Comment down below and let me know your HONEST thoughts, if you think I am crazy let me know.
HOWEVER, I know this video is a little long but I think if you hear me out through the video you may see where I am coming from :)
I initially thought like most people that these new road plates weren't going to be good then as a I looked at them more and the price I thought more about the pros of these. Then decided to get the road plates myself to get an idea of them on hand. I am surprisingly happy with them and they are not bad at all! Just need some improvements which I am sure we will see overtime from LEGO.
Thank you guys for watching!!

The problem I have is the modulars in my city sit on base plates. These new roads are a lot higher than the baseplate. So in order to integrate these new roads I need to somehow lift each modular to be the same hight with the new roads otherwise I have roads that are higher than the sidewalks on the modulars. I’m wondering if they are going to start changing the new modulars to be higher and match the new roads. All I see is a disaster coming to those who have cities already built. So as much as the new roads are more customizable and come with accessories, this is all great, the problem remains how to integrate with existing cities and I think this is where the problem with the new roads are for many people who have cities.
@MONINOW
@MONINOW 3 года назад
I agree 100% with that. If you have exhisting cities these would be a ROYAL pain. I think the traditional road plates work really good for large LEGO cities with Modulars. I think the new road plates work better with the actually LEGO city line that they are made for and that is something I should have address in the video. I also see what you are saying where it is taller than the actual modular which was a poor design. If I had a large existing city - I would stick to the old ones out of pure convenience.

MILS plates are the only way to go for the modulars anyway which raises your building above the new road plate, which you can make wider also. A building on a flimsy baseplate is an accident waiting to happen. I built my new roads onto a mils plate system and now they quick connect to my modulars no problem and I can pick up my modular building with one hand no worries.
@koloth5139
@koloth5139 3 года назад
@@davidseter1780 I think these new roads make MILS plates much more appealing. It is kind of expensive to build out roads with all those bricks or tiles. This provides a cheaper alternative.

I personally absolutely love these new road plates. In my opinion, the only downside is not having a curved plate. I have seen some videos of really nice mocs of people making them corner. Great video by the way! Keep up the awesome work.

Yes, I’ve done it to my current city build. I put two plates side by side and just added the white divider piece in the center. So, one road plate is one side of the road. Wish I could upload a pic in the comments…

The new roads are very useful, but I just don’t think they look that good, especially with how much the 2x4 tiles stand out. The new roadplates are also very expensive. One set of the new roadplates is double the cost of the old ones, and it covers less area. The roadplates also make the new city set quite overpriced. I’ll definitely stick to the old roadplates, though I would like to use custom MILS roads

Nice video 👍! There are good and bad things about both road plates! The good thing about the new plates is that you can attach things to the bottom so that you can make a road that slopes up! It's also great that it comes with some accessories! The bad thing about them is that it's harder to connect them with modular buildings and there's less space for cars to drive through! I think it would've been better if Lego would sell both road plates so that people could choose which ones they wanted to get!

@oneguyonascooter9278
@oneguyonascooter9278 3 года назад
I respect your opinion, and I do like the aesthetic, accessories, and customization for the new ones. The only turn off for me is the sidewalks- I made a city with a lot of Lego City and Creator sets, and like you said it's a lot easier to just connect and align buildings with the large plates. Also, I would see plates that were "unwanted" (since I do agree it's a little unfair that if you want one particular plate you have to get another type with it too) as other functions in the city, like T-junctions as entrances to fire and police stations, crossroads like helipads, and curved plates as a separate racetrack. I think the new ones are a great new direction and have potential, but like you said in the conclusion it's not the greatest for someone who already has a city based around a lot of old road plates. Great video!

You definitely covered the good and the bad. I certainly would not want to try and implement this new road system if I had a large or even small city set up. These new road sets sure have a lot of flexibility. Jangbricks did a video showing a lot of possibilities with this new system. You just need to open your mind and let out that creative animal. Think outside the box. I think the possibilities are endless with what you can do with this new road system. I saw a video, just can't think who it was, that MOC'd a curve with this new system. Maybe in the future Lego will come out with a curve road set to compliment the current set.
@MONINOW
@MONINOW 3 года назад
I appreciate that comment John, each of them really do have their pros and their cons and like you said its all about letting out that creativeness and seeing how it could work. I think for large LEGO cities the bigger baseplates make the task easier but I think you can also get mroe creative with the newer ones. We shall see what LEGO comes out with in the future with these to help support the change. Ill have to go watch Janbricks' video - I appreciate you recommending that

Agreed!! Im old school and nostalgic for old Lego stuff, but im 100 % thinking the new roads are so much better. People that dont want to add them to their Lego city dont need to. There are enough second hand road plates around. And they are dirt cheap at the moment. The new roads are prettier and more customizable and feel like Lego roads. I also think they fit better with a lego train tracks than the old road base plates. Great video again!
@MONINOW

The problem is not the new road plates. But that LEGO is stopping production of the old ones. So now you have no choice. You buy used ones, squeeze the new ones into your city that were previously built on the old ones. Or you resort to competing products. LEGO doesn't give you a choice anymore. That's the problem.

@SalixScape
@SalixScape 3 года назад
I fully agree with your thoughts, but I already have a collection of the road plates, so I didn't wanna make more costs by swapping them out. Also fun fact, in the age of green road plates which was roughly 2002-2005 if I remember correctly, some sets did come with those road plates, the set that springs to mind is # 6464 which I own personally. Additionally there have been sets in the past that use there own custom road/base plates, e.g. the Fire Station from 2007, # 7945, and the Service Station from the same year, # 7993. Back in the 90s and decades before that there were many sets with such custom road/base plates. Usually police stations, fire stations and such.
@MONINOW
@MONINOW 3 года назад
Thats a good point - I remember when a lot of them used to come with their own custom road plates! - I feel like that has been so long since we have gotten those, they used to build so many of those sets to fit with them. I wonder why they stopped doing that for so long. You bring up some good points, I appreciate the thorough comment - I like that!
@Gabelebabele
@Gabelebabele 3 года назад
You can also build from below the road piece which is amazing and groundbreaking because you can make raised roads and elevated roads and bridges that have the same road style as your level roads. AND you can make the road whatever width you want because they're modular!!!! And you don't have sidewalks that are 12 studs wide like you do when you put a modular building next to an old road. So for all these reasons I am 100% all for the new road piece. The old ones have been outdated for decades because they're actually not "in system" so you can't be creative with them.
@MONINOW
