This channel IS THEE most inspirational music channel I've found for such a very long time. I'm a 60s flower power child, originally from London and I've never heard of Indie Folk but there's just something that has set my musical soul on FIRE ! I just absolutely LOVE it ! Even my precious Jack Russell terrier is really chilling to this as he is very much inspired by music. I'm bringing up a virtual piano to see what is going on with the chords and melody within this genre, I quickly found the 'secret formula' (that at least this selector of these songs likes): Play in a major scale, mostly E Major or Eb Major (one song dared to go down to D, and another all the way down to A, and another Ab) (and by female singers, curiously), and for the melody, only use the first six notes of the major scale (which includes the Millennia Yelp 5-3 interval, which must be played a lot) AND ONLY the first six notes OF THE SCALE (meaning do not stray). A few songs were adventurous and threw a M7 note into the melody. TABOO: DO NOT play the b7 note (that's the note that your grandparents listened to) (which would be me), One song did venture there, along with the b3, to its peril. The other rules are sing soft and play acoustic, of course (electric is taboo - it would be as outrageous to the audience as Bob Dylan was when he went electric in front of his folk crowd). I like this genre for its emotive feel (my preferred type of music, and an aspect which I value more than any style, formula, trend, fashion, or genre). The lyrics seem to be much better than they were 50 years ago when singers and lyrics were token in Progressive Rock ('my' music), and where male singers were added to attract the female half of the prospective paying audience (Progressive rock was all about the instrumentalists), and in Pop, the lyrics rule was 'KISS' (which was Motown's hard rule, for 'Keep It Simple and Sweet' (or 'stupid' as some suggested). I say 'seem' because I was conditioned to ignore the lyrics (their being token in my time), so I haven't investigated the 'secret formula' for that here (and I do mean the 'copycat' formula)... but love appears to be the preferred theme (in whatever stage - new, satisfied, worried, missed, dying, or dead). As you might suspect, for a creative type with a broad range of creative 'need' this genre is extremely restrictive, having become formulaic (as formulaic as Nashville, which banks on formula). On the other hand it is a good (meaning easy) starting point for very new artists, and in Pop music (including Indie), the timber of voice is paramount (since the chords/melodies/instruments are all the same). People like slightly new (but not too new) variations within the genre formula (which is how genres slowly change). In summary, I like it, but it seems to be a genre for one-hit wonders, where every singer is different; and my having broad artistic interests, I'm not sure how much of it I can take (it would be like wearing a shirt that is too tight which strangles me) (yes, I would go 'gaaaaaak!')

I found your analysis interesting, but I must respectfully disagree on a few points. Every genre has tropes, and music in general has "rules" that are generally followed and occasionally broken. I won't criticize chess for always being played on a checkered board, or tennis for having a net. In music, if you break all the rules, you wind up with noise. In my view, music doesn't need to be musically or even lyrically complex in order to be good music. It just needs to have soul. Also, most songs in general are about some form of love, and most songs use major keys. Of course, if I sound defensive, it's probably because I wrote one of these songs. XD Come to think of it, I'm pretty sure it's a love song in Eb major...
