Hello everyone. It has been a while since we highlighted the old Schuylkill and Susquehanna Railroad. This weekend gave us the opportunity to do so. With my weekend being spent at the Schuylkill County fairgrounds, who's entrance way is built on the railbed, It was a no brainer to look for something cool.
Originally built as the Dauphin and Susquehanna Railroad in 1854, this was built to haul coal from Lebanon County PA to the PRR at Rockville PA. It would be reorganized as the Schuylkill and Susquehanna Railroad in 1859 and would run from the Rockville PA area east to the Philadelphia and Reading at Auburn PA. The Philadelphia and Reading would take over operation of the line in 1872 and it would become the Schuylkill and Susquehanna branch of the Reading. After a bridge fire near Pine Grove PA the road would be abandoned by the Reading. This was in 1939. Let's take a walk and I'll fill in the gaps. Thank you for watching. 7/7/24

As an archeologist who has mapped and recorded 1000s of miles of historic railroad grades and forgotten ghost towns in wilderness Pennsylvania, I was so impressed with this video I subscribed to your channel. Keep up the excellent reporting. I will be watching

Thank you Eric this is a most flattering compliment! You must know as well as I that this is so much fun. The amount of work and effort that went into building these roads is fascinating to me. Without them this country wouldn't have had the growth and prosperity it had. Not just on an industrial scale but also the private sector. Being able to go from place to place on rails must have remarkable for the folks that experienced this when it was new. Granted it's history is not all rainbows and gumdrops but it's a fantastic history that disappears with each new housing development and strip mall that goes up. Hope I can keep your interest. Have a great day.

😆About a year and a half ago I stepped on a ground hive. Got me three times before I even knew what was going on. My legs were going so fast that my body couldn't keep up. Probably looked like a Tom & Jerry cartoon.

@@kevinsalsbury2118 Had the same a few year back just cutting grass in my back yard. Bad on their part. With in minutes I dumped gasoline in that hole after it sat for a minute I put a match to it!!! No more yellow jackets. Then a couple years after that. I was out there cooking on the grill with my dog and saw him chasing something on the ground and then jerking his head back and it miner bees. First encounter in my 60 years of life. He got nailed on the snout a couple of times until I saw what was going on and put him in the house. They had several holes and were black with very small greyish white bands. I read up on them and this particular species rarely comes out of the ground. It's like several year cycle or something like that, so I kept an eye on them and sure enough a couple days later the were back in the ground or just moved. The females have their own nests but the males will nest close by and can grow up to 10,000 bees. I have no clue how many are down there. I have never seen them again.

@monmixer There nasty little things. Worked on a ski mountain quite a few years back. In the summer we would come upon a hive once and a while. Gave them the gasoline and match treatment as well. Looks like they got their revenge on me after all lol. I constantly am looking down this time of year. Don't want another lesson in this department. Stay safe and have a great day.

I have found that during the late Fall, after a 1.0" or less snowfall is the favored time of year to spot these features w / summer being the worst conditions to ID.
@kevinsalsbury2118
@kevinsalsbury2118 8 дней назад
Agreed. A fresh snow highlights the grades perfectly. Lack of foliage is even better. The tradeoffs I find to be 70/30 in favor of fall and winter. What I like most about the summer exploring is the ability to get into the water ways. Sometimes it's the only way to circumvent private property. I'm actually planning my first kayak trip down the Schuylkill river. There will be some incredible things to see!

@@kevinsalsbury2118 Morning Kevin. I live in the Hudson Valley just north of New York City. My RR I follow is the New York Ontario & Western, New York Central, the Ulster & Delaware and some of the semi extinct short lines in the hood. I have a bad habit of spotting old RR beds and their vegetated infested ROW and bridge abutments. The vestiges of 19th century equivalent of the interstate. The US version of the Apian Way and the Silk Road.

You and I share the same quality. I'm constantly looking for grades everywhere I drive. Even on roads I've traveled hundreds of times. Always looking for that one thing I missed. I spend a lot of time looking on Google maps, find a grade, then try to match it up maps on Wikipedia. It has been paying off. Problem is that there is so much to see that I never know which direction to go lol.

Tires are recycled now to use in asphalt. I don't know if there are collection places for them. The state DOT should have collection places at the DOT yards. They have one at Exit 44 of 476 and another one just south of Quakertown on 309. There are lots of DOT yards and they could easily have a truck or roll off container for collecting them. I still remember when they started using tires in asphalt in the late 90s. The sound changed on the highways and they were louder and had a deeper bass sound that traveled a lot further than the old concrete or old asphalt. But they say the new asphalt lasts longer and is easier on tires. So, the trade off is worth it.
@kevinsalsbury2118
@kevinsalsbury2118 21 день назад
Good evening Bill. That is great they are recycling tires for asphalt. I had no idea. I could spend the rest of my life collecting discarded tires and still not get them all. And that's just in our area. There are spots along the Lehigh Canal that have so many. It's really a bummer to see.

You have a total disrespect for private property. No Trespassing means No Trespassing. It doesn’t matter if it’s farm land or industrial, stay the hell out.
@kevinsalsbury2118
@kevinsalsbury2118 10 дней назад
More a curiosity than disrespect. There is a ton that I will never get to see because I respect the property. I weigh my options and then move forward. Don't spray paint or steal, just like history. If that means trespassing on some abandoned quarry property then so be it. By the way do you own this land?

OMG "total disrespect" ! Respect for other people's privacy. Respect for history, and the men who toiled to bring industrial development to this spot. Respect for common sense, it's "abandoned". No working equipment, no tools or other valuables. I'd say he has a whole lot of sense, and respect for another man's domain. And has a wonderful fascination with cool old stuff. Two thumbs up!

I have concerns with your disrespect for tresspassing. This land belongs to someone, even though it is listed as commercial property. My guess is had you requested permission to film on this land based on the fact that it was for historical documentation purposes you would have recieved permission to do so. Your approach could potentially cause you harm.
@kevinsalsbury2118
@kevinsalsbury2118 2 дня назад
@rogerpoorman7099 I am happy to agree with you on your comment. It's the term disrespect I don't agree with. Disrespect would have been me climbing on everything in sight, vandalism and so on. I walked through a parking lot to a stream. If this would have been active, or someones house or farm I would have left it be. Again I'm agreeing that I should have asked, however the chance was here so I took it. No disrespect intended towards you with this reply.
