You should always check you tyres pressures when the tyres are cold as pressures always go up when they get warm. So your tyres will be a little low. Lesson over.

The dealer that I purchased my ‘21 DCT Tour has a service plan that offers 36 months of unlimited scheduled maintenance for $1500. This plan includes pickup and delivery of the bike by trailer. So far I have two services and have 8k miles so far. Hopefully next season I will put more miles on it. BTW, I have the same boots and have been very pleased with them. Good choice!

Thank you for posting. The price of servicing sounded very reasonable to me. Service charges seem to be considerably more expensive in my neck of the woods. I have owned the Daytona boots since 2017 (short pair for summer, taller pair for winter/long trips). Daytona is not well known in the USA. Like you said, their quality is top notch. Mine are still in great shape. Plus, if something goes wrong, they will be more than happy to fix them (for a fee of course).

Check tyre pressure when cold. Only time its consistant. Pressures go down in winter. Btw £216 pretty good. Independent wont be 1/2 that! Remember also almost £40 is vat. Dealers got to make profit or when you want them guess what. They wont be there.

Interesting insight into the running costs of a 1800 Wing, your service cost seemed very reasonable to me, noted that your anti scratch buttons have disappeared off the tank side panels on your wing, I was surprised you fitted them, I thought you would have gone down the protective film route like you did on your Panigale.

For a very complex machine, I find the Goldwing fairly simple to maintain. I do most of the routine maintenance myself and it is easier to work on than many other bikes I have owned. All is simple except changing the air filter, which takes me about four hours to change. The dealer can do it in three hours but he charges $125 US per hour for labor, so that service is about $400 US +. Really unacceptable for an engineering company like Honda, there has to be a better way to design this.
@twig3288

I can change the air filter on my Volvo in less than a minute. Six spring clips lift the lid then out with the old and in with the new, refasten the clips, all done.

Hi Frank; I changed the air filter on my 2013 F6B. Quite labour intensive, but I’m glad I did it. I learned a lot. Took me about 6 hours, but I saved myself about $400. I will do it on my 2021 when the time comes, although I’m not looking forward to it. I’m pretty sure I will take more care removing and replacing all the bits that need to come apart to get to the filter than the average mechanic would. There’s so much that could go unnoticed if broken, once it’s all back together.

My first service at 4000 miles was $550. It’s a money grab by the dealer as they didn’t even adjust the parking brake. Also, the tire pressure warning is a pretty common problem with this bike when cold.

I must admit just over £200 for a service on a Goldwing is nothing to stress over, it seems very reasonable indeed. I remember when I first got my BMW K1600 people were constantly telling me it would cost me a fortune in running and service costs but they couldn't have been further from the truth. Just because its a large expensive bike does not necessarily mean the running costs are going to be astronomical.

Re. tyre pressure monitoring system. I believe Beemers run an algorithm that compensates for the increase as tyres warm, though haven't had this confirmed. Even if so, it ain't perfect as the pressures do change a little as the tyres warm. I would imagine a Goldwing would have this capability built-in if it does exist.

Good, real world and relevant info. Running costs are so important in the ownership experience, and often missed ir given scant attention. £216 fir oil and filters? Plus the diagnostic I suppose. I don't know what you need to remove to do the work, but if doesn't sound cheap. But worth it to keep the warranty. Lovely kit, but nearly 600 sheets for just boots and gloves? That is expensive. I really believe you can buy similar quality for a bit less. Happy travels 👍

@@TheMissendenFlyer Agree. But, money talks. Have a look around at the next bike meet or cafe you go to and see how many pairs of 400 pound boots you see, or 2000 pound suits for that matter. Perhaps I'm just tight, and I do know brands are important to some folk. Otherwise Chinese bikes would sell better. Perhaps like all things it's about balance. As a one bike owner the money I save in one area allows expenditure in others. That is, trips away. Interesting, to each their own. Keep it up excellent viewing.

