i feel like artificers should have access to the staffs and druid should be able to use the spider staff as well.

At level 14 artificers can use any magic items including staff. This will allow them to cast spells higher level spell then the max level 5 artificer spells. Yes 14th of kind of long wait😢

Artificers are meant to mostly use weapons or devices/magic items in combat, not primarily by using their own spell slots

@@13thTemplar718 in 3.5 they had a skill called use magic device which very few classes had the ability to gain Proficiency in. It was one the staple skills for the artificer. This translated into the the Thief subclass top ability and artificers 14 ability in 5th edition. It allows them to use any scroll wand or staff or any other device that wasn't meant for their class to use if they made the the check. The artificers were the king at this.(Artificers originated from 3rd Edition). They were known for using complex devices including crossbows, magazine crossbows and pistols. Magic was week but they found out by using powerful magic items instead of actual casting. There magic items for stronger in 3rd edition and you expected to have more while you're not expected to have many or any magic items in 5th edition.

Exactly, the DM has 100% control of what magic items exist in their games. If you have a sorcerer in your party, just don't give out the crystals, if you're classes begin blurred

The Cape of Enlargement should be able to stack with enlarge/reduce because it isn’t casting the enlarge part of enlarge/reduce. This should also stack with rune knight features

All up to your DM. In 3.5 different sources of an effect would generally stack, in 5e they really tried to neuter compounding bonuses because it makes things whacky fast. My DM wouldn't allow it, when I DM I'd allow it to stack with the rune knight features for sure, maybe enlarge/reduce but not both until it's later in the game. I'd explain "Look, I can only handle so much. If you want to just walk through this feeling like a god I can make everyone's AC 10, and give them 1-10HP depending. But it'll get boring, we're playing so you can over come a challenge ya? So let's keep it a little challenging."

The bracers have a lot of synergy with the ranger: they get a climbing/swimming speed equal to their walking speed. So with the bracers, they now have 30 + 10 = 40 ft. of movement speed, then climbing/swimming speed equal to that, with +10 ft. ontop of that for a total of 50 ft. of climbing speed.

The +4 on the Netherese ring is something ive also missed from older editions when different weapons like sai's gave tou a bonus to disarm somebody.

I suspect the ring of protection was buffed considering it's a strictly worse cape of protection

did you just say the ring of protection is worse??? is that just due to the rarity because the cloak is definitely not as good seeing as the are much better cloaks and you can only wear one cloak but you can wear at least 8 rings.

@@destynzimmerman6125 there's no rule like that, you can wear as many cloaks and rings as you want And they both cost one of your 3 attunement slots

@@codebracker DMG, page 141, Multiple Items of the Same Kind, "A character can't normally wear more than one pair of footwear, one pair of gloves or gauntlets, one pair of bracers, one suit of armor, one item of headwear, and one cloak. You can make exceptions; a character might be able to wear a circlet under a helmet, for example, or to layer two cloaks." The DM can make an exception to let a character wear multiple cloaks, but the rules say normally you can only wear one cloak. That section doesn't mention rings.

We can play Godzilla now! Level 6 kobold or dragonborn - lv 3 Rune Knight, Lv 3 Wizard or Sorcerer with Enlarge and one Cape of Enlargement. Activate Giant's Might, then cast Enlarge/Reduce followed by activating the cape. Congratulations you are now Gargantuan per RAW with only one item!

Really should check out the PaB:SO vids on D&D RU-vid channel. The Senior Game Designer for this book admitted not only her love of mind flayers but the synergy with BG3 as intentional.

