After the release of the VW Basecamp Atlas concept vehicle... we decided to pickup a 2019 4Motion SEL Premium Atlas and create our own Overland OC edition. In today's video we outfit our Atlas with fifteen52's latest Traverse MX Wheels paired with Falken Wildpeak A/T3W's (265/70/17).

What size wheel and tire would you recommend if you didn't want to lift the car or add spacers? I would love this configuration, but I don't want to void my factory warranty.

I've looked at the basecamp rims for some studded winter tires but imo they look terrible for off road duty in general. And that is for one simple reason, they have all those little "pockets" around the rim that look great at holding mud sand and snow and causing an imbalance. Bonus is they look to be a pita to clean out as well as no brush other than a toothbrush is going to get into each one and get the mud or other stuff out. My criteria for winter rims or any in fact is ease of cleaning with few nooks and crannies for stuff to hide in. These fail spectacularly :)

Surprisingly, I haven't had any issues cleaning out my wheels. I have a pressure washer and usually clean my wheels off the following day after some fun in the dirt, mud or snow. The 1552 Traverse MX are well suited for what I'm looking to do from an off road perspective and they do look handsome on the Atlas. There are several other options that are available, but I choose these wheels to closely mimic the VW Basecamp Atlas concept at the time. Now that VW has released their official Basecamp trim... the 1552's are the OEM wheels that they are using. What winter rims did you end up with for your rig?

Nice video. Did you have any rubbing at all after 1.5" lift? Was any fender trimming necessary?

What type of off road rim and tire configuration could you get if you didn’t want to add a lift to the vehicle? I love the rugged look on the Atlas!

Same wheel. Just get smaller tires: 260/70/17 might do the trick. Hit me on IG DM for a discount with Fifteen52.

This may be a dumb question but if I do this exactly as you have it but only use the wheel/tire combo when I go camping and put the stock wheel/tire combo when in the city would I need an alignment every time I switch them? I know I need an alignment and adjustment for the 1.5" lift. Do you see any issue with this plan?

I also would like to know this
@OverlandOC
@OverlandOC 2 года назад
No, bc the wheel setup I have going from 20s to 17s is nearly the same tire size as OEM so no need to align. But then again… once you make the switch just stick with it bc it looks better (IMO) and also gives your Atlas more versatility being able to handle the road and go off road whenever you want.

What do you think the wheels and tires and lift did to your fuel economy? Really interested in those things without adding anything to the roof.

Did you need wheel spacers

Do you know if these will fit without the 1.5" leveling kit?
@OverlandOC
@OverlandOC 3 года назад
You will need some sort of lift in order for these to fit without rubbing. Either raising springs or lifting blocks will do the trick.

How much to these tires impact gas mileage?
@MayorOfOC
@MayorOfOC 3 года назад
Haven't noticed much drop off at all... The reason I selected these tires was to keep them as close to the stock ride and sound and they have delivered on both fronts. If anything, my gas mileage varies due to the RTT on top of my ride, but it's worth having the flexibility to pop up and camp anywhere and anytime. When you installed prior to your lift, did it rub at all?
@masterela

There's something wrong with your setup, rims width is just 8 inches and the approved rim width for your tyres is from 8.5 to 11 inches. Most professionals suggest a 9.5 rims for 265 tyres, so how is it working for you ?

So far the wheel and tire combo has served me well. I have went on various trails and hung in there with other true 4x4's. The clearance of the 2019 Atlas allows me to push the vehicle a bit harder... but I know it's limitations. The prototype Basecamp Atlas has the exact same setup as my rig and that's the blueprint that I utilized when building out my overlanding platform. The Falken Wildpeaks (265/70/17) have given me zero issues in dirt, rain, mud and more recently in the snow. The tires performed as intended and gripped the various terrain as expected. Hope that helps... I've recommended this setup for other Atlas owners and they have all shared the same experience with the combination. Cheers!

Thanks for the feedback. Glad you're enjoying your setup, I'm going with same wheels as yours on Black Rhino Boxer 17" (9" width), I'll feel more confident lol

Question. Are these actually 265? We got the same and tried to get them mounted and they told us that they were too big and would rub like crazy

Suspension received a slight upgrade with H&R Adventure Raising Springs lifting my ride 1.5 inches. Everything else remains stock for now as I'm working on getting a full suspension kit prototyped. No spacers were required for my build. I may do that if I decided to add fender flares in the future. It's something I am looking into...

What are the specs of your new tires? I know you mentioned them but if you don’t mind to drop them here it would be nice 🙌🏻. Also did you used any spacers or leveling kit? Or everything else remains stock? I am not sure if I should go 265 or keep it 255. I think 265 will give a nicer look, but still undecided. Doing research to avoid tire rubbing. Thank you

Hi Luis... I went with 265/70/17 Falken Wildpeak A/T3Ws matted onto fifteen52 Traverse MX wheels. I also have a 1.5 inch lift courtesy of my H&R Adventure Raising Springs. The springs are needed as you will definitely get rubbing on the front tires if you do not lift the vehicle. No spacers...