UK update on the fuel pump issue. I spoke to the Honda dealer today who is repairing my 2020 registered Goldwing. He informed me that my bike is a 2019 bike and the UK fuel pump recall (announced this week, late April 2024) does NOT cover my bike. The UK recall is for 2020-2024 Goldwings and NOT 2018-2019. I find this strange as the USA recall covers 2018-2024. My dealer also mentioned that the part number of the faulty fuel pump on my bike is also NOT one of the part numbers listed in the recall. This would suggest that there are fuel pumps fitted to 2018/2019 bikes that are not covered under the UK recall, but are also prone to failure as mine has done. Might I suggest this is slightly concerning? “Luckily”, my bike is under the Honda extended warranty, so the fuel pump replacement is covered and should be back on the road next week when a new pump arrives from Belgium, apparently. Hope this helps someone else in the meantime AND prompts a few questions for Honda UK to answer?

@@TheMissendenFlyer Indeed. However, I have just been informed that the USA recall consists of 2 bulletins. One recall bulletin covers the 2018-2019 bikes and the other bulletin covers the 2020-2024 bikes. Perhaps Honda UK are going to do the same, but have yet to issue the 2018-2019 bulletin? The USA recalls were issued in February 2024, why the delay in the UK? Safety is safety regardless of which side of the “pond” you ride. Just as well they are not in charge of NOTAMS? 🤦🏻‍♂️

Interesting that they gave you a bit of a dud for a courtesy bike. Shame if they gave you a new little bike you hadn't riden before you could have done a mini test review on it. At least it was better than my experience with Fowler's in Bristol last year when I took my SX in for a service. It was in the petrol shortage madness. I live 50 miles away but work a couple of miles away. So was dropping the bike off and getting a courtesy bike to go to work. When I got there the service guy hadn't booked me a bike.Then after a wait came back to me saying he had one I could have but its £25 because I lived over 25miles away I think it was. I said I just want a bike to go 2 miles up the road and back. In the end he dropped the £25 charge but was insisting I got fuel at a time when any garages with fuel had massive queues. I told him to forget it I would walk. Which I did and was late for work and got soaked doing so. Not impressed at all. I think that is a fair price for a main dealer service, especially if you got a loaner as well to help make your day productive. Also 4 k miles in a year with all your other bikes as well as your other long term test bikes is a respectable mileage, good on you . One final thing if I could be so bold, maybe a good future RU-vid project for you ( if you are not already IAM trained) would be to sign up for an IAM course and document the training and your thoughts…. The slow speed riding and anticipation plus the pre ride checks ( low tyre pressures?) are all part of the training. I’ve just done mine and enjoyed it immensely and even after 43 years of continuous bike ownership I learned much and my riding is improved. Hope that suggestion doesn’t offend. Take care Nev

Hi Andy, you mention that this was its first service. Thats strange. In Holland the dealer told me to come for service after the first 1.000 kilometers (about 625 miles). The initial oil in the GW is specially for that period. During that distance the oil becomes dirty because of the internal small dirt coming from a new engine. After 1.000 kilometers all that "dirt (i do not know the englisch word for it, i am Dutch) they put new oil in and you notice at once like you just did. So i don not understand that you went back 4.000 miles. Driving that long with initial oil is not good my dealer told me. You should ask your dealer about this.

I’m finding my GW DCT quite economical to own. The oil changes are more expensive due to needing two filters, but a minor detail. I’m averaging about 60 miles per imperial gallon on the highway. I believe our gallon is the same as yours… about 4.5 litres. That’s quite a bit better than my 2013 F6B. I was quite surprised and pleased. And it sounds like there have been very few major mechanical issues with this new iteration since it was introduced in 2018. Proving to be very reliable.

Hey, when the DCT starts to shift rougher as it breaks in, or is a little rough on the start, it's likely due to clutch plate wear. You can heat up the engine to operating temp and then run the clutch initialization process to recalibrate. You'll notice a big improvement in shifts after that. Cheers!

Andy, amazed you have only just discovered Daytona Roadstar GTX boots! I was lucky that work paid for my first couple of pairs. Like walking around in carpet slippers when off the bike. They do a Ladystar with an inbuilt heel raise that Mrs Flyer might like. HGB are very good, I brought my first bike from them and I think just over £200 for the service was a good deal. Oh and Rukka is I personally believe the best kit on the market if you can stretch to it. Certainly not cheap, but head and shoulders above other clothing.