Honestly excited to see more about the adventure and what updates have been made. Im hoping they've expanded the black spiders role a little bit as that was one of the only lacking things i had with the original adventure

I agree that the mindblasting cap is not worth the attunement slot. I would probably houserule that away. I'm also curious as to how this module transitions to involving mind flayers. My DM ran this pre-pandemic and we continued it afterwards homebrew. Not once did he involved mind flayers. Instead, we fought trogs and lizardfolk. He was just as shocked to see that mind flayers were involved with this adventure. BG3 might have had a huge influence. I agree that daylight should do more beyond lots of light and affect creatures with sunlight sensitivity, especially for a 3rd level spell, but it being sunlight is too much. That's what sunbeam is for. Even sunburst, an 8th level spell, doesn't count as sunlight. I don't understand the change to the spider staff or staff of defense either. I'll just keep the original versions. At most, maybe make them Very Rare and change the staff of defense to be "lesser" and "greater" versions (original and new).

I dont know about the mindblast cap. Using its ability is a bonus action, so it doesn't compete with many options, and can cause one of the nastiest effects: Stunned (and there before incapacitated). It can affect many targets and ...its an INT save, which means a lot of creatures are gonna be failing it. Even 1 turn stunned can be quite a problem

Staff of glass before it was only for sorc and wiz, now warlock and bard get into the party, i would like clarifications on if the +1 ac comes also from attunement or like weapons and armors u can get the bonus without the other benefits. Also u can't use it with a cleric with crazy high ac

God, I need to delve deep for this one... I *think* as it stands, if it's a +1 weapon, you still get the bonus if you don't attune. Anything above needs attunement. Also you still need to Attune in order to gain the other benefits of the item. For example any extra spells or effects. Don't quote me on this, as it's been ages since I've had to deal with this situation, and I'm sure someone will be able to to pull up page numbers. But this is how I've always played the game.

@@zedgathegreat9122 i also think it works like this, so it should be a buff among the scale cause before everyone could get the +1 ac, but only wiz and sorc could use shield and mage armor. Now the +1 ac remains the same, u no longer need to know the spells which is good for non hexblade warlocks, and bards got a nice buff, only battlesmith got the short end of the stick

Am I wrong that the growth cape will let a Rune Knight Fighter before Gargantuan, since it's technically not the Enlarge / Reduce spell? Rune Knight enlarge + Enlarge spell + cape

Actually, you become huge if you take it all the way to eighteenth level. If this Cape is not attached to the spell enlarge/reduce, characters can FINALLY go Colossal!

Got a poll for yall. Would you/your DM approve this magic item concept? Masterful Halfplate +2, provides a +2 bonus to AC and Proficiency Bonus. Armor once owned by a renowned swordmaster sorta fluff story. No additional powers as the Prof Bonus gives so many characters extra uses of certain abilities or higher DCs to resist their powers and lots of generally improved ability checks. It would really constitute just making a character a bit better at most things they already do, and isn't so focused on one thing it overpowers certain characters. Its a suit that would make almost anyone consider getting a feat just to accommodate wearing it, or avoid the stealth disadvantage for wearing it, thus "consuming" a very valuable resource from many potential wearers.

I would allow it around Lvl15 its a powerful item Most +2 items would be worse than this bc you have to hold them aswell as them not giveing bonus to ability uses. most items wouldnt give +2to weapon atacks, spell atacks, certain saveing throws and checks Aditionaly this would stack with a magic weapon as it isnt held alowing the player to get verry high hit chances makeing it more like a +3item in power I would probably alow it at lower levels(12min) if it was reserved for eg fighters rouges and barbarians only as it would even out the difference between them and casters And have a smaller overall benifit as it wont also be buffing spellcasting in most cases

@@ameise1595 it is powerful enough I saw it as a late game item meant to feel like a "cap stone" for some of the toss away cap stones classes specifically. It's more than a +4 Primary stat item, but not likely to be as beneficial as a +9 Str belt for a straight fighter.

