Flying the LS8-e neo in Italy was a lot of fun. With this review I will show you the most important technical features of the glider and FES propulsion system.
These are my personal thoughts about the LS8-e neo and this video is not sponsored by DG Flugzeugbau.
More information about the glider: www.dg-flugzeugbau.de/en/airc...
Many thanks to Julia Steinle for the thumbnail and helping me to film the review on the ground.

It must be on the expensive side of gliders, but I love it's high tech dashboard. Also the electric propulsion is nice feature for gaining altitude when it's really need.

The point at this glider is, that the construction of it is already almost 30 years old. In fact its even older because the Ls8 is basicly a Ls6 with fixed flaps, so you can say that the glider is from the 80s. Of course the Ls8 became kind of a legend with the time because it flies really easy but though has a good glide ratio (should be about 44:1) . Also its one of the most used glider for competitions in the standard class besides the discus 2. So DG in fact builds a glider, which is more than 30 years old. They do only small facelifts (like the neo winglets and so on) on them. The gliders of them cant compete with gliders of today, but nevertheless they cost a lot.

Most people don't own gliders. They join a gliding club and pay membership fees which entitle them to fly the club's aircraft. It's mostly volunteers that do the instruction and that's usually free. You just pay for the launch and a nominal hourly rate for the aircraft. You should check it out... it's a really great scene.

Almost nothing about is free but gliding is not expensive when compared to other sports. Most gliding clubs are run by volunteers ie. Members and may have only a couple of employees (usually instructors). There's also amazing rates for under 25's which can make the flying almost free, young people just need to be able to make their way to the airfield and you can borrow club gliders until you give up flying if you don't want to buy one. As with cars (also not free 😉) there's a second hand market and often random people buy one together and share annual costs in a syndicate. It costs as much as you want to put in to it. £50 a month can buy you an hour or more of flying and that's basically a cheap meal out for two with someone you really liiiiike

Literally first glider video I saw an hour ago got me thinking that it would be a nice addition to have an electric motor with a folding prop on one of those in case the pilot fails to find any lift. Then I thought that of course that would be a compromise on the gliding abilit, because of the weight so maybe it's not the best idea. Googled the weight of some glider, did some quick rough maths about weight, electric motors and energy consumption then realized it might not be such a bad idea. Literally a few recommendations later this video shows up and I feel validated lol.

Thank you for the interesting video: it gives a nice insight into the operational realities of a FES equipped glider. You make an interesting comment that the LS8, when compared to the '29, is the more 'communicative' glider regarding thermal structure and hence easier to core quickly. I was wondering how you would rate the Libelle in this regard?
@SteFly
@SteFly 4 года назад
The Std. Libelle (without winglets) is also very communicative but compared to the LS8 not so stable. You need to fly the Libelle more actively and it takes more concentration. But the feeling of the thermals was also very good.

Thank you for the video. That is one cool glider. I noticed you have a spot personal locator beacon on. I’m glad you have a beacon. But you might consider getting the ACR brand. There is a few reasons for this. One the ACR brand has no monthly fee. It also has 5 W of power. This way if you were down in the canyon or under a snow covered canopy it will have the power to get out where the spot only has 1/2 of 1 W. The spot also has a monthly fee. Finally the ACR brand is part of a worldwide search and rescue network that many governments are on board with and the ACR beacon will work anywhere in the world even the north or south pole. The spot uses a private satellite network and there are reports of the beacon being set off and them not dispatching search and rescue because they think it is not a real emergency. That is not an option with the other network. Also the other networks at ACR uses uses two different satellite constellations. Anyway just wanted to point that out beautiful glider thank you

Thanks mate! Yes, it´s really time consuming to film and edit so many videos. Especially during competitions it is stressful. But now I´m back home and take some time to edit the footage. I had no time to make a proper range test only with the electrical motor. At one day I used 3,3 kWh and the battery was already fairly empty and the FCU said that I should reduce the power, even in level flight with 5 kW setting... So the reality is something between 60 - 80 km range in calm air. But most of the time this is enough.

wouldn't extend the range. Adding ballast extends range. Look up the glider's polar curve at different wing loadings. In any case you need tail ballast to shift the CoG back to the right position if you fly without the batteries.

Somehow it should be possible to drop the battery when it is empty with a parachute away. Maybe motor aswell.

"It's too noisy in here" well, it is but you can wear headsets for the noise. Nice glider

If you're flying a glider, you don't want to need noise canceling headsets. It's like heavy vibrations on a bicycle...

Besides the tow-hook, what else is sacrified for the FES engine compared to the normal LS8? Can the rudder pedal go as far to the front, (the normal LS8 is not that big)? Is is still possible to put trimmweights behind the rudderpedals?
@SteFly
@SteFly 4 года назад
At the prototype the rudder pedal looses one step, so it is about 3 cm shorter. But in the next gliders they will change it and the full length will be available. Trimmweight should be possible, at least I had some trimmweights in the trailer. ;)

Nice glider but the lack of t/o capability kills it for me. I'm extremely happy with my Silent 2 Electro which never needs a tow thus allowing me to fly out of my nearest airport whenever the conditions look right. It also allows me to extend my gliding season by about 2 months as all the clubs here are on grass fields which aren't usable until the snow is gone and the field is dry. It would be nice to have the extra performance of an 18m but only if I could take off.

If anyone is curious. Those 'screws' are commonly called zues clips/screws. Commonly used for quick on and off panel applications in the automotive world as they only take half a turn or so.

How about a tour of the instrument panel ? What are the buttons on the stick for ? How many KWHr is the battery ?
@SteFly
@SteFly 4 года назад
The instrument panel is a state of the art panel with LX9070 glide computer and the remote stick is for user inputs to the glide computer in flight. The remote stick is neccessary, because my arm is too short to use the rotary knobs and buttons in a comfortable way. Both battery packs together have a 4,2 kWh of energy, which is max. 80 km range of pure electric flying.
@SomeTechGuy666
@SomeTechGuy666 4 года назад
@@SteFly Wow, just wow. 80Km is enough to prevent a lot of off glider port landings. Can you charge the battery in the glider ? What is the L/D on that thing ? How much drag does the prop add ? Is that where the cockpit noise is coming from ? Please do a video on that panel, both on the ground and using it in the air. Does it have a radio ? ADS-B ? What is the "Fire Warning" button about ? The battery system ?

@@SteFly Its an amazing efficient use of elektrickel energy. In comparison to petrol engines : 1kg petrol has 11kwh Energy in stock. No petrol sustainer can drive a glider for 80 km with 1l of petrol.
@NGC1433
@NGC1433 4 года назад
@@arminmoller9927 Well no. With the weight of those batteries in gasoline - this glider would fly across a continent. And it is 4.2kWh for both batteries combined. You can get a self launch, not a sustainer with the same weight.
@folkenvanvanel6611
@folkenvanvanel6611 4 года назад
@@SomeTechGuy666 The panel has a "air control display" its a combined Altimeter/Radio/Transponder controller. The plane for sure has a Powerflarm integrated into the LX Computer which features ADS-B in. The LD is 1:50 for 18m. Don't know about the drag.