That's pretty damm good, if you ask me?! That was the very first service, what used to be known as the 'run in' service, yeah? My Ducati needed it's first service, which is as you say a simple oil and filter change, at only 700 miles, and was about £200. Same with the annual service a year later, again a simple oil and filter change. It is a tad annoying, though, if you don't do high mileage as they squeeze you every 12 months with this 'annual' service when arguably the bike does not really need it. However, it keeps the warranty all tickety boo, I suppose. Eye watering prices for the gloves and boots, though. Without seeming impertinent, are you actually paying for all these jackets, boots and gloves or are they promotional to yourself? It's a whole different ball game for, say, some younger or new rider who can only afford one machine, and will look for the best glove or boot for the money, as opposed to money no object. A separate video would be possibly useful to many, whereby you compare clothing...ie jackets, gloves boots in budget, mid range and money no object categories?

Just had my 2020 VFR1200X serviced at 5k miles by my local Honda dealer, as it’s under PCP. £376 but that’s because I had a new back tyre as well. Yep, 7/10 for me as well. Didn’t get a courtesy bike as I went up to Tesco for a breakfast whilst it was done. Exactly the same report etc was sent to me which is quite interesting. Only slight query is they marked the chain and sprockets as green…. On a shaft drive bike…. 🤔👍👍

@headrace4863
@headrace4863 2 года назад
@@TheMissendenFlyer yep, sure did. They said that if a service task detailed in the report isn’t necessary on that model they mark it as green. Which is slightly odd as you’d think it could have an N/A or something selectable. Or, perhaps even more specific the schedule would be bike specific. They showed me the ‘job list’ for the vfr on a screen at the service desk (I asked about valve service (24k miles)) so they pulled up the schedule. Seems it’s just a generic form though… I did check the rear wheel after tyre fitting and there’s not a single mark on it which is a relief. I think they saw me taking a video of it on my ‘phone before I booked it in. Keep up the great work Andy, hope you can build on that mileage. 👍👍

You can save sooooo much money by doing your on service. It is pretty easy, if you are slightly a handy guy. You can find so many helpful videos for free or to buy for 100.00 US a set of video on how to. You can also buy Honda's service manual which is super to follow to take stuff apart. I love working on my GW and so addicted to the DCT. Every oil change,I reset the DCT. The only thing I don't do, is brake fluid flush. I let the dealer do it, at the same time, I let them inspect all lines and operation. You need basic tools ONLY. Enjoy this spaceship.

Like you I haven't put as many miles on my DCT Wing as I've wanted to due to Covid but have approaching 15000 miles on it now. Ref the smoothness of DCT I run the clutch initialisation process periodically as others have mentioned. What I have found is that as the mileage increased the smoothness improved and I have needed to run the process less frequently. Also I have found that fuel consumption kept improving until past 10000 miles but that seems to have stabilised now. You will probably find that the next service will be more expensive. What pushes the cost up is the amount of man hours required for all of the dismantling needed to perform simple tasks like accessing the air filter. It has to be said that it is a great bike from a user perspective but a bit of a pig to work on compared to most bikes. You mentioned the tyre pressure monitor. I have found that it works really well (it gave me very early warning of a puncture) but I have found that it is very sensitive and you do need to keep the cold tyre pressures within a very narrow window to prevent it activating on start up.

I believe having someone other than the dealer do the maintenance does not void the warranty. Just make sure the maintenance is documented. I have the service manual and do my own maintenance on my 1997 Honda Valkyrie…good thing as the local dealer refuses to work on bikes older than ten years. Put a K&N air filter on the bike and perform as much of the maintenance on the bike yourself…especially fluid changes. I have four bikes and have found the older bikes to be the easiest to work on. More electronics gizmos, means more problems that I can’t fix.

Price for the service didn't seem too bad. The gloves and boots, however, seem very expensive. I bought a pretty good ER5 with 24K on the clock to use as a winter hack for £700.
