Where I Live we call them "wish paths".

They can form anywhere from apparently forgotten corners of cities to the grounds of national governments, as has happened around the National Congress of Brazil; some are so well established that they are visible on Google Maps." Hear, hear! After returning to the hobby, Everard Junction vids were a Godsend, so many tips and how tos, my layout is no where near the same standard, but the tuition and learning from my mistakes, my layout is coming along nicely now.
