What tent are you currently using? Would be great to see what you think of this one. Take care all, Si (please like the video if you enjoyed it - helps with the RU-vid algo ;) )
Great video as always. I picked up the 2 man version a few weeks ago for £365 but haven’t had a chance to use it yet. This is definitely a tent where you need a footprint though, the floor is very thin
@@SimonOutdoors I bought it from WildBounds, a decent site I use a fair bit but I’ve just had a look & they are not listing them on their site anymore. May just be out of stock. Have a great weekend.
Thanks for sharing, Simon! I can't agree more, it's a really great tent. I was on the WHW with the two person version and absolutely loved it. Easy and fast to pitch up and down in any condition. It withstood downpoor, hailstorms and really heavy galeforce winds in the Glencoe area. Other tents were blown away, Big agnes provided me with cosy and dry shelter for me and my gear. Dries up very fast and no problems with condensation. Worth every penny! Edit: I recommend purchasing a few additional tent pegs for windy conditions. It's well worth it
@@SimonOutdoors The WHW was georgeous! I'd do it again in a heartbeat despite the sometimes unruly weather and my feet crying for mercy because of the rough terrain.
I have the BA 2 person size. The thing I don't like is the floor size, it's not square and fitting two pads is impossible. So essentially a 2 person is a 1 person. The new MSR Hubba series now have square floors and a 2 person size will fit two pads nicely side by side.
You can pitch outer first there are a couple of RU-vid vids showing how .As I camp with my grandson Opted for HV UL3 love the extra space it gives . We also made a footprint from some tyvec (they were building new houses near us so begged some off cuts)
My MSR Hubba Hubba NX got wrecked in Glen Feshie a few years ago. Since then I’ve only bought Hilleberg, I don’t trust anything else. I don’t care about the extra weight, for me it’s worth it for the peace of mind. Great review as always Si.
I know what you mean mate, once you've had a bad experience you opt for quality for the added safety. I feel very safe in the Fjallraven! Which Hilliberg do you have?
@@SimonOutdoors Yeah, don’t get me wrong, if I was doing a longer trail I’d buy something different but for now the Hilles are the way forward. I’ve got the Keron 3, Soulo RL and Allak 3, I also have the Tarp10XP. Bit of an addict I’m afraid.
I did look at getting one of these a while back but lack of stock but paid to that , decent size garden as opposed to your balcony so guessing you’ve moved out of the big smoke 👍
@@SimonOutdoors gonna do a local one tomorrow on the White Cliffs. Bit windy today but looks a lot calmer tomorrow. Then getting set for the WHW next month. ATB 👍
Yeah well I'm about the same height too , around 197cm , so i think it will work for me too. In the land of Oz the MSR hubba NX is quite a bit more expensive than this Big Agnes tent . Seriously considered the Nemo range but not so keen on the rain fly not covering the tent properly at one end .
How does the copper spur performs in wind in comparison to the Hubba? I would expect it would perform quite the same because it has similar poles and a similar if not same pole structure as the hubba (and similar hight etc.). But i have read several times that it doesn t perform as well as the hubba. Is it because the Hubba has more or better placee guy out points?
Have you seen BA's new "Long" tents, like the Copper Spur HV UL2 Long? 96" length and 52" width at head and 42" at the feet. I don't think it's been released yet but it's about time companies besides Hilleberg started making longer length tents. Hope this continues.
Great comment and I've only been aware of them because of the comments on this video. Couldn't agree more, I think others will buy them too - not just tall people! Are you looking at getting one?
Thanks for sharing Simon, good looking tent. Is there a footprint that would allow an outer pitch first? Always wary of inner pitch first tents in our climate.
Hi mate, not that I'm aware of. I would say it's extremely quick to pitch, so if you have one of those small micro camping towels you can mop up any rain in the couple of minutes it takes to put up the inner and add the fly. Are you considering one / a new tent?
lunchtime and can’t wait to watch this one! It’s the comparison I’ve been trying to work out recently when looking for a tent my wife can use (and me 🙂) for South West Coast Path. But she wants to take our German Pointer on some sections…hmmmmm. Unless the pointer toughens up I can’t see her sleeping in the porch 😂 But what’s with all the high prices, seems every day the Hubba goes up £20. Thoughts on stability without apex guys on the BA? Great content again Simon. ATB, Paul
Thanks mate, nothing too detailed but some obvious things that I noticed. I will do a more detailed comparison at some stage. Hope the lunch went well and thanks again for the beer!
