I won't be picking up any of these...but I definitely want to. In a different life where I work in an office with a desk, I'd love to have that R2 and 3PO. But instead, I work in a tiny studio with LEGO coming out my ears.....the ultimate first world problem.
The pearl gold definitely worries me about the longevity of the set. Pearl gold while not as bad as it used to be, still cracks and breaks more than the average Lego piece.
The 501st mascot is actually R2-KT. QT-KT was part of D-squad in Season 5 of The Clone Wars. She was originally going to be R2-KT, but the writers decided it wasn't a good idea to have two characters both called Artoo, so they changed her to a different droid. When the buildable C-3PO was first rumored, I wasn't sure if it would turn out well. Seeing it now, I am seriously impressed! I think young Leia actually is pretty relevant to this set, simply because she comes with Lola, who is a fitting inclusion in a set dedicated to droids.
8:21 This is my main complaint with a lot of custom minifigures I see online. It’s very rare for them to get the facial proportions just right like Lego does it. Even different designs from the same company have varying degrees of success. Most of the time they’re just off & it completely throws off the look of the whole figure. I saw so many custom Moon Knight minifigures out there & Lego were the only ones to get the design perfect. I will say though, C-3PO definitely looks a lot better than Chewie, his still freak me out 10 months later.
I think the drum laquered finish is the complete wrong texture for C-3PO and the pearl gold works far better. The drum laquered gold bricks have a very matte finish, however the silver ones appear much shinier and work very well for his one leg
If I can somehow afford it and find on sale, definitely need the matching R2-D2 and C-3PO together! The creative droids set is so cool, weird, fun, unique!!! WANT!!! But at half the price AT MOST. Still waiting on Nien Nunb set...... it's killing me!!
A good review, and I understand what you're saying about 3PO's eyes, from a certain point of view. But really I think you've missed the point. True they could have more accurately replicated the real droid's face, but look at the expression on the Lego droid. Real 3P0 is full of worry and alarm and consternation. Lego 3PO's eye bring that personality to him at first sight. Anyone who enters a room and gets a first glimpse of Legp 3PO will instantly hear real 3PO's voice in their mind. "I've had just about enough of you." "Curse my metal body, I wasn't fast enough!" "Sir, the possibility of successfully navigating an asteroid field are..." That all comes through Lego 3PO's eyes in a instant. It's eye give it personality. A Lego 3PO with eye closely resembing real 3PO would be completely lifeless, and a creepy at best.
Yup too big! Checking photos online and comparing the eyes are almost twice the size they should be. An acceptable alternative would have been part # 38799 (barbell / saucer) in pearl gold with the 1x1 trans yellow stud.
I WANT to like that droids set... But man, those shoulders on them really are absurd. I'm hoping it looks fine to leave those pieces off entirely - maybe I am taking the design too seriously, but they absolutely ruin the appearance IMO. That set does fix the problem I had with the other R2-D2 set, which was the over-reliance on printed parts. Even if you have to rebuild the legs to make them look good, these new ones can at least be built in many different color schemes, so you can build any droid you want. I like that. I'm just not sold on the wonky legs, and the extra inclusions for dressing them up (I understand it's fun for the kids, I just personally don't like spending extra on things I know I don't want to display). At least the extra stuff can go in my parts bins I guess, there seem to be fairly interesting parts in the accessories.
Speaking of Eyes on Lego Big Characters, i remember hating the Mighty Bowser when it got revealed because in one of the "trailers" they made both of his eyes point very straight, and i was affraid they had this postition fixed. Im really glad i got this set for christmas a year ago because not only its my biggest set, but also building it and realizing that his face can be much more expressive made me love it (and bleed from my nose??)
You definitely get the feeling he wants to slag off the set more, but still wants to be invited to Lego events and so has to simper a bit and try to not offend..
I never get the problems with the eyes, look great in my opinion, none the less I just wanted to say that in my opinion The Mighty Bowser would have been an amazing example of perfect execution:)
i disagree on the eyes of 3PO, i think they look fine. i honestly dont see anything wrong with the statue at all from the pictures. not like i did with Chewwy from the moment i saw his pics for the first time. Simba is great aswell. his Eyes are fine for the context hes put in. just my 2 cents