They didn't nerf either staff as both had the caveat of "you can use your action to cast one of the following spells from the staff if the spell is on your class’s spell list" so your Monk should have never been able to use the spells of the Spider Staff. Regardless, both staffs got a boost as now even more characters can cast the spells than previously. Of course, anyone can't attune to them anymore to gain the single feature but frankly, who is going to attune to an item that they only get one benefit from? Either way, I do agree Mindblasting Cap should come with more given its rarity. Frankly, they should just roll its features into the Mindguard Crown and make it a single item. Which speaking of, the Mindguard Crown plus a Totem Barbarian will be absolutely nasty.

That is a nerf because as he pointed out, Monks and Clerics could not benefit from the passive features. As a monk the extra 1d6 damage per hit was pretty impactful and the +1 AC was appreciated by anyone with a free hand. Limiting it to just those four classes severely limits who could use the passives.

​@@zackmyers805 That is not how nerfs work. More characters can use each staff at full power than before. Furthermore, there are numerous items at this point that can allow for a +1 to AC or extra damage. All of these are better options than half of an item that will fill one of three precious attunement slots. But for the sake of argument, if you take newer stuff off the table there are two OG items that immediately outclass each staff. 1) Flame Tongue weapons are rare, require attunement and can be wielded by Monks and Clerics (who would actually go into melee) as each staff could. Except they do twice as much damage as the Spider Staff. 2) Cloak of Protection, is uncommon so it is more accessible and it gives a +1 to saving throws as well as +1 to AC. Anyone who calls these changes a nerf is nitpicking and the worst kind, factually incorrect nitpicking. Monks did not get hurt by this and Clerics did not get hurt by this. But Bards (and to a lesser extent Warlocks) got a huge boon by being given access to spells they don't usually (or easily) have access to on top of the extra damage and AC bump.

Flame tongues are usually snapped up by fighters and any other class that has multiple attacks per round over the monk who can only use short sword flame tongues. Clerics could use flame tongue but again that tends to get grabbed by anyone that has multiple weapon attacks per round. Cloak of protection and Bracers of defense stack with the Staff of defense

I think you get the idea why I replaced Mind Flayers in my campaigns. Because Mind Flayers have been done to death. However, I replaced them with...ahem...Space Clowns, which I expanded in their lore....so take that what you will.

Attuning to a magic item takes an hour, yeah? Pass the ring around on watch. The enemy will only get an hour rest at a time, while yall sleep. Or, like you said, someone who doesnt need sleep like a book of shadows tomelock or a warforged

But you dont select a specific person when you use the ring, all creatures in a mile can hear you so it would keep your party members awake as well. (Unless they have Leomund's Tiny Hut)

@@crownlexicon5225 yes, but silence only last for 10 minute so it might not be enough if you want to keep your enemy awake all night long. (and as you said; not everyone can cast it to keep it going each watch)

I'm sad that they are actively removing options that monks have for magic items. Those staves were a pretty decent choice even without the additional spells.

3:02 if it increases all speeds by +10 does that mean I can gain 10 ft. of movement to everything? I mean 0 + 10 = 10. So +10 fly, climb, burrow, etc.?

It is a bit ambiguous as written. I think I would rule it as any type of movement you have a speed in gets a +10ft buff. So if you had a climb speed for example, that would get increased, but if you don't have a swim speed, you still don't have a swim speed.

Agreed, I would rule that there is a difference between a 0 ft climb/swim/fly speed, and just not having a climb/swim/fly speed.

Yeah yeah new magic items, restricted and requires attunement. I hate attunement and I'm glad my DM fect it out the window and had it just if it was race our class restricted item. Unlimited attunement except using the older rules for the amount of Magic items you can have active on you!

For a product designed as a "return to form" for 5th ed, and introducing an entirely new dimension, I am disappointed at these designs. Other than the Netherese Ring of Protection these are all exceptionally boring, not only in terms of functional design but in terms of lore. Its like they can't even use the Special Features section of CH.7 in the DMG to design their OWN magic items, and make them more interesting. Imagine if magic items mutated somehow through exposure to the Far Realm! Make some tables, bam
