I also loved The Winter People! Like you mentioned, I think a lot of the negative reviews come from people's expectations. I tend to call it a thriller, because I find a lot of people automatically give horror books lower ratings if they don't find them super scary. (This is a pet peeve of mine). I much preferred the historical timeline over the present day. I read it over a super snowy weekend and remember thinking that it was very atmospheric. I've read a few of McMahon's other books, but I didn't think her other books were as strong as this one.

I finished The Winter People in roughly a day and I absolutely loved it! Thank you for your review and I'm glad that you liked it, too.

I really loved The Winter People. I still have only read that by Jennifer McMahon. I've got to read more! I just loved flashing back to an earlier time (I love historical fiction!) and it truly felt so creepy. Also, you should totally renovate an old victorian house. I feel like you'd be the perfect person to do it because you'd keep all the character!!

Late to the party (well, this video of yours) but glad to have found it. I LOVE Jennifer McMahon and "The Winter People" was definitely my favorite of her books. Have you continued by reading more of her work? She's a fellow Vermonter and I hope to run into her someday in real life.

It's a pretty well known book, but I really liked Slade House by David Mitchell. For a less literary, more "fun" horror novel try Horrorstör about a haunted Ikea-type store.

I would recommend Ghost Story by Peter Straub. I read it years ago and it's still one that I remember well. There was also a movie made starring Fred Astaire that was very well done.

A Hollow Dream of Summers End by Andrew Van Wey was creepy and enjoyable. It follows three children who are being stalked by a creature from below their treehouse.

"Kill Creek" is a perfect horror novel about a haunted Victorian house. You can find plenty of affordable Victorian houses in small town Pennsylvania but you will be living in the middle of nowhere. Franklin W. Knox House in Coudersport, PA is the creepiest Victorian house I've ever seen but it is being renovated so it does not look as dilapidated as it used to.

Dang! I had my hands on this at a used book store for $2... and I put it baaaaack! 😢 I’ll go back as soon as I can to get it if no one has beat me to it. I just didn’t know what to think of the intro on the jacket, but now that I know it’s got your approval, I waaaaaant it! 🙌🏼

I just finished the book. I can say it's a mix of horror, thriller, mistery. I actually did enjoyed the book. The only thing that slowed me down it was the back and forth in time. I liked how all the characters are different from each other just like in real life. I ordered 2 more books by her and i can't wait for The Invited at the end of this month.

I've read this book RUINS by SCOOT SMITH, for me it was terrifying but it's not the kind of horror from this book! It also has a movie, maybe you already know it, but i just loved it.

Ahah! the book is so so so much better, even tho, i liked the ending of the movie just because it was different! i can also say some stories from lovecraft - because u liked annihilation (im currently reading) - maybe you'll like lovecraft i recomend The Whisperer in Darkness! it's my favorite :)

Sorry I'm just now commenting on this video I've just now watched it. I loved The Winter People so much that Jennifer McMahon has become one of my favorite authors! I adore her writing style and the fact that her novels seem to always have an ethereal other worldly feeling to them. I now own all of her novels except Burn Town which I have yet to pick up. Since you enjoyed this one I definitely recommend her novel, The Night Sister. It's very good as well. So far those are the only two I have read by her but I want to check out the others I've purchased really soon. Another author I would recommend is Wendy Webb. She also writes horror paranormal type novels set in old Gothic homes around the Great Lakes. She's my absolute favorite author and my favorite novel of hers is, The Vanishing. I really want to start making BookTube videos for my channel and it would definitely be in a similar vein as yours as I am a huge Horror buff when it comes to reading. I'm not so much a thriller person so much as I love novels set in old houses or hospitals that usually involve spirits or ghosts of some sort. I'm just a bit discouraged because I don't have a lot of natural light to work with and where my bookshelves are located I can't really sit in front of them to film. Plus, I work full time and my schedule always changes so trying to find time to film would be somewhat daunting. I know I just need to jump in and do it though so hopefully I will soon. This was a great video and I can't wait to see other books you recommend to put on my reading list.

I made a least favorite books of 2017 video and never got around to uploading it, but this book was my least favorite. I read it for a book club and would have DNFed if I didn’t have to finish it. I agree that it was too slow paced and the jumping of storylines was confusing. The only thing that really creeped me out was the closet! -Mel

1. The house in the first picture you showed reminds me of the Winchester House and 2. I've heard of this author before, I came across a book by her titled Don't Breathe A Word, which I think its a horror (or scaryish) book involving Creepy fairies, I did see another one of her books titled Burntown (which has a similar cover to The Winter People) on Goodreads, but I don't know what's it about

This sounds so interesting. Side note: from following you on Instagram I thought of you today when I accidentally smashed my arm on the side mirror of the car parked next to me and the driver of said car watched me do it from the front seat. I kinda threw up my hands and mouthed sorry. He looked at me very annoyed but kinda waved me on. Worst part of the story is that this was at my kid’s therapy center that I’m at every day and will most definitely see this guy again. Gonna try to park anywhere but next to him. 😬

I just finished it I thought the ending was kind of cheesy, I really liked the mystery of what caused these tragedies and then when it was fully explained it felt like a middle school rumor like bloody Mary.
