We have completed the driveway back to the old barn. We laid down road grade Typar and covered that with 2" rock. We then drove on it for a few weeks to make sure it was good and packed down. Then we topped it off with road pack gravel to finish.

Typar from what you say is clay underside makes more sense to use instead of regular geotextile with better permeability, the Typar with give your gravel drive a better seat and not sink into the clay as easily. At least you got the property for for the excess water to spread over so its not sitting in the gravel as much. If you ever have any what you see being serious issues may I suggest you check out EcoTerr StabiliGrid, its a solid platic grid system and adds extra support (hold up more vehicle weight) and lateral stability (keeps stones in their place much longer) than just the textile alone since right now pieces can still get kicked around from the tires and the vehicles torque as it passes over. I have lived in places and dealt with rutting and scattering issues pertaining to gravel, just passing along some tips. Oh and if you got issues with the edges/sides you could dig a trench and infill, this would give it a foundation like that of what a building its on. and creates a trough for water run-off. Most use 12 foot wide, nice work going with 15.

You built the drive way the correct way by putting down the non-woven geotextile fabric. Good job!! Your driveway will last a long time. I see SO many people just through down gravel on the dirt. That's a big NO NO in my book. Does it work yes, will it last no. They will be constantly having to add more gravel and fixing potholes. People don't realize that cloth is not just a weed barrier it actually is meant as a ground stabilizer and by prevent the gravel from being pushed in the ground over a period of years driving on it and good permeability. This is exactly how they build roads. Nicely done! I am getting ready to do mine as well soon and have my fabric already purchased.

Gravel or 21-A cost between $17 -20 per ton plus delivery around here, northern Virginia. When I built my road I removed 12" top soil/clay 10 ft wide, put down 15 ft wide fabric and then rift raft, witch is stone from 1"to 3" big 8" thick then 4"- of 21-A (stone dust and 57 gravel mix.) I do believe in shallow ditches on the sides and crowning the road. The road was 600ft long and I used 1000 tons of material, do it right or don't do it at all.

How much does each of those types of rock cost per truckload (or is it a different with how to calculate cost)? In a few years when we move to the country we're going to need a couple gravel roads. Also, would it be cheaper if they just dump the two types of gravel and I spread it myself? Lastly, how much is that Typar you used?
@1982MCI
@1982MCI 6 лет назад
JCE3000GT I don’t know what a truckload costs in his area but you do not want them to just dump it and spread it yourself, you don’t understand how much work it is too move and spread an entire load of gravel , even if you have a tractor you can not do near as good a job as the truck driver can spread it and it’s done in 10 min and it’s the same price whether they dump it or spread it unless the driver is dishonest and sees you don’t know what your doing and then he may run the price up but I have never had that happen. Depending upon cost in your area at your local quarry but you are probly looking at $400-$500 per truckload. Good luck

you need road geotextile fabric. part of its function is to act as a tension membrane and spread the load. black plastic will be punctured nearly immediately and will neither keep the rock form sinking into the soils, nor act as a load-spreading membrane.

How has the driveway stood up after a year. I live in a small community that has gravel roads and some serious slopes. Currently we are having problems with erosion on the steep slopes during heavy rains which are relatively frequent. Have learned some things since putting in the two sections of driveway that you would be willing to share? Thanks.
@CountryViewAcres
@CountryViewAcres 5 лет назад
My driveway has held up good. But I don't have steep slopes to deal with. I have a few areas that the gravel was laid on a little thin, and I need to add more. When I made the driveway, I put on about equal amounts of over sized rock as I did the road pack gravel that went over it. But I feel like I should have added more road pack, cause some over sized rock ended up on top when I leveled the rock with the tractor. So if I had more money I would have added more road pack on top. Also I have a section that I really need to dig a ditch along, cause water washes on the side of the driveway.
