The British military has a new piece of kit that vastly increases the chances of shooting down a drone with a rifle.
Around 500 SMASH X4 sighting systems are being used across the three services by close combat troops.
The device was developed by Israeli firm Smart Shooter, and was shown off to Forces News fitted to a 5.56mm L85 assault rifle by Squadron Leader Hugo Morris, a Counter Uncrewed Aerial Systems specialist from the RAF Regiment.

@almyor
@almyor 12 дней назад

@automated8493
@automated8493 12 дней назад
@@almyor yeah I’m aware of what the system does. The video explains that, what I’m saying is that drones are too fast and too reactive for something like this. There was a documentary on the front lines in Ukraine recently and they were just unable to react to the constant pressure from drones. They were so focused on the enemy in front that they were always too late when a dropper drone was above. As for FPV drones, no chance. The solution is not glamorous, it’s just literally a squad member with a semi auto shotgun filled with birdshot. That’s the real solution.

@kimjonglongdong3158
@kimjonglongdong3158 8 дней назад
@@adog3129 The thing with FPV/"Kamikaze" type drones, is that they are very small, very cheap, and best used en masse. While Ukraine seems to have mostly switched to purpose built drones as opposed to repurposed civilian drones for "kamikaze" missions from what I've seen, they are still very fragile bits of kit. The fact is if you go about trying to make these drones stronger and more survivable, they loose possibly their most attractive characteristic, their price tag. The rotor blades on these drones can be snapped off by clipping the thinnest of tree branches or even leaves if you're unlucky. They are highly unsuitable to anything except clear and low low wind conditions, again because they are so light and fragile. in short, even though they are often "made for combat", they aren't much more survivable than civilian counterparts. As for range of a shotgun, with this type of sight attached, I reckon you'd get 40-50m with very high success rate, maybe up to 100m depending on if you adopt specialised ammunition as well as carefully selected components like chokes. Google reckons bird shot is effective out to about 45m. Is a bird stronger or weaker than the blades of an FPV drone, IDK. Could you develop a similarly cheap ammunition that works at longer ranges specifically for anti-drone tasking, probably?

There was a hunting scope similar to this that came out a few years ago. It had an ultrasonic wind speed and direction sensor that projected out a couple hundred meters. It also measured range, temperature and barometric pressure. The hunter would put the crosshairs on the target and hit the processing button. The scope computer would calculate wind drift and drop and move the reticle to compensate. First shot hits.

Sounds about right for military hardware only sold to national militaries, with the first generation and little competition. Even better civilian optical rifle scopes can easily cost more than the rifle itself. The bulk of the R&D of every single normal rifle scope today was already done decades ago. They are all just variations of it now. The thing in this video, though, would have required developing the hardware and software from scratch, pretty much. Furthermore, military equipment is always twice as expensive, or more, than regular civilian stuff because it will have to withstand manhandling. But yes, it's expensive. If it works well, though, it could be worth the price. Compared to a soldier's life, £20,000 is nothing.

The claim of "a 70% chance of hitting a drone first shot" belies a fallacy. It's not giving you a 70 percent chance of hitting with the first shot you *want* to take, it's not letting you fire a bullet until that bullet has what it thinks is a 70% chance of hitting. From drone videos I've watched from Ukraine, they have a reaction time of about 1 second from hearing the drone to being blown up, How will this scope help? I bet the Lockton takes longer than the drone strike itself. Let alone drones that fly high enough to not be seen or heard dropping grenades. This seems like an utter waste of time. Automated or Electronic warfare is what is needed. Not a scope on an outdate rifle. Ukraine also made, what, 1 million drones?! How many of these do we have, at what cost? 400x units at a cost of £20k never have enough to stop the drone waves that will be incoming. 20k per scope means each user would have to shoot down 40x drones to cover the cost of ONE SINGLE SCOPE.

i dont think locking the trigger not to shoot is a good idea when something that can come at your at 200mph with an explosive device attached to it is a good idea, the panic and potental get you killed because it wont let you fire is crazy you may as well let it shoot its self at drones.

@ArkadiaEternal 28 дней назад
@@Fireclaws10 That’s a fair point. However, the argument you’re making is that it’s okay to sacrifice effectiveness for convenience. In addition, sometimes sections already take shotguns as mission specific equipment so the convenience is minor. Ultimately I’d say it would be better to develop this system for a shotgun for the sake of redundancy and effectiveness. This is because if this system fails… then the section would just be left with just rifles. Whereas if the system was mounted on a shotgun and it fails at least they’ll have a shotgun.

Anyone who’s used a drone can tell you… A drone operator can rock up, the drone will pop up in the air, does what it needs to, land and then the operator is walking out with seconds. Realistically a drone in the hands of a good operator doesn’t loiter. If the drone operator knows what he needs to take a photo of, the whole process from walk in to walk out is only 2 or 3 minutes. A DJI Mini that’s under 250g is so small that’s it’s invisible at an altitude of 120 meters (400 ft).

Shotgun doesn't have the range or lethality. Shotgun and ECM are extra kit to carry. This just goes on one rifle in the section and would be able to cover the section area. It may not reach out to an observation drone but any drone carrying a warhead would have to come close enough to be killed.
