I crashed on this on Tuesday. There was wet sand on the road that took my rear wheel out. The air bag deployed before i touched the ground. I believe it saved my spine.
Got my Tech Air 5 a couple months ago within my first 6 months of riding. I use it all the time, don't care if it's 100º outside. I invested in wearable gear (protection) and bike protection from day one. Zero $ on fancy exhausts, or anything that won't really help me if something goes wrong. In big part thanks to you for helping understand the importance of this and the risks of riding.
Yeah I got mine a few months ago as well, agreed, I don't care how hot it is. Today in NY it's 94 degrees F real feel 103 degrees F. I wear full protection no matter what ...
Nice I wanna get this airbag vest too. Just to give some advice, exhaust systems or slipons are actually very important for safety as they make stock bikes that are almost silent in traffic heard and visibility in traffic is crucial when riding. Visibility/being heard. Loud pipes.
@rohandhanota9944 nice ill check them out. The only thing that worries me about these devices is the thought of them actually not functioning while crashing, leaving you with actually no form of protection. Not even padding.
@@carlcarlssen4299 that's a concern I have too, especially when you low side I've heard of it sometimes not activating. For that reason I actually wear my shoulder pads in the jacket too. The good part is this vest (I have the same one but revit version) has a built-in CE-1 level back protector. So with my elbow & shoulder pads and this back protector I feel like I'm decently protected even if it doesn't go off. They do ask that you take out any back/chest protectors from your jacket when you wear this, as it interferes with the airbag system. But I think shoulder is ok.
@@moto.kartik YEah it seems like with the shoulder and elbow protectors then this airbag vest is good, even in the event of it not opening up. My next worry, and this sounds a bit crazy to most ppl. I dont like being surrounded by electronics, let alone ones directly on top of me for various reasons but one, is the risk of cancer. Read about bluetooth devices and why ppl quit wearing them when they first came out.
An important point you seem to overlook is the airbag needs room to expand under your jacket of 2 to 3 inches according to Alpinestars. Your outer jacket is too tight for this room needed to operate the airbag.
Your statement is correct if you are using a non-alpinestars brand jacket. If wearing an alpinestars brand, tech-air compatible jacket, the jacket can be the same size as the vest thus be more snug fitting. The alpinestars tech-air jackets have expandable panels to accommodate vest deployment. To your point, my Revit jackets in contrast have to be at least a size larger than my tech-air 5 vest in order to accommodate deployment as there are no expandable panels.
Shout out to you From Minnesota!!! I work at the Maple Grove- Cycle Gear. And shared this with our team!!! Thanks so much for all of this information! Very informative and I plan that myself and the team can implement this.
Love that you bought the same jacket as me. It's the only leather jacket I found that is VERY breathable. I'm actually getting cold on the chest in the summer (on evenings). The only thing I don't like about this jacket is that I can't fully turn my head on straights/intersections since the shoulder armor hard-stops the chin.
Yep - i started riding at age 56 and when i did, i bought the Alpinestars TechAIR Street and the Valparaiso jacket which was one of the jackets to which the system attaches. The vest is a much better idea because you can use it under a variety of jackets. I have fallen off my bikes at slow speeds a number of times and have even rolled completely over and the vest has not deployed. I’m glad it has not deployed because 1) in those situations, I did not need it, and 2) it’s expensive to get the CO2 cartridges recharged. It makes me worry just a little that it also might not deploy if i actually need it but i’m not too worried because it uses three accelerometers to determine whether or not you have been impacted or are about to impact the ground. If Greg bought the Medium vest, what size is the jacket? one size up to accommodate the vest? i’m 61 now, so it’s probably about time for me to get new gear.
I’ve been using the Tech Air 5 for a couple of years now, and really like it for its comfort & sense of protection (luckily haven’t needed the protection it so far, fingers crossed). Been seriously considering the Fusion Jacket, look forward to your updates on how the combo works, particularly in 100F+ heat!
@@MotoJitsu yup, you mentioned that in the video. Same here. But since I’ve got 100F+ and 90%+ humidity for 6 months out of the year, I’m always open to options that offer top shelf protection and a little extra breathability. Hence I look forward to hearing what you think of the Fusion Jacket/TA5 combo.
