NEW VS SCUFFED GOLF BALL TEST!
** I CAN'T BELIEVE A SCUFFED GOLF BALL CAN LOSE 32.5 YARDS**
I've got to test this...
MY GOLF SPY wrote an article saying that a scuffed TITLEIST PRO V1 golf ball lost 32.5 yards against a new TITLEIST PRO V1 golf ball.

Surely the wind resistance would be the variable which would affect the distance on scuffed balls? (A rougher surface would struggle to travel as far through the air). This wouldn't appear in a sim test. I'd be interested in seeing an outdoor test with them to check this, as I can't see a SIM measuring this 👍

I think so too. Also I believe testing Golfballs with different dimple patterns or weight doesn’t make any sense on a sim as it just doesn’t know and only tracks speed and spin.

I always assumed you were stupid, this confirms it. The scuffed ball is adversely affected by the wind resistance. Best of luck with your RU-vid journey, hope it goes well for you, but I won’t be along for the ride as this stupidity is the final straw for me.

In the winter I use anything.... not really fussed coz its poor conditions but in the summer and in comps I use the kirkland. It plays well enough for my standard of golf. A pro V1 isn't gonna stop a massive high handicappers slice, just hurts more losing a 5 quid ball vs a £1 ball

Hopefully your test is correct 👍🏻 maybe the aerodynamics played a part on their test which obviously in a sim it’s not affected with it only travelling a few metres. Would be interested in an outdoor test once the rain stops 😂

my thoughts exactly, off the face theyre going to be very similar but travelling 250 yards through the air is a different matter.

@@cwugrad396 You didn't read the report. The report actually says the data based off the machine was close in numbers, HOWEVER they saw the ball flights live and measured them and the shots were much different. So yes the original post is valid. Indoor testing will not result in any difference.

Hey Gary. Like the idea of video. You will only see these kind of results when using trackman outside. The scuffs will affect aerodynamic s i.e increased drag and poorer aerodynamics. Be intersed to see my golf spy show video results of such tests

I play "found golf balls" and haven't found a difference between old and new. I do find some differences between brands and models but that's down to differences in spin. I've been skeptical of the robot testing and glad to see your results match my experiences.

I've been using the RZN tour, 3 piece ball for about 12 months. £22 for 12, urethane cover. Good on the greens and the right compression for the average golf swing and I'm a very average golfer. I've tested these against Kirkland, chrome soft, Tp5 and pro v1 and I get more distance with the RZN and they are equal to the other balls on the green.

Being a high 17 handicapper I can't justify spending a fortune on high speck balls, I use inesis distance ball's at 7.99 a dozen (yellow) great for winter. May go to srixon when the summer months come. Enjoy your channel, and Mr Robinson's channel, thank you for the tips and entertainment, trying to get my driver over 200 yards to bring my handicap down, senior golfer but think I can achieve this before the new season.🤔

Hi Gaz In the winter, I play with whatever balls I have to hand, I'm currently using a Vice Pro, which I found. I have to say it's a decent ball. In the season, I use a Pro V1. In my opinion they are the best balls all round. Plus, they seem to be very durable, so unless I lose it, I can easily play 6 rounds or more with the same ball. I've usually lost it by then though😂

I'm not a physicist, but I'm fairly certain the yardage difference would be lost on the air rather than off the club face, meaning that, because the launch monitor only monitors launch, the aerodynamics haven't had a chance to play its part of slowing the scuffed balls down, therefore reducing distance in an indoor environment
@chrissellings
@chrissellings 7 месяцев назад
Yes Gaz you are being tight 😂 Get yourself some Vice Pro Plus in lime green fella ❤️ I play them now because they do something that no other ball can do and that's play like a ProV1x but easier to compress. They aren't so low spinning they fall out the air on the long clubs they have got really good greenside spin and feel great off the putter. I the lime green they stick out a mile which means they lower my anxiety if I'm walking towards an errant shot and I can see it immediately and that is a huge plus.

I've never found a noticeable difference between a scuffed ball and brand new. I play used ProV1s. I buy 5 dozen once a year on Black Friday when they're discounted the most. I buy the previous model in 5A mint. They are all brand new or hit once or twice and usually have a random logo. The price is about half of a brand new ProV1.
@samprince1653
@samprince1653 7 месяцев назад
An earlier comment about aerodynamics is a valid point your test can't replicate on a launch monitor. The scuffs create flaws in the ball that in the total flight cause friction and resistence in the air. The launch monitor will not allow for this hence no comparable difference. That said, 30+ loss in yardage from a drive seems excessive and must be a badly scuffed ball. The main issue to be impacted is likely to be flight path (fade/draw) as, like a mud ball, you'll have a imbalance in ball weight uniformity. Interesting test though.
@garymartingolf
@garymartingolf 7 месяцев назад
I agree, these things always make more sense after reading the comments section. I’ll definitely re-do this test outside with a prov1 and a trackman to see if they’re right. I can’t see it being 30 years either, but we’ll see 👌🏼

In my mind it's a bit like cricketers shining up one side of the ball and letting the other rough up to create swing. Depending on where the scuff is it's bound to change the flight of the ball through the air.

