Robert, I certainly agree that using the built in functionality of the 9700 and 705 to accomplish this makes a lot of sense. For most people, in most situations, that will be the way to go. I think what I really like about this little program is that Icom actually took the time to make it. Making small programs like this doesn't seem to be in their typical priority list, which makes it nice that they made this a reality. Thanks for posting and joining the conversation! 73 - AC3DS

This is the second video you've posted, that I found useful. So, I've subscribed. I appreciate how you don't blast through it, this, allowing your viewers to follow. I've poked through your list of videos, and found your pota posts from Presque Is. Looks like we're "kind of" close, me being around 40 miles east of Buffalo. Maybe I'll work you on 40, or 80 meters sometime. Or, run into you while I'm out and about, activating pota. Oh....what's the sweater reference I've read about? It's that time of the year.

Thanks Shawn! I'm glad that this video (and the sweater) worked for you. I agree, having this be a native functionality really would be worthwhile. With every single 7300 sold being susceptible to the battery dying (and not easily replaceable), it feels like they are trying to partially address the issue through this means. Having an inaccurate clock isn't a dealbreaker for me, but I sure hope that they will fix this issue before the next model. Not holding my breath, but wishing and hoping all the same.

Hi, I guess my 7300 already had this feature built in, as my clock has the ability to show seconds, so I was able to set it to WWV using the receiver. However, one strange glitch with the clock is that although I am in EST (which is minus 5 hours UTC), the ICOM was setting me as six hours UTC. So, for some reason, to get the correct UTC time, I had to set it for minus four (-4) hours UTC instead of (-5) as it should be. I will still download the software, just the same. I like your channel and I have subscribed!

I got all excited hoping that this would somehow fix the battery drain problem that affects the time! Time and date is critical for recordings which I constantly do. Now, 8 months after purchase, I'm beginning to see the time reset back to 0 when I've disconnected from the power supply even if only for a few hours.

I hear you. It really is a shame that they used such a small battery in the 7300, and didn't make it replaceable with any ease. I've seen mods where they replace the on-board battery with a button cell holder and battery, as well as external batteries, both of which should work just fine, but should never be necessary. While this new program could, with some adaptation, allow you to set the time every time you start the radio and are connected to a computer, it is not an elegant solution. I guess the nice thing is that I now have something to look forward to... surface mount soldering! 73.

@@transmittinguntilrobotsrep1045 Indeed! It's an interesting update that's for sure. About mods, I just have such a hesitation opening it up and doing a messy wiring job just for a battery holder as if it were an old CB radio. Not elegant at all. (Rant follows, I'm not an expert on the feature set of either of the rigs presented, other than knowing vaguely that they are modern advanced microprocessor controller and software defined, SDR on the receive side at least making the unit amenable to all the stuff you might do with a PC and fldigi, for example:) Guy shows method to update radios' time to that of connected PC, itself presumably sync'ed recently to NIST via NTP. NIST/NTP documentation can tell you about the tolerance of this sync, typically on the order of ~10-100 ms, depending on the stratum of the timeserver your PC sync'd to and of course your PC's clock accuracy and time since its last update. MEANWHILE: both radios are videoed receiving WWV. WWV is subject to the vagaries of HF signal propagation, which cause some jitter in the delay of it's "on time" signals, but NIST documentation says that within the USA, this delay is ~15 ms worst case. So WWV is going to be, generally, a better source for sync than NTP to PC and PC to radio time-transfer. WWV was DESIGNED to be a time and frequency standard to be used to transfer time to local stations. But alas here, we see iCOM not decoding and utilizing the time signals it can receive over the air, directly (and WWV also transmits a digital version of the timecode, as a subcarrier on the human-intelligible audio time signal). WOW! What a foobar design! GPS is far tighter in its delay variation window, compared to HF. So, if your rig has a GPS receiver, it DANG WELL SHOULD have a function to sync time off the GPS constellation, which is traceable back to NIST, and is
@atsdroid
@atsdroid 2 года назад
Gol--ly, even my silly CASIO G-Shock wristwatch can sync directly off the air on WWVB, and that's longwave. HF is easier to get, despite being subject to more propagation variation than longwave. Hell, just integrate CASIOs longwave reception hardware into your rig's RTC, and you're all set. My model can sync off any of six different national longwave radio beacons, depending on set home location. It fits my wrist, and is solar-powered even! Disregard for GPS, if the rig has a GPS receiver chipset, use that, GPS is the best radio time-transfer standard we've got. NTP? That's generally worse than HF. Server stratum's vary, and network propagation delay is highly variable. All this will get you to within +/- 1 second of standard UTC, but if precision is what you're after, HF is better than NTP, and GPS is better still. Baaaaaaa (super Picard facepalm here)