I got GP Plus R V3 Rideknit Leather Jacket from Alpinestars and it's very comfortable even with the tight fit and I have the tech air 5 too. Riding during summer is ok, I feel in it even better than in my old textil jacket. As soon as you ride at least 60km/h it's not hot in it anymore thanks to that mesh thingy and the jacket is perfored in some places. Another absolutely great thing I can recommend is to wear some special shirt designed to be weared under the moto gear. I have dainese functional pants and rebelhorn functional t-shirt (if it's the correct term in english) for hot weather and it is absolutely awesome! Cannot ride without it anymore. Nice vid, thanks and have a good one. Cheers
I use the Helite turtle 2, tethered to the bike. I hope it'll never have to be activated. If it does, I'll be sure to give a review. Keep on the good work and cheers from the Netherlands!
I agree, always wear your gear no matter the temps. My approach is a little different lol. It’s been (with our crazy and nasty humidity here), “feels like”110-114° every day for the past month…so, it’s parked 😂
I like the Helite more because when it goes off, you only have to change the cartridge for 20-50 euros without having to send it back. With the Alpinestars after each deployment, you have to send it back to the factory for a rebuild which costs 350 euros😮
@@MotoJitsu Because who knows how long you'll have to wait to get the vest back from the factory. It's just something to think about when shopping for an airbag vest. Cost is still a consideration when it comes to gear, is that not apparent to you?
Then I'll put in a back protector in the jacket while I wait for it to come back...or wear my 1 piece leather suit, obviously. Cost is not a consideration for gear...it's an investment, like courses and track days which I do monthly.
@@MotoJitsu and I'm sure you realize that people use a cost/benefit risk/reward filter when purchasing anything, whether that's gear or anything else. I buy the best gear that I can afford, which means taking cost into consideration. I save up for track days which also take cost into consideration. I like the helite better because not only is it less expensive but it protects more of your upper torso and lower back, you can change your own cartridges, and you can buy a low tech version that uses a tether. Although as far as aesthetics go the alpinestars wins for sure!
Also tech air user here..made the switch after landing on my side, just where traditional gear has no protection.. and broke scapula in the glenoid area..(the piece you feel below your arm pit when reaching out with opposite hand)
Slick equipment! And really nice you donated all that gear and cash. Good guy. Im thinking about a Helite with the tether and gas cartridge. Just beginning to get my stuff together. Bought a Shoei SF-RF full face and will add the rest. Still lots to do on the bike before I take it out. I live in southern Indiana and driving on my way to and from the closest small town (6500) I saw six bikes and NONE of them had any gear and two of them had their ladies on the back, also with no gear. Insanity. Thanks for the review and all your encouragement.
It’s great airbags are becoming more affordable. I got my tech air 5 recently and I’m less stressed to begin my moto adventure :) Hopefully you’ll never need it! Cheers!
Nice setup. I got an Alpinestar Fastair jacket last year that I love. I wonder if the vest would fit under it. I also have been pleasantly surprised that the heavier jacket, I had a mesh jacket previously, ventilates well in hot weather.
Just got the vest paired with the alpinestars viper 3 jacket. Very comfortable and feel alot safer on the bike now, especially being new to riding after a 30 year break.
ive have a tech-Air 5 sense I started riding... I love it and never notice im ever wearing it. battery lasts a long time I can do multiple 2 to 4 hour rides with it... and it becomes a CE level 1 if the battery dies.
I also use the Tech Air 5 vest and I love it. Little hack: If you want to wear it under a 1 piece suit, put the vest in the suit, allign the sleeves of the vest with the sleeves of the suit and put it on together.
congrats MJ! I love my tech-air 5, have had it for about 2 seasons, feel absolutely naked without it. I'll sometimes go a couple blocks away to grocery store in tshirt, all i think is "what an expensive piece of decor sitting in my room" XD
I also have a Tech-5 as well as a Helite Leather Vest, The tether on the Helite, gives me a touch more confidence since it's Analog, I know it's going off, the Tech is proven as well, but there's always that feeling that it may not work ??????????
I watched a tutorial the other day on that vest and the jacket had to have some room because if your jacket is to tight it won't deploy properly and you're jacket looks way to tight. Hope it works when you need it🙏🏽but just thought I'd share that with you
I also hit the gym(understatement) and that alpinestars tech air in 4XL fit me looking like football shoulder pads. Just way too muscular for it. But the Daniese smart vest being sleeveless and stretchy does fit in 2XL so I went with that.
I’ve been looking at the Dainese smart vest too as I wear a Dainese Super speed 4 and even tho I feel great and protected quite a bit with chest and back protection added i just think about the airbag being that much nicer just incase I go down at freeway speeds 🤷🏻♂️
you need a little bit baggy, the airbag vest can be tight, but really should go a size up with the compatible jackets so that the air bag had a little room to inflate properly.