I use the Callaway superfast, it's $24.99 for 15, not 12 and it reacts great off the putter, spins plenty with the wedges around the green, and has great distance. My buddy I golf with a lot loves his pro v 1's and would not try anything else but one day I hit a chip shot up a damn near cliff side and stopped it dead where it landed and he decided to try the same shot with the extra ball I jad in my pocket. And as soon as he hit it, before it even hit the green he was like wow that ball feels awesome. Two rounds later, guess what ball he was pulling outta his bag

You asked what balls we play. I use the AD333 and sometimes Soft Feel, Srixon for both. Why 2 slightly different balls, short answer is during winter in Cape Town the AD333 start to feel very hard so I switch to the Soft feels. Carry distances are about the same for scraggy balls compared to new. I also tend to buy "pond balls" a good majority of which are "only hit once". LOL, but i find that the longer I play with a ball they start to feel softer and less controllable with short irons. So I'll usually put a ball that's seen 5 or 6 rounds in the scrag bag. Then I donate the bag when full to the beginner kids section at the club. PS I pay ZAR200 - 400 (Pounds 8.50 - 17.00) for a bag of 10 pond balls and once per year I splurge on 2 X 12 packs of AD333 new plus 1X 12 pack of Soft feels that I normally get hit for ZAR1200 (Sterling 51.00)

Your travelling down an interesting route looking into balls. It stand sense a used ball has more elastic memory ( been taken to its elelastic limit then returned). A new ball needs 60-70 shots to get really brike in. I have 250 3 piece, 300 2 piece balls all found. Only thing i check is Espon Slats to check the core position. Personally I use Pinnacle Soft balls Gary and have been for many years. Might not be your cup of tea as a pro but for me at 16 h'cap you can't beat 'em. They're made by Acushnet, from the same stable as your ProV's, buttery soft off the putter and around the green and long off the face. Best part is they're under £20 for 15 (yes, 15 not a dozen!). Try one out. If you don't like it, at that price, you can chuck it away!!!

I have found that a scuff on a premium ball has way more effect on performance than a scuff on a lower tier ball. It could be the thinner cover material or what the cover is made of but that is what I have found from my experience.

i totally 100% concur. I've got about a 100 mph driver swing speed, and a brand new slick Pro V1 is light years different than one that's been played for 12-18 holes for me. It mostly shows up on driver and mid-irons. I'm beginning to wonder about this site's testing; they tested a balata ball from 1974 and supposedly found that it went just about as far as today's top Pro V1, which doesn't seem possible. I hit old balata balls on the range regularly (you know how range balls are), and they are WAY shorter than today's stuff.

You’re never going to see the difference using a launch monitor inside. The scuff marks effect the dimple pattern, which effects the balls flight. Launch monitors use equations calculated with in the first few meters of the ball flight. A proper comparison would have to be done outside head to head on the course.

The problem with this test is that the Quad just measures launch conditions which the scuff does not affect. The scuff would change the aerodynamics of a ball and possibly it's flight. Using Trackman outside would give you more accurate information in this case.

Play with lake balls or what I’ve found on the round 😂 if it’s new it’s callaway supersoft or ad333 , use until a split appears if I’m that lucky - generally loose them way prior to this. Has to be said though I have noticed some level of drop off with an extremely scuffed ball , if held onto a chrome soft for a good while 3/4 rounds after it had been badly munched into a limestone wall and had to pie it off when it was notably going 20 yards less on drives / wood shots and hybrid shots - felt like with irons it wasn’t a huge loss but definitely path wasn’t as predictable

I'm tight as well... I only play Inesis balls (I buy them new but then use them until they're really really scuffed and/or I loose them). The 900 tour when it's summer and greens are hard and I want maximum spin/control, and the distance 100 (probably one of the cheapest balls on the market, less than 10 quids a box). I'm not convinced with the "tests" that tell you this or that regarding distance on balls as my shots end up in pretty much the same place regardless of the ball I play, and spin is indeed rather different around the green but you adjust in 5 to 10 minutes max. I was already shocked by MGS testing as they said the Inesis tour 900 was the shortest "tour ball" loosing 30 yards compared to a proV1x left dash... In my experience there might be 2 yards between them. So scuffed v. new, pretty much the same: with my game I don't see perceivable differences that warrant buying very expensive balls.