Another idea, if they could incorporate into the radio's firmware, would be a program similar to the MultiPsk Clock sync program, so you can sync the clock on your radio, directly from wwv or chu if the radio does not have built in gps.
@transmittinguntilrobotsrep1045
@transmittinguntilrobotsrep1045 2 года назад
I love this idea. Syncing with WWV might not work for everyone, but having it as an option sure would be nice. WWV uses a different tone for on the minute and hour, so if you could input the time, and then click 'sync' which would then invoke listening for the tone (Analog Read; if tone = x, set time.) This is where I wish there was access to the programming on the radio so that we could hack this together ourselves.
@dannelson8556

this is silly, it's simple, tune into wwv, listen for the beep and press the button, seriously how hard is that.. I've been doing this for over 50 years, when I first sit down at my radio for the day, I tune into WWV and listen to the updates and solar report as the radio warms up, I then enter the clock settings and wait t=for the beep, when I hear the beep I press the button and now my radio clock is synced.. Back in the late 60's and 70's I spent 10 years cruising on a sailboat and did this every morning. we didn't have GPS back then so you needed to know what you were doing, nowadays it seems like ham radio is nothing but a bunch of appliance operators, it's so sad to see ham radio dumbed down to nothing more than glorified CB .

I have a few Icoms that I would love to do this to. My OCD makes me adjust the clocks every time I use them. Does this software just send a time signal to the radio when you tell it to? Or is the radio being constantly synced? Once the sync signal is received, does the radio then revert to its inaccurate clock and require adjustment again in the future? What happens if the usb cable is removed? Thank you
@transmittinguntilrobotsrep1045
@transmittinguntilrobotsrep1045 2 года назад
Good questions: The software sends a CI-V command to set the time when you click the Run button or when you run the shortcut. It does it only once and does not continue to send commands, meaning that you need to manually click Run or open the shortcut each time you want to sync. Once the signal is received, the radio will use the power / internal battery to maintain the time. It is true that if the battery in the 7300 is dying, you are likely to need to run this program on a somewhat regular basis since the time will become offset as the internal clock is unable to maintain proper time. Regarding the cable's status, regardless of whether or not the cable is plugged in, the radio will rely on the internal clock to keep time. The USB connection simply provides a quick method for setting that time. It would certainly be possible to use a scheduler program to automatically run the Shortcut every time your computer starts, or at some other desired interval, just to keep the time accurate on the radio without the need for manually invoking it. I really appreciate the questions and am glad you posted. I hope that this helps! 73, AC3DS

A few things worth considering: 1) Check the CIV settings and see if they are set the same between the radio and the program. 2) Try right clicking and running the program as an administrator. 3) If it operates in any way similar to RS-BA1 from Icom, it could be an issue with the virtual com port being in use elsewhere. You made this more complicated than needs to be and you don't have to remove circuit board to replace battery. Remove top and bottom covers and remove front display panel of radio along with 2 ribbon cables. Use a heat gun to heat up batter solder and remove it. Purchase a 2032 battery holder ( Amazon comes with holder and wires.) and rechargeable battery LIR 2032 or ML2032. You can use double sided tape to secure battery holder to the RF shield cover to the left side of the circuit board. Your way of removing battery with the iron could damage the CKT. Bd. tabs and disconnection all the other ribbon cables and removing CKT BD is more dangerous of breaking something. Your an amateur CB operator. By the way in the beginning are you two guys speaking in tongues? There are other videos on RU-vid that show an easier way to do this. Having a battery holder hanging on the outside is a terrible idea. My opinion.
