I’ve got to say I’ve got mine through the post on Sunday the 60 W version and its absolutely brilliant I am bit of a tube snob but now realise it’s come such a long way even from the fender tone master that I own it’s come along way since that amp, happy days.

Wow, im getting one of these. That Crunch setting sounded so freaking good. I got John mayer live vibes from it. Dark and middy tone. Love it. The fact i can use it to run my stomp through is a bonus. Nice Demo, much appreciated!

Paul is such a nice man and an outstanding example of the right man doing the right job in the right place. No one could do this better. It's such a pleasure to watch and hear him, he can effortlessly explane in understandable language and examples what the people who they aim for need to hear and see. @@mikel6237 what I like more about the catalyst that it has a more realistic dynamic that mimics a real tube amp better. The vypyr has a more compressed sound, even though some amp sounds are good too.

For anybody considering one of these, the 60w is seriously loud ! I use mine on the 0.5 watt mode for use at home which is perfect. Full power mode is blow your windows out levels it’s is unreal!

@@w4dZ0o excellent pedal platform, I mainly use clean and boutique. I have a nux Cerberus which has drives, reverbs and modulation (seriously check it out real good pedal)) . also my boss looper using 4 cable method. what I have found is that I need to play with bass mid treble and presence to get it have more clarity and cut through more. on the clean setting I basically turn bass down to 1/4 mids around 1/4 and treble between 1/4 and 1/2. presence about half way gain up and Chanel volume up... gives me the best platform to build from........

@@w4dZ0o no honestly it doesnt matter except for volume as it really doesnt lose any of the tone. just get it set the way it sounds good to you then use the master to adjust to a good level for your situation. i run mine at the first setting on attenuater (think its 0.5w) and its feckin loud!!!!

I'd like to see a more full featured footswitch that let you do Bank Up/Down (to access all 6 banks of Ch. A/B), plus a Boost on/off switch, and a new "Lead" button that lets you dial in a master volume boost for leads (no tone change, just louder). My (wounded) Helix LT may cost more to repair than just buying the 100W version of this.

I don’t hear any fizziness in any of those models. They all sound like amps, not like models of amps. I’m very impressed and $400 for the 100W is a great price point (and Paul is so good!)

Well there is another ceompetitor to the katana amp What sets the cartalyst series apart from the other competitors ist one mostly overlooked feature that the katana has as well:: the power switching. so you can adjust your power depending on the situation you're in. Nice to see someone finally realized that this is a big selling point for the katana.

After working with both for some time these are my quick comments. Both are GREAT! The Katana 50 is a home practice amp due to NO EFX LOOP, and limited foot switching capabilities, and lesser speaker. Katana 100 is the FAR SUPERIOR LIVE AMP... with EFX LOOP, FABULOUS foot switching capabilities, global EQs, enormous EFX selection, Better Speaker with tight Low End, LOUD, and Acoustic Guitar settings ! I preferred the CATALYST for Studio recording for the variety and type of Voices, the Very Useful Sag, Bias, & Bias X controls, EFX LOOP, And Direct Out Sound. The speaker tends to be a little FLUBBY and the foot switch controls are EXTREMELY limited! Quite Happy with Both!!!

I have a Line 6 Pod Go and an Alto FRFR speaker which does it all for me. A bit more expensive than a Catalyst but hugely more flexible with looper, footswitch, snapshots and a huge range of amps and effects. This Catalyst will appeal to the Boss Katana market though...

I got a 200 and use it with a modeler. Plenty of headroom. Even with a drum machine. Really incredible sound. Better than the Fender GTX100… it sounds REAL.

Assuming if I wanted to get a 60w Catalyst to use as a powered cab (as I run all sounds from my Valeton GP200), that going into the effects return all functions of the amp would be bypassed and therefore inert? apart from the master volume or would that be bypass also?

Sad that the 100 or 200 don't have front facing controls. Most of these go onto stands that lean back; so you have to be a gymnast to view any knobs. That was the main selling point for me with the Katana Artist..

I have a pair of Katana Mk2 100 heads and they sound great in stereo and/or the "stereo expand" mode. I also have their 2-bank, 6-button footswitch that is extremely convenient for the boost and effects. In the "stereo expand" mode you can control both amps with a single footswitch. The Catalyst needs to upgrade the footswitch by leaps and bounds to compete. Also, the phaser and flanger in the Catalyst sounded blah to me.