Makes sense Kev, was saying to another subscriber it's rapid to put up so you could probably mop up any small amount of rain you might get with one of those micro towels. Hope you're well? Cheers, Si
Hey man, I’ve pretty much settled on getting some version of this tent. I’m 195cm tall as well and was wondering if I’d fit with a 10cm pad and a warm sleeping bag. There is the Long version of the UL2 now, but that’s obviously heavier, more expensive and not green haha. Do you have to sacrifice certain things in the UL1 (like head touching the inner tent, not sitting upright, touching the sides etc.) I have a background in hammock camping and am therefore used to confined spaces. At the same time I am looking for a little more space and luxury. If the UL1 ends up being a compromise for weight that might not fit my needs. Cheers!
Hi mate, I fit in it fine with a 10cm bag and warm pad also. My head doesn't touch when I sit up and I don't touch the sides. It's also long enough. The overhead pocket is genius and with the vestibule you've still got a decent amount of space. Hope it helps :)
Great tent review simon..! .. and its been a long time since I've heard the word piddly 😁..... .... im going to get the abisko lite 1 soon..... and possibly a new sleeping matt can I ask what sleeping matt you use for this ?..... this will be my first low profile 1 man tent and I don't want to over do the size to for this . Many thanks Alan ....
Cheers Alan, bringing back the 80's words! Lol. I use a thermarest neoair xlite. It's comfortable and low profile enough. Are there any you have been looking at? I put a Trekology in there and it was way too fat! Cheers, Si
@@SimonOutdoors Hi Simon, sorry for the late reply, ..... ive got a sea to summit ultralight with one of those zlite thermarest silver and yellow fold up mats underneath... i think i will stick to that for now ..... and see how it fits into the new abisko tent ⛺
Love this tent we have had it for just over 3 yrs can stuff it into small stuff sacks and keep poles separate only issue is it is bright orange, but as we are off to the use later this year have contacted BA to see if I can get a green outer . With regards to wear and tear have not experienced ant issues (touch wood) although it is used only about once a month. We did camp one weekend in torrential rain and it felt like a river running underneath but we were dry which is the most important thing. Hope to do a week hiking the SDW with grandson in July now he is older he can carry more (and I can carry less). How are you enjoying the tent ?
Why not put the son to work! Great you’re enjoying it Brian, hopefully you manage to get the new fly sorted. It’s a superb tent, could do with a bit more space as it’s the one person but otherwise I can’t complain. I used it on the east highland way and kept me dry. Were BA’s customer service helpful mate?
@@SimonOutdoors I contacted BA by email (on the customer support page) filled in the form for replacement parts (fly). They were quick to respond and needed further information, which has now been sent, they have acknowledged and will confirm if they have a green fly available. They also confirmed that they are able to ship to our hotel in the USA in August if the fly is available. Just have to wait to see if they have one in stock and how much it will cost. (if too expensive will stick with the orange that I have). Will let you know the outcome
Hi Simon, the thermarest and the sea to summit air bed fit really well in the abisko lite 1 ... can't wait to go camping! I have a question about your abisko : on the inside of the outer fly where the main zip is, at the bottom just below the female velcro tab do you have a round hole about 5mm across on the main fabric? I'm wondering if this is a defect or a drain hole where the fabric is doubled up?...Many thanks Alan.
Great question Alan, I will check next time I use her and let you know mate. Thanks for letting me know about the sleep pads. Which one do you use in it?! Cheers, Si
@@SimonOutdoors cheers Simon.... when you spend big bucks on a tent your allowed to be a bit fussy about imperfections....I use both mats together ... I only got my abisko yesterday and am yet to use it properly im pleasantly surprised how much space is inside for a 1 man tent.
Looks like a nice piece of kit Simon but a bit pricey for me, the wife would kill me. However I did order this morning the 3F UL GEAR Lanshan 1 Pro, which gets really good reviews. I aim to use it on some fell camps this year ! Cheers Pal 😀
Nice one Martin, I used that one for the West Highland Way and it worked really well. Let me know how you get on with it. Lightest one for the money. Where did you buy from? Cheers, Si
I have the bikepacking 2 person tent which I love as it packs small, but I am now looking to save some pack weight as much as possible for a couple of multi day hikes and wondering whether to get the 1 person version also. Thanks for the review. Curious to see how well the BA would do in strong winds.
