It is called COMMON SENSE regarding about shipping. If the item is fragile in any way, you have to ship in the NEW box (not used box) but otherwise, ship it in poly bag. On certain items (clothing, shoe, vintage paper, postcard, etc) you could either ship in poly bag or stiff mailer. If I sold expensive jacket as an example, I will ship it in a box (if I have it) but if I don't have correct size box then I will double polybag the item trying to protect the item.

I went on a trip this spring to a mining town where my ancestors immigrated to. The owner of a tourist shop said he had one of the few working, open to the public, coin-operated stereo card viewers. I never knew about them until I got a lesson from him. It was so cool to see a bunch of 3D photos of people my ancestors probably worked with. This guy was knowledgeable; he had all kinds old phonebooks, directories, and local knowledge. Good stuff. I hope to take my niche to a website in the next year and probably should have years ago. I just have to get over the sales tax liabilities that scare me. My store won't be connected in any way to eBay. I'll use a program to copy listings over and then unsubscribe from it. My items are unique enough that most of my sales come from Google searches anyway.

It is fascinating to see how your mind works. Thanks for sharing. I wish you the best in this new endeavor. I think you have a big advantage, and that is. you have product that no one (not even the Chinese) can replicate. Another fascinating thing is that you are basically doing this by yourself. I have a question - Were your website to become successful would you invite similar sellers to join in and sell alongside you?

I don’t have a plan to bring in other sellers and I don’t think I will grow the website beyond the photograph niche.

You can't compare Steve Jobs with anybody else. I just don't understand the purpose of contacting the buyer in the first place. As a seller, last thing you want to do is having a conversation with buyer. Do you really wants to take a chance of talking to buyer who is mentally unstable? Answer is HELL NO. You are comparing apple vs orange. We are RESELLER, we don't design, produce the item, we resell finished product.

Question… around 10 min you say you are driving trafic to ebay… you mean from your Shopify store because you have a link to ebay from there ?

@@juliedubois5650 Lit and Shopify have allowed me to correctly index my eBay listings with Google Merchant Services. Now my eBay listings are appearing on Google Shop and are being indexed on Google search. When people click on those listings, it will take them to the eBay checkout.

I thought about getting my own website many years ago but I decided against it b/c of security reason. Every top 100 companies got hacked at least one time, they have their own IT department and still they got hacked. If your website got hacked, you are liable for it. You might get sue for that. Second of all, you have to file taxes in every state (unless you meet the threshold), in other words, you have MORE paper work to do. You are NOT making more money b/c your time is tied up with paperwork, you could of used that time to source more item.

If hacking happens, I will cross that bridge when I get there. The tax thing can be outsourced to others.
