I would be in that crowd of 4runner faithful. "Just say NO" to flip up glass! KEEP THE POWERED WINDOW AND FLAT OPEN CARGO SPACE! Might as well add that smaller engines + turbos means more/quicker wear and tear and heat (guess only time will tell?)
Just like Toyota did with the new Land Cruiser - they eliminated the clamshell / tail gate rear hatch. That was one of my favorite features on my 99 Land Cruiser.
A neighbor just traded his very clean 12 year old Taco for... a new Nissan Frontier "V6" (they are all V6). Certain that Toyota saw this as a calculated risk... time will tell. (I drive a 2013 Accord V6.)
I will be so blown away if this is a manual shifting removable top beach cruiser. It’s hard to imagine how else they will separate it from the Land Cruiser
My interpretation of this is the LC is now what 4R used to be and the new 4R will be more FJcruiser and going to compete directly with the Wrangler and Bronco. Hopefully we even see a coupe version of the 4 runner!
One of the main reason I bought my 4Runner was to have that famous Toyota V6 engine. Its supposedly bullet proof. I know the EPA is forcing these smaller engines on us, but F them...I want my V6. I don't trust all this turbo-ing of small engines to power these big vehicles.
A 4 banger in a mid-sized suv is ridiculous. The epa is on some bullshit. What makes this hurt so much is i actually work for Toyota, i build the Corolla here in Mississippi. I want a Taco/4Runner but without the V6 its just insulting.
Is "18-inch wheels only" for Tacoma confirmed? I really hope not because even the Tundra iForce Max can take most 17" wheels. I did it on the TRD Pro and the caliper cleared 17" wheel with balancing weights.
I’m just basing it off OEM wheels but from what I’ve seen, they aren’t shipping with 17s. I believe there are 3 brake package levels, with the TRD trims having the largest. Toyota reaaaaally needs to release some concrete details on these trucks. Launch of the 24s sure is close!
@@IndependenceOverland I know...let's hope 17s will fit. same as the tundras the smallest wheels are also 18s. maybe they have some road handling requirements they want to meet. Tires with 18" wheels will have higher roll stiffness. Probably hard to tell the difference by humans, but measurable by sensors and computers.
Might have to swing the finances and get a 2024. The old 4.0 V6 is tried and true, very low maintenance and good for 500K of hard use. Then in another 15-20 years allow myself to be forced into the fancy turbos/hybrids, but for now I want simple and less things to go wrong when I am off the paved roads.
As a guy who came of age in the 80s, I'd be tickled to see a throwback to the original with the removeable top. The new landcruiser is well positioned to be the new overlanding platform of choice for Toyota fans.
This would be an ideal time for Toyota to revive the FJ as a 2-door "2+2" short wheelbase version of the new 4Runner / Tacoma platform to compete with 2-door Wrangler and Bronco. All the hardware needed has been developed and there is a loyal fanbase waiting!
Wait until year three of the new design. Hopefully by that time the bugs will be worked and there will be some more data on the engine/turbo reliability.
the more I read and watch about the gen 6 4runner, the more I think about keeping my 2018 limited. Made the front looking like trd pro with the raptor lights, trd pro wheels and ko2s.
So just how will this turbo engine last after 200,000 , or 300,000 Km’s? That’s a lot of extra parts under the hood for very little gain, and bigger repair bills down the road! If you don’t believe that, you’re ignoring reality.
I know the Land Cruiser was leading in your pole, but a 6 speed manual has got to capture some attention. I was considering trading my 2012 Tundra for a Tacoma... but I'm serious rethinking this now. Need to see more to know for sure.
Before the 2023 SEMA Auto Show in Vegas, everyone and their mothers agreed w \ Toyota's engineer about no more V6 in the 2024 Toyota Tacoma. Everyone and their mothers still believed him about no more V6 in the 2024 Toyota Tacoma. Everyone and their mothers parrot the words of Toyota's engineer about no more V6 in the 2024 Toyota Tacoma. Now, Toyota brought out the 2024 Toyota Tacoma X Runner Concept at the 2023 SEMA Auto Show in Vegas but, the same engineer said, " We putted a V6 Toyota Tundra's engine in the 2024 Toyota Tacoma. Toyota brought out the 2024 Toyota Tacoma X Runner Concept at the 2023 LA Auto Show.
