In this episode at the Modern Image Layout New Junction, We finally get started with the Long put of Ballasting.
The Railways most notorious task which once finished symbolizes the new era from building phase to the scenic phase.
I've use Woodlands Scenics Fine Grey Blend & Fine Light grey ballast, mixed together at a 50/50 ratio.
That mix was then applied using a Ballast mate and brushed into position.
Once sprayed with an initial layer of water I've used a PVA glue water mix of 50/50 to 60/40 with a few drops of Fairy liquid.

What I like to do to help the ballast be level with the ties but not on top of them, I get an old credit card or gift card and I cut two slots that perfectly fit over the rail. Then I drag it along and it takes the ballast off the top. Many ways to get similar results though. Great video!

Great. vid. That's unlucky about the platforms. I also have paper tops to my platforms and it was all fine when I ballasted the layout. New Junctions looking great at the moment. Keep up the great work.

Hope all the platforms dry up okay. That's been my biggest worry, but have planned all along for them to be removable. Even with sealing with matt varnish, I'm not planning on fixing the platforms down until all the ballast is done and down. Hopefully all yours dry up just fine and they'll look great in the end! The track and ballast itself looks great right now. Iain

Its looking fad, done a really great job, the one thing that scared ke most was ballasting, the last time i tried i forgot to actually glue it and waited a night to vacuum it all up couldnt save any of it as the vacuum was full :/, i do love watching these as it does help :) cheers for sharing

Henery Hoover has to be one of the most used tools that a model railroader uses. so have to make sure it is a good one. great video on all that is involved it track laying and prep work for finishing touches. like ballasting. which has to be everyone's favorite job. something that adds the much needed realism, but I myself can only do small sections at a time, just so tedious of a job. Finished area looks great. This would have been a perfect time for you to do a live stream. watching the glue dry. just kidding of coarse. super job. thanks for the how you do things video. will help out many modelers.

Nice layout! :-) Those ballast boxes are good too. I tried one and attached a small flat brush (a bit like the ones on the bottom of your door) along the front/back of the box, that helps brush the ballast off the sleepers in one motion. Hope the station is all right!!

8:48 That one wonky sleeper will haunt us all for ever XD I've had paper platform edges absorb the glue mix before and it turned out okay once completely dry. Hopefully the colours don't run or stain for you.

It's always crossed my mind with the sheer amount of water needed to ballast and the effect it has on card or paper.. fingers crossed it doesn't go boobs up! I'm planning to use plaster board and that is going to be a pain for zapping up water. May well remove my platforms before ballasting.. I shall see! Looking forward to seeing the hands on weathering - non of this airbrushing lark!
@evansjohn21
@evansjohn21 6 лет назад
I used the plasterboard method for My platforms and didn’t have any problems when I did the ballast , I used the plastic Peco platform edges a la Glebe Road which maybe sealed it a bit

Don`t you just love ballasting. It has to be one of the most painful jobs of all. I try to ballast approx. two metres of track in anyone session, so over a week you will have done about 14 metres, which is a fair amount of ballasting. Good luck and I hope the platforms don`t suffer any water damage.

Amazing video but in your next video while ballasting can you show how you do your points to stop the contacts getting soaked in glue etc. Kind regards LRP
@NewJunction
@NewJunction 6 лет назад
lancashire rail productions the answer is simple for me, just don't glue them, the surrounding ballast will lock it in place.
@lancashirerailproductions
@lancashirerailproductions 6 лет назад
New Junction Thanks that’s actually really helpful! I’m modelling in n gauge and I fouled my points last time I tried to ballast them so how far away from the main centre of the point would you say I should put the glue?
@NewJunction
@NewJunction 6 лет назад
lancashire rail productions In 00 of say just the other side of the rail is fine. If your DCC have power connections either side of the points just incase you get them covered. You could also scrape the glue off once it's dried.
@lancashirerailproductions
@lancashirerailproductions 6 лет назад
New Junction so put the glue in the 4ft between the track?

I saw a vid by Rob McCrain the other day (Farland Howe) and he used some kind of squeezy bottle instead of a syringe. Looked like a very fast (and accurate) way to add the glue mix. For some stupid reason I can't post the link so check out "24B advancing Farland with th magic glue bottle".

I really have to be in the mood to ballast. I prefer to use a pva bottle for the mixed glue. I sometimes pushed too much or not enough mix out with the syringe. Paper never gets along with liquid.

Cover the working parts in masking tape and don't ballast or glue near them. once painted you wont notice the gaps

Oh ho! that's really unfortunate. A common School boy error with card kits/printed paper and PVA, did it myself once!. Could you not have removed the platforms after ballasting but before adding glue? That's what I did. We await and see if all will be fine ;-( Cheers. Dave
