It's called brand stretching. Many brands move into different product categories. Using their expertise from what they are famous for to make something they are not known for. It does not mean they don't want to do their original business anymore. It's just to diversify their business, and have more revenue streams. It's not wise to put all your eggs in one basket. Nor to rely on only one industry/business to make money.

Leica made watches before cameras.

This is going to be a challenge, however they do have a strong community therefore I don't see any problem for them to sell out.

@@jsirwin4824 Many have Omegas for good reason, they are exceptional in so many different areas. Not saying that the Leica watches aren’t as they make some of the best mechanical and digital cameras out there. I’m just not sure i’m willing to spend 10k+ on a watch that has little to no history.

Only time can tell. However they are putting a lot of effort in it.

With this watch they are going a different direction. They are pretty transparent on the suppliers for this watch. E.g. the movement is made by Chronode SA, who is very reputable for making swiss movements for high end independent watchmakers.

What would you change?

@@NikolausHirsch I feel if they designed a watch from their own style it would look more like a braun or junghans watch. So I guess they tried to differentiate themselves and over did it. But I think it would be better if they stuck to their own doctrine. Simple Functional design, top machining and quality. Precision comes to mind when I think Leica. The watch has way too much going on, heavy organic curves (almost early 2000’s „aliens“ and rounded bevels etc. Leica products never have organic shapes, and they chamfer almost all their edges. Therefor I would give the watch a really good movement. Maybe they would produce a custom rotor or something. and a simple sleek, sharper design. Brushed steel case. With a domed crystal, to reference their lenses, maybe it chamfered or have a unique coating, and it would be of course made in their lens factories. Maybe the second hand would a red accent.
