In 1983, Rossella Aquilanti moved to the abandoned village of Pentedattilo, in southern Italy. Today she is 63 years old and needs help with her farm. She met Maka Tounkara from Mali in a refugee shelter. The young farmer agreed to join her.
Calabria suffers from high unemployment. Many young people have had to leave the region. Rossella Aquilanti, by contrast, has created her own paradise here: 20 goats, a few olive trees and the magnificent surroundings are all she needs to be happy.
Maka Tounkara came to Italy on a refugee boat. For him, working with Rosella is an opportunity. The wages he earns allow him to support his fiancée back in Mali. Despite being very different, Rosella and Maka get on very well and work side by side.
The village of Pentedattilo, perched on the side of a mountain in Calabria, is falling increasingly to rack and ruin. But once a year it comes to life for the Pentedattilo Short Film Festival. The event draws cinema lovers, former residents, and inquisitive tourists, who have to walk the steep path up to the village.
Rossella and Maka are convinced that their simple, self-sufficient way of life could be an inspiration to others. The last two residents of Pentedattilo are hoping that other young people and migrants will follow their example and bring new life to Italy’s ghost towns.

What a great documentary. What a lovely and kind hearted woman. This world needs many more like her. This is a relationship of exchange. They both feed and need each other. They both value and respect each other. It's incredible that Maka is illiterate and Rosella has helped him learn and write. I truly wish the best for them. This was a treat to see. I had the good fortune to spend a week with Rosella in Pentedatilo in 2014 as a person traveling with WWOOF Italia. She is every bit as remarkable as she appears here. I think DW has painted a somewhat romanticized image of this place. The new pentedatilo town is an easy walk or rapid car ride on a paved road. And, at least in 2014, there were a few weekenders coming to work on their "getaways" in the abandoned old town. Though, to be sure, it's still mostly abandoned. I wouldn't characterize it as isolated, though. Nevertheless, Rossella is in actuality an amazing, kind, generous, and authentic person, who does genuinely choose a simple, low-impact life. One of a kind. And I will never forget the short time i had with her in such a beautiful and unique setting. Her openness and laughter stays with me. I'm happy to see this mutually beneficial relationship that has come about in the years since I was last there.

Such an inspiring, heart warming and wholesome documentary. I am excited to see Pentedattilo's coming back to life, all thanks to Rossella, Maka and the short film guy. As a film, food, and nature enthusiast, I am hoping to visit Pentedattilo's film festival, enjoy Rossella's food and savor the place's fresh air someday. Thank you DW Documentary for giving us this one of a kind story! 🥰💞

Two people from two different generation, culture, and country, but they are just the same people from heart: kind, hard working, and enjoy simple life. What a moving wonderful story! I truly think the Italian government should grant an except to allow Maka to bring his fiancé to live with him in Italy, to give them financial support so that they can bring this ghost village to life! ❤👍🙏 thank you for this beautiful story!

What a lovely & beautiful documentary ❤️. The story of Makka & Rosella is wholesome and heartwarming.Rosella is a very kind lady for giving out a helping hand to a hardworking refugee.Personally I would love to live in this ghost town because its very peaceful surronded by nature. All that matters is that Rosella is happy & satisfied for living in this town. She is doing what she loves. It was very sweet of Makka to say that he will stay by Rosella's side till the very end ❤.

I’m so happy to have found this short documentary. It’s truly inspiring to see Maka and Rosella living a content life amongst the rubble of this ghost town. It’s such a beautiful little village and it has such potential, but I can see why it was abandoned because willpower doesn’t seem a match to the powers of nature. The landslides will likely continue as the normal processes of erosion occur. I hope the very best for Maka. He’s such an inspiration to me. He rides and walks so far to learn a language because he knows this is the only way to build a better future for himself. I’m sure he feels very displaced living as a refugee in a foreign land without his family.

A place like Pentedattilo could benefit from people with the same appreciation of preserving its beauty as Rosella has. People, who understand how to prevent/stop erosion on steep slopes; e.g. planting grass & shrubs, adding vegetation, build terraces and diverting rain water. Landslides may be prevented with some knowledge of nature.