I think the removable top is such a bad idea. Probably wouldn’t look great and it’s just copying. I really wish they would offer a full time system on all 4x4 trims though. As it is you have to go limited trim and that is a pretty compromised trim
The writing on the wall was obvious that the naturally aspirated V6 and V8 options would be gone. Personally I'm happy about a 4-banger turbo hybrid. The turbo and EV power combine to produce LOTS of low-end torque, which for off-road and launching is great! Wonder if a Limited edition will have full time FWD? Electric sliding rear window is truly one of the best things I love about my Gen 3! Hope it doesn't go away.
It's a funny line to draw, but I've been holding off for years for a next-gen 4runner but if they ditch the rear window, I'm done lol. I'll buy the nicest used 5th gen TRD Pro I can find and call it a life lol.
Nevermind the new 4Runner (I have an FJ), let’s talk about that light up coaster thingy! If I’m gonna buy a pint glass, I’m going to first need to know when you got that! 😂 Seriously tho, great video. The hubs and I really love your channel!
Haha thanks for your comment! I actually just had a really bright video light behind it, but since you mentioned it I found some with good reviews for you! I should probably use some of these videos, now that you mention it! Thanks for tuning in! 🙏 amzn.to/470xNPT
I've only driven a 4Runner since '03, three total over 20 years. Current is a '15 TRD Pro I bought new. I will obviously be interested when these finally come out, but I am very content and happy with my current ride. It being paid off is a big factor. Other than the hybrid turbo-4 setup the other turbo-4 banger options on paper look disappointing.
I miss my 2011 4Runner. When I sold it (for a '22 Pro 4X), I thought I'd get a new 4Runner only if it checked a few boxes. A manual tranny is definitely up there for me. I miss th roll down back glass. I don't care what people say, I want a small block with a great fuel economy. I mean, this is the mid 20s, ffs! Give me reliabililty (we'll only know in 2035...) and looks and I'm sold!
I bought a 2023 4Runner trd orp last week. I did this specifically to get the 4.0 V6 before it was retired. Probably my biggest purchase driver. That said, if the new one has a removable top I would immediately trade this one in and take the financial hit. That would suck though lol
The funniest part of the video that made me bust out, laughing was when he said Toyota makes reliable, hybrids boy. I work on a lot Toyota hybrids all the time I don’t find them that reliable and it’s expensive to repair.
The sell a lot of 4runners to soccer moms. Now they will be buying the land cruiser. I would think if toyota was smart they'd go after the bronco and wrangler.
I still have my 1997 Toyota 4Runner Limited I bought new. I might be time to get a new one. I have loved my car for many years and it was super reliable. If you are going to buy a 4Runner I would think you would want a 4 wheel drive. If you want an SUV then others can get one with a smoother ride. The 4Runner will always have that truck kind of feel. That is why it is good going off road. I would love to see a hybrid 4Runner.
I want to like the hybrid engines just don’t trust them. I think I am going with the new Lexus GX that they kept the 6 cyl Twin Turbo. I with they would give a natural engine option and not only the hybrid.
If the 4Runner is virtually the same, the Land Cruiser just seems so similar. Why would anyone buy one over the other? Just the center locker can't be it. Especially with Bronco, the removable doors and top (but reliabile would be a winner). Looking forward to whatever happens.
The renderings of the new 4runner look great. As a 4wd Trail edition owner, I’m disappointed that the V6 will be gone. I’ll probably just keep what I got. I’m thinking a used low mileage’23 or older would be the way to go when my 4runner wears out.
Loved your video. Can you recommend a few companies that sell aftermarket kits and accessories for the 4Runner? Maybe you've done some videos on 4Runner accessories? Thanks!
I like the fact the turbo/hybrid system will increase MPG, I am also jazzed at the possibility of a Manual 4Runner again. I really hope it keeps the roll down rear window and production in Japan. I’m still on my local dealership’s Pro lottery for the Terra ‘24
@@phroskies Yep would love to see the MPG increase, but I don't think it will. Looking at all of the 2024 Tacoma videos the MPG is displayed as is the tank miles and it barely looks like 300-325 mile tanks. However, those are pre-production, but I doubt they are doing extra work to configure that. The Tundra is such a good example of how it didn't deliver on expectations.
