Deakin University Chair of Global Islamic Politics Greg Barton discusses how the conflict in Gaza may be affected after Hamas names new leader Yahya Sinwar, following the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh.
"He is still safe in his underground bunker in Gaza as far as we know," Mr Barton told Sky News Australia.
"This is bad news because we don't expect he has much of an appetite for hostage negotiations.
"He is very much committed to this idea of martyrdom.
"He's happy to drag the people of Gaza down into the grave if it somehow advances the political cause as he understands it."
