Something is wrong with the new Friday The 13th 4K release from Paramount. I go over what I think happened and hope for a replacement.

I agree. The thing that hurts is that this could be a great release so easily. They just need to fix this issues, which I think is just a poor HDR pass, and it really could look great.

Paramount needs to fix this. I've already emailed them. Maybe there's a slim chance they'll include the mono track if mentioned.

Man, so freaking disappointing. I double dipped on this one (I have the Scream Factory box set) and did so because I saw the potential. I have a tough time figuring out how something like this gets past quality control. Why must these get to the masses and cause so much negative attention to (hopefully) get something done?

It is really disappointing. As far as quality control goes, and I need to do a video on this, I believe a lot of the time no one even watches it but is only run through a program looking for technical errors but not picture or sound errors.

I don't get it. It looks great on my LG CX OLED. I have the SF blu ray box set as well and although they look good, the colors are overdone an unatural at times. On this 4k release the colors look natural an the detail is excellent. I guess the ONLY complaint I have is, why in the world would they change the fade from white to black?? On these high profile releases, studios need to start getting the directors and cinematographers involved in these transfers since there's so many unhappy people. Like that's gonna happen!!

Meh, i think im good with the SF release as a balancing out. Less detail doesn't meant that the BD has no detail, and the og mono is a big draw for me.

One thing people should know is that not every older film in 4K is going to be worth getting. That not all these Studios are going back to the Negatives, and giving us a proper transfer, getting the quality as close to true 4K as they can. That it seems like some studios just throw a transfer onto a 4K disc, and people will just buy it, thinking it's going to look AMAZING, when this isn't always the case.

I was so disappointed when I watched this last night: absolutely floored over the blown out highlights. This is two screwups in a row for Paramount, Event Horizon being the first. What’s the best way to contact Paramount for a replacement program? I’m sure we’ll have to complain before they consider it.

I hadn't opened mine and I had heard lots of bad things about it. I checked the 4K digital and it was pretty much the same as you described. I could even see in the Paramount logo how blown up it was in the whites. The night scenes were WAY too dark. I will stick with my Scream Factory copy and returning this 4K disc, Paramount needs to fix the issue.

Thanks for the honest opinion hopefully Paramount watches this video. This movie is a slasher classic and deserves top notch treat especially because Paramount damn well knows that people are fanatics for Friday the 13th.

I received my copy but haven't seen it yet. It was also discussed on bluray forums a week before release that the 4K transfer had problems so people started canceling their orders. I say wait a few years until Scream Factory releases the first four films in 4K and will do it properly.

Thank You! You're the first reviewer to mention this, that I have found. I noticed terrible black crush on this release throughout the entire movie. To the point where you could barely tell what was going on in the night scenes. I popped in my old Paramount Blu Ray & Scream Factory Blu Ray and they both looked way better than this release. I'm sure Scream is gonna do their own 4k eventually and these issues will get resolved.

Well, thank you! BTW, is Friday The 13th one of those movies you were talking about a while back that were intended to be cropped at the top and bottom, which in the case of Friday The 13th in the Scream Factory set renders it 1.85:1?

That's right! Compared to it's full screen option it is supposed to be cropped to 1.85:1. That extra space is technically not supposed to be seen which is why on old full screen VHS of films that should be cropped you could sometimes see see a boom mic or a light or something at the top of the frame. lol

Does this worry anybody about the upcoming Halloween 6-8 4K box from Shout? Paramount has the rights to them now, and I assume did the 4K scans & restoration for them. 🙁

They also did the restoration and work for Addams family, pet semetary & Star Trek the motion picture which are all fantastic transfers. Every studio has bad apples but if I’m not mistaken Disney owns Halloween 6-8, paramount is only the distributor currently. Scream also seems to have a separate team that does those 4ks since the quality was vastly superior to their other 4ks. companies like scream don’t do the transfer work but just touch up what they get from the studios.

Just finished it. I thought it was fine, I think a lot of 4K’s with Dolby Vision tend to be a little dark. Maybe Scream Factory will get to release it in 4K, the way they did Halloween despite there already being a previous 4K release.

Have a gut feeling Paramount may announce Part 2 for December 13th this year. Falls on a Tues as well. But they have to fix Part 1 for me to get excited.

Just watched it for my birthday and yeah besides it being dark and the opening scene to fade out white never happened, at the ending right after the decapitation the sound effect happened 2 times! I definitely noticed that was not right and sounded awful!

I actually waited on this for a change. I figure there will be an inevitable box set at some point. And as much as I love 4k, the quality control is the worst I’ve ever seen for a home video format. Better to wait for the reviews instead of pre-ordering with 4k these days. Disappointing.

There might be a box set down the line for 1-4. I haven't heard anything about 5-8 getting 4K scans. I was shocked they didn't for the Shout box.

Has anyone else experienced the picture on the F13 4k going totally black? On mine, in the first few seconds of the movie when the moon is going out of frame, the screen goes completely black for about a second. Seems very odd…..