Nice! Welcome to the airbag vest club! I wear a helite vest. It gets hot but safety is worth it. Also looking jacked haha! Im thinking about buying ur book. Took the msf brc and the returning rider course. Looking for the next course or steps to improve!
Greg, the leather jacket must not be snug over the vest, otherwise there is insufficient space for the airbag to deploy! It's also stated in the user's manual fo the TechAir 5.
I have the same jacket 💯 it’s awesome I just wish it had a proper Velcro strap for the zipper, it can move around a lot when riding. But besides that the ventilation is superb and it definitely makes me feel pretty protected.
I use a tech air 5 for track days and the street and would buy it again. I can't feelt it while riding. The only negative thing, is the additional heat in the summer, because of that extra layer.
Nice jacket. I think textile gear is fine for doing the speed limit. But I feel the same as you. If youre going a bit faster you should really be wearing leathers.
@@MotoJitsu Im thinking more in terms of abrasion resistance. If you fall off at a lower speed you're not going to slide as far. Therefore a textile jacket has a better chance of holding up.
@@MotoJitsu I wear 2 piece leathers. I dont know whats not to understand. It seems to me Im agreeing with what you said in the above video. Leather offers more protection than textile obviosly. But thats not to say textile doesnt have its place.
I spent a ton of time debating the techair 5 and the Klim in-motion. Curious if you compared them and why you choose techair? Love your videos and I use you’re app to practice. Thanks!
Just been looking at this same Jacket, seems like the best option for hot weather protection. I'm about your size and was looking at the size 52 for a proper fit, would appreciate knowing which size you got and does it wear in a little like a normal leather jacket? Thank you
I'm thinking that outer jacket might be a bit too tight which won't allow for proper expansion of the vest to give you optimum protection. Just my opinion. Totally agree on full gear, 60 or 90 degree outdoor temp.
Saw you yesterday at Cycle Gear trying this on when i was picking up my new tire. You'll enjoy the app & gps. Its just HOT. Not real breathable BUT SAFE..lol Enjoy...see you out in the twisties
My wife got me a TechAir3 for fathers day.... loved it! Used it about 5 times and now it won't charge... LED won't even light up. Started acting flaky on the 3rd ride with it. Turning itself off and on. I made sure the zip was closed well and everything. Now the thing won't even light up at all... not even when plugged in to charger. Never been in rain, wet, misused or thrown around. Pretty disappointing for $599. I agree on having good gear but seems quality may not be there even when you pay for it.
I currently use HitAir which is tethered, both a vest and 3 jackets (overkill). Tech-Air is nice and similar to the Klim vest in my opinion. Sometimes I use my HitAir vest with a Bohn Armor mesh shirt, but I don’t think the shirt would be good at surviving abrasion on it’s own. I like HitAir because of the neck roll that inflates, and they offer a chest piece, which is something missing from a lot of jackets. The Tech-Air does offer great all around upper torso protection. Thanks great video. AGATT!
I looked at the tech 5 air as well, but didn’t like its not user serviceable after the airbag deploys. It will set you back between 200-300 dollar to get it repacked. I went for the helite e-turtle airbag vest. User servicable and also braces your neck when it deploys.
Tech-Air 5 is only (maybe others as well but I do not know about them) when is activated it covers your shoulders as well. Others just do torso as a regular vest.
Have you heard if any of those deer whistle warning things actually work. We have so many deer up in Oregon, but the scenery is just awesome. Keep the brakes covered n blessings.
I’d be interested if the vest fits under the textile jacket too. Maybe with back armour removed. I want to find an airbag system that doesn’t lock me into a specific jacket. I’ve wanted to replace my back armour for some time and an airbag seems like the way to go. Though they don’t seem to go as low on the spine as some of the armour systems.
If you've got 2 inches of air in your jacket without the regular back protector, it fits. I use my Tech Air 5 in my suit, under my leather jackets, under Kevlar hoodies,...
Great gear and the high cost is absolutely worth it for the protection if gives, BUT... one thing came to mind when I saw how close-fitting both items were. With a tight air vest inside a tight leather jacket, what happens if the vest goes off? The high pressure gas will do what it needs to do and expand the vest very rapidly, but with almost no space between the two where does it expand into? I would worry that the jacket's seams would lose the battle and maybe suffer damage to the stitching? Hope I'm wrong and even if I'm not it would still be worth it for the protection etc, but might be costly to have to replace the jacket? Ride safe brother and I hope you never need to find out!
