In this video we talk about the differences between the kodak ektar h35 and the h35n! I've loved using it's previous model, but once I got this one in my hands I knew I needed to test it against it's younger brother!
These videos take a lot of time and effort, so I'd appreciate if you considered subscribing! Thank you for watching :)

The picture at 4:26 was by far my favorite shot, it’s funny how many great pieces are made by completely accident. Might have to go out of my way and get this camera to experiment with the double exposure mode.

Back in the olden days (like 40+ years ago) multiple exposure photography was a serious part of the art-form. We used to hand-cut lens masks in order to shoot superimposed images that looked like what you might see when matte painting was used in motion pictures. I honestly don't understand the inclusion of a star filter, when an ND or UV filter is far more useful. Especially since a star filter is easy to make with a bit of clear plastic and a Brillo pad.
@thebitterfig9903
@thebitterfig9903 5 месяцев назад
A thought came across my mind: each color of the camera could have had a different filter. Star as one option, a diffusion filter for blooming highlights, an ND filter, a mild yellow filter for B&W contrast, and a dark red filter. A few fun creative effects, a utility ND, and a pair of contrast filters for black and white. Now you can sell someone three or four cameras.

I have the older version, and something to know, is that I had such a hard time finding someone to develop half frame film. I am a beginner, and fujifilm does not develop half frame. Most places who develop half frame seem to charge more than for full frame. Also, I live in Canada and couldn't find anyone here to do it, so I send mine to Photovision. SO all this to say, it has become very costly: film cost, upcharge on half frame developing, USD to CAD conversion, and cost to ship internationally.

the developing is the same for full and half frame, no? the scanning is the issue
@Anjroo
@Anjroo 3 месяца назад
That is very surprising, It’s the same EXACT process to develop half frame, scanning is the same too, they could just scan two images on one (then you could crop them yourself) It’s pretty disappointing to hear that they’re upcharging you for something that is the same amount of work😱 Sorry that’s been your experience!! For my local lab it’s the usual price ☹️
@rudolfnavaro
@rudolfnavaro 3 месяца назад
@@Anjroo i think the extra charge/fee comes in the form of individually scanning it instead of diptych, so instead of 36 scans it's 72 scans. heard that some labs in my area charge the same for diptych scans (i.e. one frame is two images, crop it yourself) but charge a little more if you want each image individually scanned
@pd1jdw630

Developing is not so hard. Getting it scanned good is another thing.

Wait so before hand the ektar h35 took portrait pictures when held normally? And now the h35n takes landscape ones when held normally and portrait when rotated on its side?
@Anjroo
@Anjroo 5 месяцев назад
They both still are portrait while held normally, but on the h35n just the viewfinder is flipped, so it’s a tiny bit bigger and easier to compose. Before it had a cheap mask blocking off parts of the viewfinder

Thank you for this content. Very informative as I am looking into buying this soon. I do have a question. Forgive me for being dumb asking this lol. How did you manage to upload your shots in the video? sorry i know these are films and needs to be developed? just wondered how you were able to show us the image results as samples in your vid. did you take pics of them developed photos or are there any shops who can develop these bits and give us digital copies as well? appreciate it

thanks for your video) i’m from ukraine and in our country this camera kinda VERY overpriced (65 vs 89 bucks, it’s cost almost like instax), but i was lucky to buy more advanced cameras cheaper so decided why not? double the frames on party or travel could be useful for fun memories) today i finally got mine, already shoot one mini film roll)

I'm really curious about getting this camera... I've never shoot in film, and I really want to give it a try. However, I'm a shaky-hand person; I usually have my shutter speed at like 250 to compensate for this. Should I still give it a try, or is it a bad investment since I will ruin them all?
@1marcelfilms
@1marcelfilms 3 месяца назад
This camere would be perfect if it had 2 or 3 shutter speeds. like 1/30 1/100 and 1/200 then it would be more usabl

I completely agree, I really dislike how most point and shoots can only manage 1/100, I’d love it to be just a touch faster since I’ve had a handful of shots ruined by shake 😭

I’m probably gonna go with that one (and it looks cool) but the whole reason I even looked at these cameras was that original green one with the textured front. It just looks so much more of an age. I wish they’d make adirect upgrade cause I really just like investing in glass…even if its mostly psychological. Just makes it feel more like a “real” camera. And those new functions ARE cool.
@sesa2984
@sesa2984 5 месяцев назад
Since I didn’t already have one, I think it’d be dumb not to take advantage of the upgrades. Especially since the plastic lens was oroginally the only thing holding me back.

they dont have timer feature?
@Anjroo

Unfortunately no! Timers are a pretty advanced feature, and these cameras are definitely more simple and cheap
@kmoecub
@kmoecub 6 месяцев назад
Bulb setting + a stopwatch = timer.
@kmoecub
@kmoecub 6 месяцев назад
@@Anjroo Timers are not advanced at all. The simplest is just a small clockwork that is quite inexpensive to make. I have cameras from the 1890's that have timer settings for the shutter.
@thebitterfig9903
@thebitterfig9903 5 месяцев назад
@@kmoecub Depends what you mean by timer. The old T setting was basically a bulb mode that stayed open without being held until used again. This is probably not too complicated, but it’s also not the most necessary, since holding the shutter in bulb isn’t hard, and modern films are fast enough that you probably aren’t doing multiple minute exposures. A self-timer which waits 10 seconds before taking the shot is not a simple feature. It probably doesn’t need to be too accurate, unlike shutter speeds, but it would require a significant step up in complexity, and one unlikely in a plastic fantastic like the Reto Kodak cameras.

If they made the film rewind a little more robust as well as updating the lens and adding bulb mode, I would consider buying it. If the rewind is still flimsy, I don’t know if those other updates are really worth it. I’m perfectly happy with my old version.
@Poorgeniu5

For around the same price, you could get an Olympus Pen (not the digital ones) but as an owner of one of these, the lack of flash kinda limits what it can do indoors unless you got an external flash.
@sesa2984
@sesa2984 5 месяцев назад
I feel like this sits in a sweet spot for me (especially because of the high numver of shootable frames) between using a boring old phone camera and getting a camera that is more work than I honestly need. I like the quick point and click ability, but I get a little bit of control to do fun stuff beyond that. I LOVE the idea of photography and spent a sememster in a dark room in college, but I’m just looking to capture memories ina way that is comforting and connects me to the world of my youth. So I think I don’t need to be focusing and worrying about light etc. Thanks for doing these.

This is so helpful! Made a mistake of ordering the H35, and now rethinking if I should return and replace to H35N. Upgrades are indeed great particularly the glass lens, but the photo quality difference between the two is still minor and I’m just enticed with the nostalgic vibes of the film pictures. I have no interest in learning photography, star filter is not that remarkable, plus that sticky flexible thing is not even included, so thanks for clearing that! If I would’ve researched better, I’ll pick the H35N. But it’s not worth the hassle of returning, this H35 will do 😄
