the wrong choices."

Side note. Fable has never had character creation… in 1 you play as the boy. In 2 and 3 you pick the boy or girl. But they are all set characters. You can change hair and clothes. But the models have always been set in stone. This is just a modern version of playing the sister from 2 or 3. lol. I don’t know why people are so mad.

Fun fact : blades like that didn't have super sharp edges back then it was a combination of making it sharp enough to intentionally cut with with and each not too thin and sharp to chip away too fast because if you made it too sharp it would chip faster and be easier to break hence why you find that most kills were from aiming for soft vital spots and stabbing And yes some swords they work like that it's an actual sword technique used for when you need to a blunt object to bypass armour that's stoping the blade swings and jabs

As the one who's never know about any Fable games, I can't agree at all that this looks promising. Not until they show the gameplay later.

Fable has never had a character creator. Only the ability to choose male or female. You CAN customize their hair, tattoos and clothing but that was it.

I honestly don't care that the character is ugly...I care more about why they made her ugly....it's on purpose and a trend in games that I don't want to see more of.

i agree with almost everything luke is saying, except the part of being shallow for not playing a game if you don't like the way something or someone looks. People can play a game (or not) for whatever reason there is. the only problem is saying that the game will be objectively bad because they don't like it. And you implying that the aesthetics of something are not important is a bit wrong, i think. I loved the trailer an video btw, i just felt that you tried to tell people what they should like and is not very nice.

The graphics are probably legit. Playground Games made the Forza Horizon games, and they were beautiful. It could also explain why the game is taking so long, considering it is their first RPG

Bro the her is the antagonist. He is basically just telling your character that he knew a girl. But when he describes her, they show your character doing similar things as the girl he once knew. This is diversion tactics from the creators. Im sure there will be character u can pick and hopefully you can customize hair, clothes and such similar to gta6 you have two set characters but u can customize them somewhat

When Humphrey is referring to she He's not talking about your character. He's talking about the antagonist. Because at the end, your character says oh, she's back, meaning the person he was just talking about

Fable looks fantastic, I can’t wait to learn more. But if it plays as well as it looks, and has a great story, could be a critical hit. The model looks far better this time than last year, but I still think there should be a character creator, or at the very least multiple preset options

I appreciate Luke's consistency. He cares more about the gameplay than the look of the player character. Same as his take on Stellar Blade when the issue was about that MC being too sexualised/attractive.

He's talking about the villain, not the hero in the trailer. So I think a character creator is still on the table.

Do I find the main character bad? No, she looks fine. I will be annoyed if there is no character customization. Fable is well known for your character changing their weight, appearance, and even age depending on your decisions. After so many years, it would be a very dumb idea to not have character customization. But as Luke pointed out, stuff like that will probably be revealed later

It’s the reason that they put it in there.

Its very possible that youll be playing as this character weve seen in the trailers, but id bet that youll be able to customize the appearance (makeup, hair, clothing, tattoos etc). If that were the case, id be fine with it. As you said, as long as the game is good.

I think its a super valid reason. As the consumer you if you want the character to look pretty or you would not play it is completely reasonable. If this product wont supply your wish tonlook at a pretty character another one will. Go and play that instead.

As long as it nails the core of Fable, which is the fantasy hero setting with British humor, and choices with character and world altering consequences, then I'm happy. The Fable games walked that line where you had dark themes, but you could also fart someone in the face, so if we can at least get some of that without being waterboarded with current year politics, it'll be a good time at least.

Also grabbing a blade like that is an actual Move in fighting

I mean how is it that in 2025 we can’t have a custom creator in an RPG? I don’t care if it’s a silent protagonist or if it’s like fallout 4 with a male/female VA. If it’s an RPG, I want to customize my character. And yea, I’m gonna be mad about how she grabs the blade of the sword. Grabbing an arrow was fine cause you could suspend your disbelief, but the sword thing was awful. It’s like if I want to shoot a guy with a gun but not kill him, I would put myself in between the barrel of the gun and my enemy and pull the trigger. I’m intentionally hurting myself more just to hurt this guy slightly less. It just makes your protagonist look stupid

Humphrey is referencing the rival hero, Not the playable character. I really don’t care if the went the fixed protagonist lane. (I think she will be fine). The gameplay loop, choices, combat and story are what matters.

Holding the blade part of the sword is a real technique, some tapestries show it being used. 🤓 I believe it was used against armored individuals, because blunt damage is better. 🤓

They kinds tweaked her look a bit. She looks less ugly now.

According to a sword historian on RU-vid, it actually wasn't that uncommon to grab a sword by the blade. They just didn't grip the edge.

Even if you could customize the character,i doubt the option will even look good

Grabbing the blade is a real technique, it’s often called a murder stroke. And the reason you can do that is if you apply your grip it a way that doesn’t allow the sword to slide you won’t cut yourself. RU-vidrs that know more about this than me would be Skalogrim or schologladiatoria if you are curious.

They changed the appearance slightly from the trailer one year ago, made her less ugly a little

I mean cyberpunk used a protagonist in the trailer and you still got to create your own character. Fable may be the same

Luke, you said it yourself: games are escapism and if we're going to look at the escapism for hours we want it to look good i.e not ugly. It's not our problem they can't get this right. I honestly think you fell for whatever narrative they're going for instead of seeing the real issue here so the problem in that regard is you. Hope the gameplay is good though. You're right on that

"I don't care, if the game is good". Luke, I'd agree with you for something purely gameplay-centered like Dark Souls. In those your character totally doesn't matter. But in a narrative, character-driven game like that the quality and appeal of your actual playing character is part of the "game being good".

