My cub has safety cables on the landing gear- suppose to keep the prop out of the dirt if the gear fails. Could save a costly tear down. Also my gear has a secondary "strut" running front to back on the gear stiffening up the whole structure. A sharp builder could study the geometry and identify weak points. Exciting build- I can see you do very good work!

Would highly recommend checking those 3/8" pivot bolts after a few flights or a hard landing for any evidence of bending in the bolt. It's unlikely to fail suddenly so probably not worth a redesign. Would definitely keep an eye on it though. In a different context, but a very similar load case and pivot design (as shown at 11:00), I found the bolt would suffer a bending failure after a surprisingly low number of cycles. Love the project, keep the updates coming!

I’m interested to see this gear design work. I’d mentally designed pretty much the same idea for the rockhopper but hadn’t committed to it just yet. I may “future proof” that area of the fuse so I can run a traditional cub style gear or clean it up later.
@DC_DC_DC_DC
@DC_DC_DC_DC 4 года назад
Jonas, already thought this with the previous video. Why don't you use a slightly thicker polycarbonate windscreen, bent in a good U shape, as an integral part of the construction. It would require a bit of engineering on the attachment/mating surfaces of the frame, but it would be even stronger than what you have now and you'd have no visual blocking.

Jonas, Just catching up on this. Put some bump rubbers in the shocks to control the overall travel and to make the spring rate progressive. We use them on the race cars all the time. They make them in different densities to control the squish.
@JonasMarcinko
@JonasMarcinko 3 года назад
Excellent. I was thinking they make something like that. You have store recommendation?
@jwonder3353
@jwonder3353 3 года назад
@@JonasMarcinko I like Penske bump rubbers even though they are a bit more expensive. They have a nice graph of force to displacement on their website. You can figure out the amount of weight that will be placed on the bump rubbers from the (weight on the two wheels) / 2 * ratio of your rocker arm suspension. In the case of a hard landing these should protect your gear, shock mounts and shocks from being destroyed. You can cut them and play with the length of them to get them 100% right for your use. They also have shims they make that you can slip in below them to change the overall length. I think it would make a difference, but I am much more of a car person. www.penskeshocks.com/product/bump-rubber/

Butt welding pipes together is very weak in shear loading. The rear bar of the gear leg needs some sort of gusset near the rear mount to bridge that butt weld or tie the front and back bars together near the hinges. Overall looks great! Giving me ideas for future build.

I forgot to ask if you plan to add any bracing to the lower gear to account for any side loads and prevent buckling the gear? Depending on how you tie it in it could help reduce and/or eliminate the bending at the hinge line at the forward gear tube.

Will you be putting the coils back on the shocks? With those, the springs are what take the load and the shock just really keeps the spring from being, well, springy. I come from the automotive racing world and only dabble in aviation, but I would say the coilover setup would be the best to prevent a roll over and be able to handle any off airport work. Love the build, definitely got me thinking about building and stepping outside of the comfort of my C172!

Turbo Tastic based on all of Mike's videos I've seen plus those of others, where they may have featured a clip of them helping, I would be of the humble opinion that Mike does most of the work himself with a little help from his friends when two hands ain't enough.
@Turbo_Tastic
@Turbo_Tastic 4 года назад
@@f2air You may be right, he enjoys doing the work, but setting up cameras to film is usually more work than the work itself, and I'm pretty sure he has a full time hired help camera man. Still impressive what they all do, just got tired of watching Mike Patey, if you throw enough money at things you can build anything; he bought his wife a $200,000+ plane for her birthday, so that explains a lot too. What isn't explained is how he ran a 200+ deck building company when in high school.. he must have walked into a lucky deal, I don't know anyone that needs that many decks, even for a team of 2, finding people that need decks would be difficult.
@f2air

@Turbo_Tastic
@Turbo_Tastic 4 года назад
@@f2air but you'll accuse me begrudging them? I'm just saying they don't seem particularly bright, he's no Tony Stark.. anyone that builds a 6 wheeled Jeep is not a person that I would rank high up the totem pole of intelligence. Everyone starts with $0, it is called childbirth. Then people fall into big contracts, just like Gary Johnson starting his handyman company.. with a huge government contract (stolen money, taxes are theft). So who helped them, they got zero help you are saying? They had $0, so they were orphans on the street, since childbirth? that's $0. I would love to hear the whole story, if you have a link to details and facts.
