General Electric released a crossover ramjet and rotating detonation to make a full-scale, propulsion system feasible at speeds faster than Mach 6. But what is RDE and how is this going to change aviation?

Yeah, the big problem with aerospikes is they don't conduct heat away and are also quite heavy. But if we can make advances in material science that eliminate those issues. Plus make advancements in rotating detonation engines. It's gonna be an amazing future, not just for more powerful engines, but more efficient and clean.

@mnomadvfx
@mnomadvfx 4 месяца назад
"Yeah, the big problem with aerospikes is they don't conduct heat away and are also quite heavy" That assumes the aerospike is solid metal, which isn't sensible on any rocket engine where weight is a concern as you multiply them to create the total rocket vehicle thrust. Better to make it hollow, but filled with pipes so the cryo-cooled fuel can be pumped through the engine to cool it down before it is used for thrust.
@kingarthurthe5th
@kingarthurthe5th 4 месяца назад
@@mnomadvfx To my knowledge, that's why 3d printing was used to make NASA's aerospike, since the cooling channels can be built-in the spike itself and they can use better geometry to channel the heat out faster. (My guess would be some form of gyroid, or tesla valve)

Here’s a good idea. You take an aero spike cone, split it in half, put the halves at the ends of a linear aerospike, making rotating detonation possible around the whole linear aerospike.(The rotating detonation wave would have to get around the ends of the linear aerospike continuously)You also use a very large 3-D printing machine to make the fuel tank possible, which wasn’t available at the time that SSTO vehicles were being developed.

Pressure does increase during detonation, but conventional jet and rocket engines do not detonate, they deflagrate. The injector pressure in a jet or rocket engine must be higher than the combustion chamber pressure, usually by at least 20%, because fluid only flows from higher pressure to lower pressure. In a rotating detonation engine, the detonation pressure is higher than the injection pressure, but only temporarily as the detonation wave passes by a given injector. This can cause backflow into the injector as the wave passes. The net pressure in the combustion chamber must still be lower than the injector pressure so that everything flows in the right direction.
@human_isomer

@@TheMooseOnTheLeft I don't see what your point is. There's an increase in pressure in all thermal expansion systems, not "unlike in a jet engine...".

It would have to fire outside of mass without disrupting the quatum magnetic fields of the material as decay. Mass is at the cosmic speed limit as mass now. Disrupting the flow of thermaldynamics singularities passing through mass increases decay of mass. Distance increases as mass decays into singularities. Heat singularities are waves of decay or renewable energy. Quatum magnetic fields are the strongest magnetic fields, but expansion weakens the magnetic fields holding materials together. The cooling system would have to be extremely colder to disrupt decay. Heat singularities passing through mass now as renewable energy striking out singularities in resistance are in equalization to thermaldynamics increasing distance increases decay and by rapidly increasing exchanging singularities as renewable energy also increases decay.Stars decay as heat loss of waves of thermaldynamics singularities as heat singularities outside of entanglement of mass as dark energy throughout space as perpetual motion. These singularities are always at the cosmic speed limit in resistance in and out of entanglement of mass. Quatum magnetic fields of redirected trajectories of thermaldynamics singularities passing through mass reduce distance of perpetual motion as force fields holding mass together in cycling circulation patterns. To increase distance of forward momentum, these renewable energy singularities strike our atmosphere in equilibrium now. The earth's magnetic field redirects quatum magnetic fields of grounding as weight of force towards the greater magnetic field of earth's center force of flow. Aging increases as decay increases. If renewable energy can't keep up with distance of equalization of exchanges of cold and thermaldynamics singularities cycling circulation then magnetic fields break down and more thermaldynamics singularities of heat loss. Cold stripping thermaldynamics singularities away faster than replacement of pressure.

I had an idea for a RDE. Probably been thought of but, imagine a circular Tesla valve set up but all channels are twisted like gun rifling. Could be several layers towards center with “twist” angle it self variable reducing and expanding pinch points in Tesla valve. Also defeats the no moving parts idea, but unit itself could spin within a stationary cylinder. 3/4 of the way twist, valve shapes are reduced before exit to kickstart fluid centrifugal motion.

A common problem still hasn't been addressed. Even having a small amount of efficiency it doesn't have enough impact. I have studied this for many years and missing a key component. A recoil action is required for more than 75% efficiency. Using less fuel is the goal and gains in displacement. I'm calculating speeds way beyond mach 10 because I also studied this by observing what characteristics was employed in the Orion project. The detonation was raw but it only captured a pie cut from the explosion and wasn't really effective or efficient due to a mass that was equally lost because it wasn't contained. I came to the very same conclusion and by having the engine 3D printed and yeah this one has moving parts. We can't contain a Nuclear explosion of that caliber but here's how I captured the pie . A study of Naval Destroyers with very big guns , when fired the recoil is absorbed by the entire ship , moving this mass a degree or so of actual. My recoil wouldn't be firing shells but just fuel and oxidation but what became important is the ignition system and the best would be Plasma which is provided by laser's and disk which also offers a boost as well . If you need to know what's happening just take a look at the Orion's pistons and absorption plate . Pistons are the keys because a recoil by any action in space is a way of free thrust granted. The day I get a contract is when they all lose . I took on what Wernher Von Braun signed on to the Orion project and did what he did , he studied the characteristics because it would be effective but not with the current technology during his time . After all he did bring forth the Saturn V and the hand made F1 engines that put humanity's first step on the moon . I figured out how and why this is important to make an effective pulse detonation propulsion system that allows for greater travel throughout our solar system Cheers

No, jet engines work by spraying the fuel and creating a vapor that ignites, kind of a mix between a liquid and a gas
@TheMooseOnTheLeft

This is commonly done for a few reasons. In jet engines, the oxidizer is already a gas, and in rocket engines, the fuel and sometimes oxidizer are used as coolants which boil and become a gas during the cooling process.

This engine will never see Mach 16 or even close to that number, that's my prediction. To achieve this speed you need to be at the edge of space or in space where there is little or no air friction. And if your flying that high already, it makes more sense to just orbit like a satellite and setup a reentry glide path back down to your destination. That coming down wouldn't need any engine at all. A small motor at that point for course correction is all that would be needed. H.G. Wells predicted we would be shooting spacecraft into space with a giant cannon. The movie version of his predictions came out in 1936 and his prediction date was 2036 for the moon.