It’s called half swording and is a common practice. If you place the blade in the creases of your finger joints and wrapped tightly, it creates a good grip, plus swords don’t need to be overly sharp because they have weight behind them.

who walks into a store to buy a game anymore? last time i bought a physical game was Witcher 3. Did Fable 3 have character creations? Cant remember.

As others have said, you missed the context of everything Humphry was saying. It sounds like he's referring to the protagonist, but the sting at the end is meant to recontextualize everything he just said. He was actually referring to a previous apprentice who, in his view, made all the wrong choices and was both powerful and terrifying, which in Fable terms means she was Evil. What you're supposed to then draw from that is that the protagonist is basically mirroring that previous apprentice and has the potential to go down the same path, but he's not referring to her directly which does leave some room still open that there could be an alternate protagonist choice. And when the NPC's are talking to the Hero they used neutral terms which would cut down on the writing requirement for alternate protagonists, including non-binary individuals. I think what hurts most is that people just want information from the devs to assuage any concerns they may have or confirm their fears so that they don't spend the next 6 to 7 months until the inevitable Developer Direct being anxious about what may or may not be part of the game. The devs are just radio silent and they're not helping. Also, some people pointed this out, but the developers did tweak their marketing Hero's face a bit. Personally I think the hair is what does the character a disservice and if they just changed that then the reception to the design would be a lot better in my opinion.

Don't care how great the game is if I don't like how they made the main character look. Then I will not buy it.Why? The cutscenes .

Tbh i won't play it if i can't play a character i like. I identify a lot with the characters i play in these style of games. So if i can't make my own character or play one i find both visually appealing and appealing as a character then i won't play it. I refused to play TLOU2 due to having to play as Abby.

The tone set by the different trailers is interesting in its inconsistency. This ones humorous, the first one has a fairy literally being swallowed alive by a frog. That's horrific. It's weird to have something like that in a trailer if there isn't going to be that kind of content in the game. The comments you made about the characters appearance I agree with to a point. But some people have to find the player character appealing to enjoy the game. I didn't finish Red Dead 2, or play a God of War or a Batman or Mad Max game because the characters just don't appeal to me, and I think thats valid. Actually , with Red Dead 2 it was that and all the murdering. Mostly the murdering. And also, if you look at the model for the character she's absolutely gorgeous. Why hire a very attractive model for the character and not make her look like that in the game?

Of course they have a character creator, it’s so easy. It will solve all their problems with the bad character design, become the one of the best games ever made like BG3. Oh wait.. they don’t?

As a PlayStation guy, this is one of the only xbox games I care about. I like forza horizons, and fable. Gears could be cool too but im not liking the no release window. And i dont think the character will be solely a woman. I think you can choose a gender and heavily customize said characters.

Don't care if the character looks good. They have to be believable in the role they're supposed to play in the game. If they make this chick an insufferable asshole girl boss (like Galadriel from rings of power) people will be pissed. But considering it's a fable game, the role your character plays SHOULD be up to you.

I love character creators. Fable never needed one though. They still allowed a lot of customization and tailoring for your characters appeareance. Hopefully it still does but probably doesnt. Fables are so cool but always underwhelm. Maybe this one will finally hit the mark.

I am not writing the Game off. I just prefer playing RPG's as a Male Character. That is why i hope there will at least be a Gender choice.

Seems like the "gameplay" is in engine sure but too isolated to actually be from the game. Literally just the attack and damage animation. I don't know. I hope it's good.

If Kratos had a bit of bad teeth or jaw, I wouldn’t have mind, but if big corps decided to shove that look in every major game down my throat then it’s definitely a NO. Call me shallow but I’m not a fan of them shoving stuff.

I would prefer a character-creator but Hogwarts Legacy also was showing a single character for majority of their ads so maybe that is the case here.

I dont think that the rage is in particular because a character is ugly, more so because its a part of an agenda that people dont appreciate. For example we see so many games trying to push forced diversity to stories that it doesnt make sense in just like how western companies are forcing each female lead to be very mean and ugly everytime. It just gets annoying when you see it in a game now because you feel that this is just the start and that this game will bring more agendas in it. I dont believe that if it was a singular case that people would freak out that much rather its a trend now.

The game looks gorgeous. As far as the player character is concerned, I really couldn’t care less. She looks fine from what I can see. Hopefully they have a character creator for people that are hung up on her looks, but at the end of the day that isn’t an issue that bothers me.

I’ll play the game if it’s good regardless. But I want to be a male version.. with male amour and customizable options

Her face didn’t need to be changed. It’s that hairline and that massive forehead. You could project a 4K imax movie on that.

Also remember that even WITH a character creator sometimes it's not possible to make your female character anything other than ugly or plain at best in a lot of games these days. In many cases they're purposely uglifying female characters in this current time And I disagree that not playing a game because you don't like how the character looks is shallow. It's a legit reason in a role-playing game. That's a big part of a role-playing game, playing a character that you like, including looks, and will look at for a 100+ hours. I have always spent a very long time in character creation my whole gaming life, it's a big part of the experience for me. Plus there's so many great games to play and limited time, so I'm fine with giving my limited time to a different game based on varying reasons including this.