@@SimonOutdoors Great channel. Watched the EHW yesterday, good that you show the detail of the walk, terrain etc helps when deciding whether to add it on the wish list :) I went for an Xmid 1 as they came back on sale today. When I looked the BA bike packing UL2 was available not the 1
@@hiking4nature807 So interesting you say that, I wanted to get the 2 person BA for the EHW but it was unavailable. It became available the day of my trip! Thanks for watching. Are you doing a long distance walk this year?
@@SimonOutdoors I'm hoping to get some time later this year to finish the rest of the Cleveland Way and next spring either the EHW or WHW, but need to recapture some fitness first as don't get a lot of free time with caring for my Mum and work. Would love to do the Cape Wrath or Sky Trail, but need to seriously work on fitness for that. Great channel Simon :)
@@hiking4nature807 the WHW is easily done without too much fitness I reckon, it’s marked so well which really helps. Many thanks for watching, really appreciate it. I looked up the Sky Trail, looks amazing! Si
Great tent roomy one man tent I have one for sale with the proper footprint that enables you to pitch the outer first. I got the two man and paid a load for it imported.
@@SimonOutdoors Yes Simon I got a larger REI quarter dome tent, I couldn't get the two man BA easy so this is a very similar tent. I just need the footprint now so I can erect the outer first like I do with the BA CS tent. The Big Agnes is great I'm well over 6 foot and this tent is one of the few tents that is actually longer than I need and its great at controlling condensation
Good to see you are pleased with your Big Agnes. As I previously mentioned I had the 2 man version on backorder last spring, but ended up cancelling it with ongoing restrictions and the increasing price from the States. Also I expect it to get a minor upgrade soon. How did you find the waterproofness and abrasion resistance of the bathtub in Scotland, as it is not that heavy duty? Also did you look at their additional groundsheet, which allows the outer to be pitched first? A bit pricey - but adds flexibility. Anyway good to see you uploading again. ATB
Waterproofness is spot on mate, abrasion resistance seems good so far. I know they are thinner but unless you scrape it along something really sharp I think you will be good. And that would probably rip any tent. I think it's the fact it is thin that might put some people off but no problems so far. I didn't look at that mate, great shout - will take a look. Great to hear from you, are you thinking of ordering the 2 man again? Cheers, Si
@@SimonOutdoors Thanks for the feedback Simon. Yes the BA Copper Spur is still top of my list, but I am tracking news on updates, pricing and improved availability. For instance there is a new 'Long' version of the Copper Spur 2-man due out in a couple of months. So if you are looking to switch to the UL2 that would be ideal for you... UL2 Reg Long RRP: $499 $529 Length 224 244 cm Height 102 109 cm Width same Weight 1.22 1.30 Kg . As for me, I may just wait until next spring - as I am thinking of heading over to the States next year to walk more of the PCT (first started in the 80's 😂). So that could save me a fair bit of money, shipping costs, and ensure I get the latest model...
@@MuddyDuck... this is excellent many thanks mate, will look out for the longer version. It’s not a short walk so I don’t blame you if it’s take a lot longer! Would love to hear how you get on
Its jumped to the top of my list, I'm pretty much the same height as you, so seeing that you fit the UL1 is great news, I think if I'm going to shell out for a UL2, then a few quid more would be worth it for even more space.
@@Beeblebrox900 was thinking the same mate, for another £80 or so you can go up to the 2. It’s annoying it was out of stock when I bought the 1 person but I’m still really pleased with it
@@SimonOutdoors bought it last spring from Absolute Snow for just over £500 with the costly ground sheet (£70) included cos I wanted the option to use without the inner if I chose (which I haven't yet lol). I knew it was expensive but I would do the same again ffs :/
it's about £200 overpriced they must miss so many sales by putting tents at silly prices this doesn't cost any more to make than a £150 tent like why would anyone buy this over a lanshan
Agree mate, I do feel all the extra toggles, clips and materials, zips etc are better quality than the cheaper tents. But as you say, a lot of margin for the company in there. Would have a lot of confidence in it in bad weather, Si
Erm.. Have you cloned Simon Outdoors' channel?.. Because you don't look like him.. Even the logo has similarities 🤔 How have you got more subs than him? Think you should least steer some traffic his way.. It's the least you should do...🧐 Not to mention, sending him that add revenue.. Is your name even Simon..🤔
