New Jersey. Despite being the fourth smallest state in the union, it is home to nearly 9 million people. While not having a single city whose city limits contain more than 300,000 people, it is the most densely populated state in the US, even more so than far smaller states like Rhode Island and Delaware. And with much of its land divided between two major urban areas, it still manages to contain some very sparsely populated regions. New Jersey, one of the most diverse states in the US, is the third place I will cover in this 56 part series on every state, territory, and federal district in the United States.

This was great! People who aren’t from NJ seemingly tend not to know how insanely diverse its people and regions are. How many places can you find beaches, mountains, farmland, multiple big cities, sprawling suburbs, expansive wilderness, massive industrial operations, historical sites, recreational areas, and so much more within an hour drive? You did such a great job of showing that NJ can’t be generalized, and I think that’s the thing most people from here have a hard time explaining and wish everyone else could see. NJ has its flaws like any other place, but it you like options and convenience, there’s honestly no place like it. Thank you for the truly informed video.

I think the whole “Jersey is not a desirable place to live” has been a meme before memes were a thing, and has picked up so much steam that it’s reached levels of inaccuracies and given NJ reputation that isn’t true.. It’s hilarious how when the pandemic hit, a lot of folks from NYC began leaving the city and moving to NJ, and now saying how great it is to be away from the city yet still be close enough to commute to work. Which is something folks having been doing for more than 50 years.

We’re 30-1hr away from the beaches, cities, hiking trials, lakes, and tourist destinations. Not to mention, the diversity in north jersey offers so much options in terms of foods, culture, and lifestyles. Again, a lot of people from NYC, both locals and transplants, have realized that NJ does indeed provide several good places to move to.

I grew up in northwest Jersey, in a little town called Hopatcong. Well, a borough. It's in the foothills of the Appalachians so after we moved (to Florida, and I went very reluctantly), I was completely baffled by the response "what exit?" I would get after saying where I was from. There's a decent portion of Jersey that's small towns with forests between, and it's absolutely gorgeous. My town finally got a traffic light a couple of years after we moved (1980) and it's still the only one.

wow, this was a great overview of jersey! this could’ve been well over an hour long since we are a very culturally diverse state tbh. here are some other things about jersey that weren’t covered that i’d like to share: -new jersey is actually more politically divided than people think. there is heavy republican influence in the western 3 counties: warren, sussex and hunterdon as well as ocean, cape may and salem county. the majority of democrats are centered around the major cities. -the wealth divide in the state is most prevalent in essex county, my county :), as in the western half theres millburn(the most affluent town in the country iirc) and livingston, meanwhile newark, east orange and irvington are stricken with poverty and reside in the eastern part of the county. towns like montclair, west orange and verona are almost entirely middle class and are slapped in the middle of the county, and towns like south orange which is basically just rich and poor. -there are legends of bigfoot being seen in sussex county hope I provided some more interesting details :3 proud member of the jersian species lmao ✌️🤟🤜🏼🤛🏼

"John Taylor's Spiced Ham" was the original name and everyone just called it "Taylor Ham". Then Upton Sinclair wrote his little book, “The Jungle" which spurred the creation of the Food & Drug Administration in 1906. The FDA told the John Taylor company that they could not use the word "ham". They were forced to change the name and that's when "Pork Roll" was created. The strong northerners stood up to big brother and their strong arm tactics and to this very day call it "Taylor Ham". The weak southerners bent over and took it. That's the story. Every word is true. (I was eating a TEC (Taylor Ham, Egg & Cheese) as I typed this.) Edit: It was originally "John Taylor's Prepared Ham"

My sister moved to America over 25 years ago with her husband , it was supposed to be for one year while her husband started up a new advertising office for a UK company in New York ..... 27 years later with 3 kids just finishing college and having moved to New Jersey after 5 years in New York they are very happily settled in your state, we have been coming over for Christmas holidays for the past 15 years or so and always have a couple of days in Atlantic City between Christmas and New Year, but unfortunately not this year thanks to Covid.you have a wonderful and varied state with amazing flora and fauna ..... first time I ever saw wild turkeys flying !! Anyway watching this video has given me a greater understanding of your state of New Jersey. Happy New Year Everybody ....... best regards from England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿.

Delawarean here - because of Delaware's small population, the majority of the students at Delaware's biggest university University of Delaware are from another state, many from New Jersey. Because we have so many students from NJ, newcomers to the university often pronounce the Delaware town the university is located in, "Newark," using the pronunciation for the New Jersey city. It kind of serves as a shibboleth for in-state students and out-of-state students, because Delawareans always pronounce the Newark in Delaware as "new-ark."

Regarding the "pork-roll" issue, it is simply that the most popular brand of pork-roll is Taylor. So, a lot call any pork-roll "Taylor Ham". Just like a lot of people call any tissues "Kleen-ex" or any cola "Coke".

South Jersey begins at Trenton. Central Jersey is real, and runs from Trenton to roughly the Watchung Mountains, or perhaps as far north as Morristown. Taylor Pork Roll is the only real pork roll, and it is OK to call it Taylor Ham. It's the Jersey Shore, or just "the Shore" for short. And you don't go TO the Shore, you go DOWN the Shore. Wawa dominates South Jersey, but Quick Chek is more prevalent in Central and North Jersey. Although, Wawa has been making a push into the north recently. Native New Jersians will compare the length of various routes by the time it takes to drive it, not how many miles. If route A is 50 miles and takes 60 minutes to drive, and route B is only 40 miles but takes 70 minutes to drive because there's more traffic lights, then route A is "shorter." And speaking of NJ roads, we like to use the route number, rather than any local names for US, Interstate and NJ state highways... but you have to know which is which. You can take 22 to 287 to 9 to 37 OR 18 to 34 to 35, and you'll still end up in Seaside Heights. The Garden State Parkway is "The Parkway," and the NJ Turnpike is "The Turnpike."

I was born and raised in NJ. I moved to Texas in my early 30s and moved back to NJ 8 years later. I didn’t notice mush difference in the tax burden - NJ has a very high property tax in most areas (especially if your house was built recently), but Texas, along with a couple of other southern states I lived in, tax you in many other ways that NJ doesn’t. NJ taxes may be a bit higher for me because property taxes are higher and houses are more expensive.

You got that right, anonymous. Living in Central Jersey (Monmouth and Middlesex counties) for 25 years now. From the very beginning I felt a distinct cultural and social difference between these counties and areas north of the Raritan river. North of the Raritan river the counties become more densely populated and urban. North Jersey is another state as far as i'm concerened. Central Jersey is mostly suburban and has many rural areas and beautiful towns and villages, not to mention the shore. Less stress and more laid back. Then there is South Jersey, which is way more rural and Philly-oriented with its urban parts. That area is also distinct from Central Jersey.
