I like your move de-tuning a lug and then going back up. Never did that before but I'm going to try it today before rehearsal. Cool stuff!

Wow Steve - sounds GREAT! I have an 8x10, 8x12, 11x14 and 16x16 with a 16x22 Kick - I purchased them used from SIR in NYC, the finish was pretty beat up (as to be expected) with all shells made in Japan in the early 80's - Hot Red finish. I took them to Chris Heuer's drum lab and had him cut the edges - HOLLY smokes, they sound amazing!!!!! The resonance that he brought back into the drums were simply magical. I love how you play and the sound you get/tone you get off your drums is largely due to how you hit them..well done...love seeing you hit !!

Really really enjoyable, felt like I was spending precious time with a like minded friend who happens to be a very good drummer. Thanks man, I needed that. Can't believe I listened because usually if the guys not playing enough I switch it, so glad I listened. Andy.

i have 8, 10, 12, 13 & 15 of these Recording customs and also always struggled with tuning the 12" tom. Funny that you said the same :)

Love your vids. Steve. I was glad to hear you talk about the finicky 12” tom. Not glad it’s a headache for you but that it apparently is ‘a thing’. A friend of mine and I have speculated for years now that there’s something strange about a 12. I have 2 early 00’s MCA, one standard toms and one “fusion” sizes (12x9), and one recording custom with the deeper 80s sized toms. Every one of them, the 12 can be a challenge more often than not. And yes, the room makes a huge difference. 10s, 14s, and 16s are all quick and effortless to dial up and in but pretty much every 12 is a battle. I wonder that’s all about? …the great 12 tom conspiracy… Anyway, great stuff always!! Thanks!

Hi Steve , I just stumbled across your channel today as I was checking out some other drum tuning videos. Those recording customs sound awesome, but I was blown away by your drumming. I could hear shades of Vinnie and Steve Gadd. I spent a good part of last night checking out your other vids and your performances with Altered.....you are killing it! You are truly a hidden gem here on youtube!

So did you keep the original remo ambassador resos? Are they original reso heads? Cause if so that has a great sound. Ive always ran pins on my r.c. may have just changed my mind.

I don’t changed the reso that often but didn’t touch them this time.

60 yrs old., love the video also Steve cause that's how I finally learned to kinda feel the tune. Also, could you, when you have time, do a video showing examples of fills that use double bass? Thank You.

I like Evans G1, they sound much more smooth. Great video, thank you. Tuned my RC kid two days ago - toke 3.5h for 6 toms 😁

Thankyou Steve. I’ve always struggled tuning my 12 RC too. I use a regular size 12 and a power sized 12 which I picked up cheap on eBay as it had some ‘snare rash’. So I have 10 12 12pwr & 14 which I also like low and fat like yourself. I think I get a little more bottom end from emperors than regular ambassadors but Virgil seems to do ok with the ambassadors! Superb wisdom and sharing of your knowledge man.

Hello Steve. I've watched a couple of your videos and I think you're a great drummer. I have one of the new RC kit, and I recently put clear Evans G1's on my toms, and I've never tried your tuning approach by cranking the heads way up like that. So after putting on my heads, I instantly got dents. Now I'm particular about height, angels etc, but even so... So shooting from my hip, I tried to crank the head om the 10" it actually helped to straightened out the dents to some degree, and the drum sounded instantly better. Does this apply to coated and/or double ply heads ? second question : Have you thought of putting the 8" and 10" up "Weckl style", and than move the 12" a bit closer and move the ride accordingly ?

Try an ambassador, It won't dent, Evans g 1 Dent easily compared to a remo clear or coated ambassador.🥁

Looks and sounds great Steve. I play a very similar set up. I was going to add a picture so you can see where I have my ride but I dont think there is a way to add an attachment. However, my ride is to the outside of my far right rack tom and over the floor tom. Maybe you can try that and see how it works for you. Rich

Do today's modern isolation systems for rack and floor toms really make a big difference in terms of sustain? I had an old beginner kt in the late '80s and remember tuning both my rack and floor toms off the rack and floor. I would hold them by their hoops and they would have days of sustain. But then back on the rack and floor, their sustain was dead and "thuddy," even on a rug or carpet.

I have a Tama Art Star with 10,12,13 and the 13 acts just like your 12. It never wants to tune and just when I think its in a good place it has that identical mystery buzz. I have a suspicion its in inside below the lug nut. Like maybe the dampening material in the lug spring has shifted or deteriorated. I haven't explored it to find out for sure.