@@dirtdiver9668 Oh yea it would, but I am hoping it will get better. My Colorado ZR2 diesel gets 590-650 miles on a tank (21 gallons) which means I need the 2024 Tacoma to get close to that as much as possible. I just don't think it will, judging by some of the early numbers. Remaining possible though because the TRD Pro looks great!
Sounds promising. The kids are growing up, the 2005 Odessey has 225,000 miles on it and my wife is itching to get a 4-Runner again. If Toyota is listening; No hybrid, a manual transmission and lo-tech.
Having been a 3rd and 5th gen owner, i can say the gas mileage has been the worse part of the model. I feel that either a more fuel efficient gas or diesel power train had to happen (long over due) or the hybrid. I for one am super excited for the turbo hybrid if the MPG are going from 14-15 to possibly 30...WIN!
Keep dreaming - they released the EPA ratings for the Tacoma with the 2.4 and they are lower than you’d expect. Only around 19-23. Still better but my 2020 Silverado did that with a V8 lol. Sorry, still sticking with my 4.0l 5th gen.. wouldn’t trade it for anything.
Nice that Toyota has finally decided to reboot the 4Runner, only about 10 years too late and too late for me, since I already have a AWD Passport. The new front end of the 4Runner looks horrible, maybe it will grow on people. But the biggest negative I see, is gonna be the price, I'd be surprise if a fully loaded one is under $70k...!
I really want the new Tacoma but I simply can’t get past the whole turbo 4 cylinder and hybrid. Luckily I bought a 2022 Tacoma V6 so I can wait a few years and see how they do and try and talk myself into accepting it lol
I’ll keep my 2016 trail edition with the 2nd shifter for the 4x4 function with locking rear diff and crawl mode. The 4 liter V6 is bullet proof engine because of its simplicity. A Lexus/toyota mechanic said that he worked worked at the dealership for 25 years and he had never had to open this engine because nothing ever goes wrong because it’s so simple. Just like the old V8 Land Cruisers they are built to last. I heard that the current 4Runners are made at a Lexus plant alongside the GX. I also trust NA vehicles more the boosted ones especially with suv/off road vehicles. Recently met a guy that traded his older Tundra for a new one and he said that it was a big mistake.
Timing chains are very common repairs on the 1gr-fe in the 4Runners. The Fj has the same engine. They are also known to develop oil leaks. They are reliable though. The 4Runner is in fact built in the Tahara factory next to the GX and Land Cruiser 200. It’s regarded as Toyotas best facility. That being said, the new 4Runner will be built there as well most likely. So it will still be a quality vehicle, and people seem to forget that even though the US/Mexico trucks aren’t built in Japan, the engines are. I think these new ones will be just fine myself.
I had an 07 FJ cruiser, 15 4 Runner and a 22TRD sport 4 runner which I traded in on my 22 ford bronco. My biggest complaint on the Toyotas was the rust on the under carriage! I actually had to replace the calipers on my 07 FJ because of the rust, first time ever on any vehicle I’ve owned! I had my 15 4 runner undercoated, but still didn’t help. Very questionable where they buy their steel from. We also had a 2014 Tacoma in the family that needed the frame replaced with only 50k on it.
Yes, they have redesigned the CV axles to put up with high angle torque. This is with the Pro and Trailhunter variants, but the chief engineer said they cross right over.
Around early 2025 I am likely to buy a Tacoma or Ranger. Leaning towards the Tacoma with manual trans -- obviously have not yet driven a new Tacoma. If the 4Runner offers the manual I could go that way -- not 100% sure about SUV or pickup, but I want a body-on-frame mid sized off-road capable vehicle. I would prefer non-turbo but that's how it goes now. I would not buy a hybrid because whatever I buy I plan to keep for many years.