MIDI. I have a fully programmable midi pedal which means I can switch any function on/off..change banks etc. Agree they should have shipped with at least a 4 button switch though.

Sounds great but the foot switch is woefully inadequate for the functionality of the amp. They need to make at least a 4 button version available. Channel switch, boost, FX and tap tempo. And maybe a bank scroll. That would make it so much more stage ready.

By FAR the Spider IV (75 and above) still is the ALL INTEGRATED MOST COMPLETE PACKAGE Line 6 has ever produced with the amp and the great "FBV Shortboard MkII" pedalboard/remote control. A package with lots of effects, with a pre and post BOOST, with sections way way more controllable than the rest of the lines of amps using the pedalboard and the "Spider IV Edit" program. The Catalyst may sound a little better than the Spider V or Spider IV, but Line 6 has taken away EVERYTHING that really made the Spider IV and exceptional package. I've used a Spider V 120 MkII for a while, 'cause I needed to use acoustic guitars with the same amp, but the "Spider V Remote" preset editor is a cumbersome tool (compared to the "Spider IV Edit" preset editor where everything about a preset is on one single window) as you need to page and page through all available options until you lose your mind, and features are missing like the highly useful pre and post BOOST functions, and most effects and setting features on the Spider V have way less control, like if you want a fix tempo to control echo or other effects' speed or not. And of course the Catalyst has NONE OF ALL THAT. So I sold my Spider V, and I'll keep both my Spider IV 75 and 150 for as long as they'll work. I use them for all small venues low budget gigs, and they never ever failed to deliver.

Such a wonderful review with lots of variation, styles of playing, different levels of tones, good explanation and input from you both. I'm inclined to buy one of these. Thumbs up. I didn't like the review of the previous guy I watched ( cough-cough a certain Yngwie-wannabee..) as he just burned straight through the Amp, played some cleans then went back into his Yngwie mode and shot the Amp down because he wasn't happy with its crunch tones or something. One of the reasons I unsubscribed from his channel as he just got too boring tbh. I love that there's a lot of input and variety to listen to hear which I find appealing and more fair. And a bit of Amp history and personal opinions is a plus! Thank you!

If it’s going to take a shot at the katana, it’s falling short on the ease of control on the amp (wtf is with holding buttons and twirling knobs at the same time lol it’s 2022) and it certainly doesn’t touch it for FX (odd coming from one of the best digital effects companies) with one fx slot and one reverb slot. I get the simplicity but the comparison to a katana isn’t….really fair. This is fewer features for (above the 60 watt) more money. Henning Pauly does a great job of revealing the gaps. I grabbed one of the 60 watts, and it’s gonna have to stand pretty tall to knock down my Katana MK2 head. But I am curious to hear one in my space. Could be a great clean platform, where the Nextone Special kinda fell flat since they’re so pricey.

Agreed on the nextone statement for sure. I think they are great amps but the pricing is way off. If they were similarly priced to katanas I’d probably own one.

This is bad ass! But they need to make a helix combo amp already maybe 100w 1x12 combo amp 200w 2x12 combo amp, and a 200w head model

I was Positive Grid would enter this space and make a 1x12 version of their Spark amp. I would buy that over this or the Katana or the Fender GTX.

Got the 200. I'd LOVE a better, user friendly, manual! That's what's "missing".

Anyone else have the old vypyr peavey stuff? Not the new vip stuff. Ive got a 75w Peavey Vypyr solid state with a blue marvel 12" and a sanpera 1 footswitch. Side by side to the Katana, the Peavey has better lead tones, the boss has better crunch and clean tones. Both are super affordable and have tons of options for tones be it from different amp types to stompboxes and the peavey even has a looper. Compared to most other solid state tech and even some tube amps out there, these amps are killing it.

Videos are not the best way to judge - BUT, I think the Catalysts sound a lot better than the Katanas. I wish they had not limited the effects to just one at a time (delay, modulation, and pitch) would have been nice if you could use one of each along with the reverb. I don't think the younger players will mess with MIDI, but for the experienced player, it is wonderful that MIDI is included. And there are inexpensive MIDI controllers (one ex is the M-VAVE 4 footswitch controller - a little limited, but still a viable tool, and only $35). Paul is a great player and a superb spokesperson.