Think if you check the video Gary, the strike was very off the toe, with some of the better shots with the 7 iron being with the scuffed ball, distance and efficiency looked better. The elements play a huge part with the scuffed ball, but with the simulator shots not being affected the same. My golfspy used a ROBOT, but also balls are hit onto grass, at a range. Did you put dots of the club and ball to make it more accurate, Gary. Water and mud, make huge differences, too, I checked the data when it first came out. As you said, the pro V cover is softer, so the scuffs damage the dimple pattern more, which is what affects the spin and flight, as you know. Older better quality 3 piece balls also lose compression more, based of what I have experienced, when a ball lasts a number of rounds. Hence, why driving ranges, that use older pre used golf balls, often fly up to 20+% less in distance.

My Golf Spy is busted! The Srixon Q Star (available in the states) and the AD 333 (UK) are the same ball. I play Vice Pro, Wilson Staff, Wilson Triad, Wilson Zip, Callaway Superfast. I try others as well for fun. Still looking for the one that gives me everything I need. Vice Pro jumps off the club so does the Callaway two piece. Thanks

Not sure how true that is, also buying balls that been hit before are graded on how hit they have been, I buy top grade pro v1s generally £1 per ball for summer and winter yellow chromosoft also £1 per ball Nothing is more annoying losing a brand new Pro v1

Spoken like a true fellow " tight arsed" Yorkshire man Gary lol...... the AD 333 is my ball of choice and I do buy them new but at around £25 a dozen I think they present very good value and they do actually last quite a long time...well if you miss the water....oh and the forest on the right...then that stupid motorway someone put there,but you know what I'm getting at lol 🌟🎊🤩🥳

I'm glad you said that because I thought it was just me I've got 6 dozen Tp5 balls in my hallway which I don't use because they felt a bit clicky and hard and I didn't know what had gone wrong because when I tried them I was convinced they were the best ball I'd ever hit. I tried them during a very hot spell last June and for the rest of the summer it was 10 degrees cooler

Gary, the concern here, that the test was a pro v1, and not an AD 333. Balls are different, the seizing cuts up on my wedges, were as the pro v1 lasted longer.

I would say that I use scuffed balls and don’t see a huge difference from sparkly new ones! If you are hitting them great n straight then new all the time. But it’s easier to lose a freebie than a newbie. Happy new year Gaz.

Normally Srixon Soft Feel or AD333 , I’m just about to try the Taylormade Distance +. I normally spend around £20 for 12 balls. Not at that level yet to justify buying 12 balls for £40-50.

Strike is so important with these type of tests. That scuffed ball will rip your screen quicker than a new one. With all the money we spend on golf, going with scuffed and water balls seems like a poor place to save cost. I feel better with playing Premium balls that I purchased on sale

I have seen quite a few short videos showing the affects of balls with scuffs , grass stains etc when putting and with what I’ve seen it effects the true roll quite significantly. As the saying goes , driving for show , putting for dough. Maybe you could do a test on that ! Good video nevertheless. 👍

OK, after a little research, i can see why you didn't see much difference --- the Srixon ad333 has an ionomer cover, not a urethane cover. Meaning it's tougher, but won't spin as much. And as such, you won't see any pros hitting the AD333. You're going to need to find a pro ball (like the Titleist Pro V's, or maybe Callaway Chrome or somesuch) that has a urethane cover to properly do the test. And i'd recommend not getting a new ball and purposely scuffing it; get a new ball that's seen 12-18 holes of play. That's different than just banging it sideways off the cart path once or twice because 10-12 holes of regular play will dramatically degrade the slick newly painted cover. And it's that slickness, at least from what i can tell, that gives you the distance due to having less friction through the air.

Been playing five years now, never bought new balls off the shelf and play 2-3 rounds /wk. At first, I did believe I needed new balls as a beginner. Now that my game has "improved" somewhat, I am beginning to wonder if 🤔 The balls I find in the woods, generally, appear new. But, occasionally, some are scuffed from cart path/rock contact. I would be curious how these types scuffs affect performance as yours seemed to be just lightly scuffed.

In a ball that looks brand new, or just slightly stained or scuffed, there is no difference. And you can save 30-50% easily. But as game improves you lose less and less, therefore have the need for less balls.