I got to have the protection. I wouldn't be comfortable riding without it. Yeah, it gets hot but when riding, it cools off. I wish I had more vents on my helmet. That it a very interesting setup with the airbag. I am curious on how it gets deployed.
awesome jacket, I love the look of it, I had the same one, but had to sell it because unfortunately it did not fit me well, the fabric on the arms was very tight and uncomfortable, so be weary of how much you hit the gym :))
It’s this company that makes airbag pants .. ! I was thinking bout it but it’s a start up thing . But I took a splash a few months ago n I landed on my side my whole side leg was bruised but my knee ( which I didn’t hit directly) man that knee still hurts when walking n up steps it made me really depressed cus I couldn’t walk or work for months after my leg etc healed . None of this gear did anything for my side of my knee! These airbag could had !!!!!!!!!!
Moto jitsu got the full jacket and trousers well love alpine stars fits bit tight on me lol too many butties lol been out in 30 degree most in uk is 19 cool
if you put jacket on top of inflatable balloon cushions - aren't you reducing or just disabling the inflate process ? it's snug alight but that means almost no space for the inflatable areas to inflate , no?
The airbag is a must for me. I always use my Helite Turtle 2, no matter the weather, distance, speed, or whatever. I have a question. Don't you need to leave a little space for the airbag to expand when activated?
Like my KLIM jacket, I hate all the branding though, its too much... it's like a Harley rider wearing all their Harley Davidson gear... they're like walking billboards or sponsors without being paid for sponsoring. Revit is good with the minimal branding on their stuff. BUT, I find the fit with their stuff too off and uncomfortable.
If money is no object, that's the best probably on the market👍 I don't like the subscription, mandatory service etc,and the Helite Turtle 2 was a lot cheaper that way... Good to see airbags propagate anyway 👍 Congrats on your new addition of riding gear 🎉
@@MotoJitsu That's great👍.You have a good point about recharge fee for sure-the vest/you being in one piece to recharge🤞.And it definitely looks better, couldn't tell someone is wearing one(small point, but still) Hopefully you shall never need it🍀🤞
I have the og tech air which needs to be used with a compatible jacket its really good unfortunately i got to use it when i looped my bike 🙃 didn't feel a thing my only issue is charging it can be annoying aome times
I love my vest. Great technology. Just beware if carrying it around always check to make sure the clasp has not closed before you put the vest down. Ask me how I know 🤦🏻♂️ $$$
how does the Alpine handle with high speeds? My current leather bottom back side will flap around from the draft of air coming over the top of the bike and down my back. The Alpine looks really snug. Thumbs up for this video!
How do you wash it? I think I read somewhere that you shouldn't wash with water...??? I'm very interested to buy something like this as I get a bit older and more fragile. LOL....
Won’t the jacket being that snug on you prohibit the airbag from doing it’s job? I’d think you would want a little more room for air deployment? I can see it being that snug for regular padding, but for an airbag vest not so much. Just an observation.
Hi, Greg. I noticed you bought the Helite not long ago and wonder how you compare it vs. the A-Stars? I've got two Helite Turtles (tether and e-vest), although your set up is appealing because it's hidden.
@@MotoJitsu Makes sense, and congrats on dropping the lbs. The A-Stars def fits you well and I'd love for you to do a follow-up video after you've owned it awhile. I've been looking at adding a second airbag and this is high on the list. Revzilla shows mixed reviews but, like Helite, I like that with A-Stars you can just buy the unit outright and there's no subscription BS. Thanks again.
But you have the Helite E-turtle which covers and protects so much more of the upper body down to lower back and huge amount of airflow too…? I also read that it needs 4cm gap between it and any over garment…
Nice! I looked at some electronic airbag vests but decided to stick with the mechanical Helite for now. Klim infamously offered one that required a subscription. If you missed a payment, then your airbag wouldn't deploy. Does Alpinestars do that, too? Incidentally, do you still have your Helite jacket?
Klim airbag doesn’t require a subscription. You pay $400 for the vest + $400 for the in¬ion stuff. $800 combined, which is about the same as Tech air and Helite. There is an option to subscribe for $120/year instead of $400. If you don’t pay, there is a 30 day grace period and it won’t shut off while you’re riding unless the battery is dead. Beyond that, seems the Klim would be comfortable to wear - stretchy and breathable.