Maybe I just don’t know enough about movies (most likely the case) but I just don’t understand why film grain is a thing, and more so why it can’t be removed in editing. It looks like there’s tv static covering your entire screen. I know in current video games you can turn grain OFF because it’s the same situation just static / noise. When it’s turned off, you’re left with a nice clear picture. Just don’t understand why that’s not the case with movies. Because when you upscale to 4K, you’re not just bringing out extra detail, you’re basically enhancing all the grain. Maybe someone could fill me in on why it’s not possible to remove it but I’m sure glad I got the box set and skipped out on these upcoming 4K releases.

The problem if the studio goes overboard with dynamic noise reduction in order to remove grain, then fine details will get lost and faces can have an unnatural plastic look. I'd rather see film grain than loose any fine details.

I skipped the shout set and still have the black tin set. I bought this 4K and haven’t watched it yet but I wasn’t impressed with the lack of Atmos. It should be included on every 4K Blu-Ray, if we can get it on older films like Halloween then there is no excuse for Paramount not to include it here.

From your review I’m glad I passed on this. I have the SF box set and am super happy with it. Quick question. Have you experienced flickering on older Blu-rays? I’ve noticed that a lot on 80s horror films. It’s like a pulsating image thing. It’s driving me nuts. I have an OLED CX and Panasonic UB820 player. Don’t know if my player is causing this. Thanks

@@prayerposition1 Well I would’ve said the HDMI cable might be the problem, but I guess not if it’s only with some blu rays…. I guess you could do a factory reset on your player and see if that fixes it? You might want to ask an online forum with people more knowledgeable on the issue. Best of luck!

I was also very disappointed by this release. I thought something was wrong with my player! This was a horrible transfer but I guess you get what you pay for. It was only $19.99 so Paramount probably just wanted to slap a 4K on it just to say they were the first to put it out.

Thanks for this. The VUDU 4K Dolby Vision is horrible. Way too dark. The 4K disc is brighter, and I do see some more details/etc, but I was expecting a lot more.

Thanks for posting this, I was tempted to buy F13 again for roughly the 6th time… definitely skipping now. Btw - my only gripe on the Shout set is that all the transfers are a bit on the bright side. Wonder if this is related to the original 4k scans, as well as a crummy hdr pass.

Hm, weird. I watched it last night and saw none of these problems. Obviously it's across the board so the problem is with me, but I thought it was stunning and had so little grain I almost wondered if there was a ton of DNR, except that it didn't look phony to me. Of course, I do need cataract surgery.

Every 4K uses DNR to lower the grain. Apparently the scanning process due to it being digital makes the grain look more so they need a slight pass to make it more pleasing to the eye. Same as old laserdisc players that have built in V-dnr to make the movies look better. Some do go above like the lord of the rings and take away too much but others like the shining look better than they did theatrically

I wasn't happy that they released this so soon after the box set instead of just including the 4K in the box set but now I don't feel so bad, this doesn't sound like it's worth a buy. I'll gladly just stick with the Blu-Ray box set. It seems like the other companies releasing catalog titles care more about the movies than the companies who own these movies, the movie companies probably just see this as a way to make money more than caring about the customer's satisfaction.

HDR strikes again. I think it’s a number of factors, from inexperienced colorists, to buggy software, to “hdr” TVs that can’t truly display it (including mine)… but it feels like it’ll be 10 more years before they get HDR right. And that will be when we are buying the remastered versions, lol.

I agree this 4K has a lot of issues, but those two daytime scenes you mentioned were actually the least of this transfer’s problems. In fact, I thought the scene on the dock was the best-looking part. Where the issues come up are mainly in the night scenes (which is most of the film) because it’s just so dark and the black is so crushed that I found it almost headache-inducing. Granted, 4K is generally on the dark side but not THIS dark. And the grain looks weird even in many of the day scenes because they appear to have overused DNR which gives it a very blotchy appearance. You also neglected to mention the removal of the fade to white before the opening credits.

The 4K version of this movie is so dark in the night scenes. Hard to watch. Skip this and the Scream Factory blu ray.

people want this one for the collection but for me , i have 6 copies of Friday the 13th and i honestly do not believe they can get a better looking scan then the the scream factory 4k scan in the set , its a 9.5 put of 10. infact it looks like the movie was filmed today when you watc h that paticular 4k scan . 1-4 in the set looks good but the first one looks great,

Jeez, that looks like s#it! It seems to be a growing trend that big studios fuk up these 4k releases with bad HDR or DNR. It's one more reason to pay little bit more and buy something from boutique labels like second sight or vinegar syndrome...

Honestly, HOW do you mess this up? Absolutely INEXCUSABLE, on virtually every level. Yeah, we have smaller budgets, we are pressed for time, blah, blah, blah. Here is my reply: if Blue Underground can absolutely DESTROY previous versions, with 4K, Paramount has NO EXCUSE. I say BU, but there are at least a DOZEN other boutique labels doing AMAZING restorative work. Just STOP. License this out to a label who has genuine LOVE for these films, and WILL deliver a top-notch, quality product. You are creating your own problems, giving yourself your own headaches. Fans DESERVE BETTER.

Just my opinion, but part of the charm and experience watching the film is it NOT being 4K. I had no desire to get a resolution beyond what the box set Blu has.
