The team over there designed this as an homage to the great and wonderful late Gerry Finch and wanted me to give it a look. I was happy to offer them (and all of you) my thoughts on it. Enjoy! 👍😁👍

I re-purposed my old eyeglass cases to store my lock picks.... but I like this new Finch case better. That's really nice.

having a clean surface that is included as a part of the pick case where you can put tools and the lock you are working on when your out in the field is a nice addition.

I do like the wrap around wrist idea. Also yes one of those pockets needs to be able to hold a card(like you did by removing the stitching). Another reason for a card holding pocket is that a rigid piece of plastic could be inserted in 1 pocket to stiffen the whole package if that's something someone would want. Swapping the snaps might also have another benefit. The snap that is inserted can be mirrored on both sides of the fabric(so that both sides can be used for insertion). If the inserted part of the snap were mirrored on the closing flap that would allow for wrist wrapping without having to fold over the fabric to get the snaps oriented right.

This got me thinking... A miniature tool roll with some toggles could make for a great case, thin and flexible to fold or roll for storage and transport, and you could unroll it and wrap it around your wrist to use on the job. Instead of sewing you could have the flap held with a strip of Velcro, so the pocket size is adjustable to fit whatever tool you're storing there.

This video has me debating calling my Grandmother at lunch and asking if her sewing machine still works. Im fairly confident what I remember from Home Economics in High School (passed with an A-) that I could design and sew together a flexible folding case. I know I possibly could make a heavy duty case if Grandma still has a serger. It would be something different to do in my free time and maybe a project that my Grandmother would participate in. Now I got my mind on types of materials to use.

The Law of the Purse: "the contents of the purse will expand to occupy the whole purse". This law was discovered by observing ladies purse use. It applies to all containers. Conclusion: if your objective is to carry less get an opera purse or its equivalent.

As a student of package engineering it seems that supple leather that will stretch and comfort to your tools wood be the ideal lockpick case. A zipper closure like your old case also seems ideal

This looks like a universal constant 😁 The same goes with warehouses - stored stuff will occupy all available space. The same goes for the toolbox. That's wy I deliberately picked a smaller case for my tools, so I couldn't force too much stuff in there 🤣 I wonder if this was included in the original book of Murphy's Laws? 🤔

Based on leatherwork I have done, yes the stiff cases will have a plastic stiffener inside them. I really like the clamp to the arm part. Reducing it down to just four half snaps but arranged so it can snap shut left right or top bottom would allow you to close it or wrap it round your wrist. Replace the pockets with wide elastic webbing and you can expand them as needed for thicker tools. Leave the rearmost pockets full width to take a card or two and the ones in front can be stitched to separate tools a bit. Maybe add a third shorter row for shorter bypass tools.

Why not use some spandex/nylon/etc for the pockets? I know you'd have to double stitch because the material won't be as durable, but it would let the pockets lay flat and take some girth. My pistol bag came with a giant slab of velcro on the actual zippered pouch, with a few plain backed velcro strips. I'm sure the intent was for patches and the like, but I've been using them as a customizable storage with extra bits of velcro. I figure doing the same thing here might be smart. Presently, I have my Hoppe's bore snake, a punch, two boxes of ammo, a baggie of foam earplugs, and a flashlight. My pistol doesn't have a rail and I don't like what they do to the weight balance, it shifts my instinctual pointing off target.

I think you hit the nail on the head, there - just above a normal size credit card in either of the two sides of the top panel. Shouldn't add much more to the cost, would be invaluable for keeping shims, ID cards or other tools found in that form factor. Other than that it's a great product from the looks of it, can 100% see myself tempted by one.

I just got a small armorer's punch roll to use as a pick case. Great so far. Was like $7. Has 14 little pockets (each can hold two Peterson picks), an elastic retention strip, just the top folds over, and the whole thing rolls up tight and small, and holds shut with velcro.

I would consider adding a single card-sized pouch to the back, for easy access. Keeps all your tools in place so you don't need to unfold everything to get your card out, plus it creates a point to customize from.

Your suggested edits and make it about an inch wider on either side to where it would be able to more comfortably hold a full complement of everyday tools and still be pocket-sized, and maybe a small sewn-in magnet on the flap for parts retention.

I know others have said similar things, but keep the base layer pocket. But the upper one with a stretchy elastic band would be great for shoving larger things like Dev's key holder, or the CICP. Or even make the pocket out of an elastic fabric. It might not hold up as well with heavy use, but as an option to have I think it would work well.

The problem with cases, is that we all want something different. That case as way to much wasted material with that fold over, I thought it was going to be a book style with 4 places for picks. The wrist feature could be done with elastic. So right on the tight pockets, but I do like some stiffness as I don't want my tools to get bent. One option is to have two cases as I prefer to have picks in one case and bypass in another, but everyone is different. BTW Did you see that new musical group, The Grey Man Group. No? Neither did I.

If you skip the pocket stitching in favor of skinny strips of velcro, and a full width velcro back you cold lay the tools down, tuck them in by pressing a velcro strip and then repeat. However capacious a pocket you might need.
@derbmed1

I would change the stitching. You modified the one side but I would also change the little ( left front) from the 2 rows ( 3 sections) to one row (2 sections) to increase versatility.

I want some space in pockets too, I have some not-totally-flat tools and I'd like something fairly easy and minimalist on pocket that fits them. This Finch case is close. Like the idea of alternating snaps though, because I don't need to double up on snaps either.

Not brand bashing, but it seems like the vast majority of cases are made for Sparrows-esk no-handle tools; but now we have laminated CI, molded JLs, and all manner of home made/3-D printed handles.

I wonder if a flat magnet could work on that one top part? Out of all my cases I still like my roll up case. That Finch case does have a similar format where everything lays flat like a roll up though so it's a maybe.

Great review, thanks for covering this. I think I’m in your camp, preferring fewer bigger compartments and flexibility rather than many small tight areas. Besides maybe seeming more tacti-cool, and providing a way to sell/attach patches, I wonder if the rigid cases maybe have wearer protection in mind. If you bend over, you might prefer one rigid case reminding you of your tools being in that pocket, then several hooks, files, etc. poking into you. Also in defense of tight stitching (again not my jam either but trying to understand why it might be common), if they have looser stitching they’ll probably get people complaining about tools falling it so it might be impossible to please everyone on that. Generally I suspect that as people actually use their tools more, they probably move from tight rigid many-compartment cases to looser flexible let-me-organize-into-few-big-groups cases but that’s just speculation.
@Tarkov.
@Tarkov. 4 месяца назад
Guessing they make the cases stiff so they can be thin but not bend, last thing you want is to mangle up your picks. EDIT: Can't you just rivet a new snap on the bottom so you can flip it? just drill out the old one.

Making the internal pockets with the same material as the case itself is generally a mistake, should use a different thinner and more flexible fabric for the pick pocket sleeves. Also, the card pocket you seek could easily (and better?) be sewn into the internal flap area when folded the first time. Those are my thoughts as I watch...
