Looks like you nailed it on all these details of history and architecture. We sometimes get customers that have no budget, but mostly what drives our most common kitchens and doors is finances. Also some people just don't care about the small cool details. So we build what they want.

If you ever find yourself in Lubbock, I recommend the National Ranching Heritage Center. They have an outdoor collection of homes/buildings gathered from around the area. Very good for studying the Old West ranch vernacular.

I'm from the UK and you are 100% correct, I bought a Georgian house that was near derelict, it had been remodeled in the1860's and again in the 1940's and again in the 1970's so there wasn't a lot of the original house inside left, the first thing I did was to put back the 6 over 6 windows which instantly give it it's Georgian look, then went on the hunt in skips, salvage yards, back gardens and even when people were ripping their house apart asking if I could have the mouldings, or shutters anything it's taken 14 years but it is now a comfortable Georgian house

Thanks a lot, Brent, this series ruined my ability to blindly ignore all of the errors builders have made and I've never noticed before. Now I drive down the road and see horizontal windows and say to myself why didn't they run them vertically as Brent showed me they should be. Or worse, I walk through my house and say I need to rip out all that 2-inch baseboard because it needs to be taller for it to look right. I LOVE that house because it’s my personal architectural style, but the only difference is that I’d not do stucco and rather would’ve done ALL stone on the facade, otherwise it’s perfect!!!♥️♥️♥️

I went to old salem this past weekend and after watching this series itmade me inspect and picture every little detail. And listening to the tour guides and hearing how the town progressed and seeing that portrayed in the buildings was something so new to me now. Can i ask and i assume the answer but cant confirm from google. But the small round holes on the end of the house in the attic area....vent holes?

Hi Brent. While watching the end of your Passion for Craft Podcast on Modernism (if you haven't watched Brent's other RU-vid channel, you should), I was struck by your comment about how you are constantly being asked by clients to consult on their homes and tell them what’s wrong with them and then you talked about how to add traditional features and details in order to improve their designs but that would seem to imply that nothing can be done to improve the proportions of a modern house's facade and still keep it looking “modern”. I would argue that some of the very first “modern” designs for buildings were actually quite good but it was the less talented Architects that came along later and copied those buildings (without understanding the process) that ultimately ruined the emerging style. Perhaps in your weekly Wednesday design video you could feature a modernist home and show us how you would improve it without adding any traditional design features or ornamentations? As to the approximate time that "modern" architectural design began, I would suggest including the work of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, starting in about 1893. If you really wanted to go back in time for "modernism" you could include the Crystal Palace from the Great Exhibition of 1851.

Houses were designed and built so much better decades ago. The thing that really drives me up the wall nowadays is the horrible roof lines. They may look dramatic from the outside (sometimes) but inside they lead to a mess of ugly slants and crop outs. I often find myself thinking: who designed this mess and where were they "educated"?

Amazing house with an incredible level of detail. This is one of the most impressive newly built houses showcased on RU-vid. It must be wonderful to live there. However, it somewhat resembles a French mansion, and some proportions don't seem quite right. Given your expertise from other in-depth videos, I'm sure you're aware of this. These discrepancies likely stem from the demands of modern living, the overall size of the property, and client specifications. For instance, most houses of this size typically feature a larger base with a grander staircase at the main entrance. The main entrance door appears overly wide, and the lantern-style lights seem somewhat large. Additionally, the external structure by the pool doesn't align at a 90-degree angle with the house, and the windows in the roof at the back look odd, though practical. Nonetheless, it seems you've successfully merged traditional style with modern luxury living.

Maybe architects who are designing the plans for family homes need more education in the beauty of historic exterior design elements. Long ago I did a university art history couse called, British Art and Architecture, and I have enjoyed architecture ever since.

The wooden beam ceiling (12:20 min) is not successful and has nothing to do with a French house of this size. In a villa like this in France, the beams are either not visible at all or only run in one direction, but never crosswise. Also, you won't find natural beams on a white painted ceiling at all.

How much more does a house cost once you properly add an old sole?

You wouldn't have stain grade wood in a period kitchen, but only because of the resources then available. Now we have those resources and so now they are appropriate. Railroading yourself into what they did in the past, without consideration for circumstances is foolish nostalgia. We should be using the resources we have now, while following the classical principles to build our homes. And as an aside, the "modern" design styles are essentially marxism applied to architecture; and intentionally or not, such designs crush the soul.

That "French House" is a true architectural masterpiece. What a letdown it is to see it decorated and furnished like a McMansion. So tacky and tasteless. Great potential ruined until the next buyer has more sense (hopefully.) Mr. Hull, the fight is important, but it doesn't stop at the architecture - arguably the furnishings and decor are just as important.