Time will tell on hybrid reliability, but based off the 1997 Prius models that are still kicking, we dont have much to worry about. And the batteries are built so parts of the battery can fail, and parts can be replaced. At least thats what a Toyota rep told me.
@@IndependenceOverland Good points. I know a few buddies who have high mileage Priuses. They have some quality issues (body, catalytic converters going bad) but they're all fixable. I'll hope Toyota follows the Prius in making the batteries easily replaceable. Again, that's what a friend of mine did with his Prius.
Toyota does not use lithium in their batteries which I think keeps their cost down but also increases dependability. I don’t like the 3” of lost vertical space in the LC load area due to the hybrid battery and guessing the same will be the case with the 6gen 4R.
@@van_mod1 When I watched the interview w/ Chief Engineer, Mike Sweers, he said the deciding factor between nickel metal hydride vs lithium is usually packaging (Thus why the new Prius has a lithium ion battery- it’s a small car ). There are other benefits/ cons for each, but I believe that is the main deciding factor (based on that I think they should reconsider a lithium battery for Sequoia, or move the battery underneath, it’s too obtrusive). I think the elephant in the room is these lithium ion batteries are having problems catching fire. A parking garage in UK (Luton) partially collapsed because of a fire started by hybrid Land Rover w/ a lithium Ion Battery (it burnt through the floor). I haven’t heard of Toyota having a problem, but they’ve been using nickel metal hydride much longer. Not sure what the fix is for lithium ion, but it is a problem (vehicles that spontaneously combust tends to be a bad thing lol).
Yeah…So the out going 4Runner will have: Less Horsepower… Less Torque………… Less gas mileage!!! FOR-the out going 4Runner!!! Yeah, That makes all the sense in the world to hold on to your old 2022 forerunner!
I hope there's a 6 speed option on the new 4Runner, I'd trade my '17 Taco 6 speed for a 4Runner. I've already got a Tundra so I don't need two trucks, this would be a nice daily driver/ off road beast.
Those aren’t leaks.. that’s the same renders some sites had been showing for months. Somebody photoshopped mixing a Sequoia with a Tacoma grill. If the wiper is on the back window, Toyota is fn up. And Toyota won’t eff up.
I need help on my 2007 Voodoo Blue FJ Cruiser. My Frame is shot to hell. Bought with the frame full of rust not even worrying about it because I lived in Florida all my life. Any recommendations on frame swapping and who to go to?
I am very happy with my 2021 4Runner and quite content with all the "old school" tech that is has. The way I care for my 4Runner it should last my for 25 years. By then I probably wont be doing much driving.
Some bullshit, wish they would find a way to develop a better transmission to displace a bit more power and better mpg. Disappointing all around. The only solid vehicle that will be left would be the nissian frontier.
The thing I don't understand is even with the new motors I force / I force max, Toyota Tacoma and I guess the 4Runner is still behind the competition in power and torque. Seriously Toyota! Hell, even the 56 year old motor in the Nissan Frontier produces more HP... and apparently the MPG didn't really improve over the outgoing V6. WT actual F?
The 2024 is exactly the same as the 2023. Zero changes. I have the 2024 trd pro in the exclusive terra color. Only difference from the 2018 is andriod atuo larger screen and safety crap.
I wonder why all of the YT reviewers never say the fact that all 4 Runner fans got screwed. The Land Cruiser is what the 6Gen 4 Runner prado based was supposed to be. Look at it and you will see that it has all the same features and it’s put together like the 5 gen. Toyota decided to cash in slap a LC plate and make more money. Now in its place we will get a cheaper Tacoma based vehicle. Cheaper yes, compare the weight of a door on a 4 Runner vs a Tacoma and you will see. Please let’s start with that.
I disagree with some of this. In order to make a major difference between the LC J250 and the 4Runner, I think the 4Runner is going to have extremely short approach and departure angles and removable doors. They’re going to target Bronco / Wrangler with it, and people who want something similar to their 5th gen 4Runner can have a LC J250. ALSO the new smaller Land Cruiser FJ is going to compete directly with Bronco Sport and Cherokee / Compass / Renegade, as Toyota’s affordable and efficient off roader. That’ll allow RAV4 to compete against CR-V and Mazda CX-5. And other crossovers
