I recently attended a Magnepan demonstration where they showed off their new Ultra Wideband Bass units, (not subwoofers!) What are they, how do they sound, and can they integrate with LRS or other fast, panel speakers? Watch and find out!

I heard these at APOXNA last year. Very imperessive to say the least. HOWEVER, one year later, still a prototype, pinned grill cloth, no news on availability, price, different models, DSP or not, and so on. I love Maggies! I currently use 3.7i's and have owned 5 other pair in my lifetime. My message to Magnepan is either get on with it or quit trying to promote a non existent product. Either it is a commercial reality or it is not.

Axpona last year? Thats almost a year later, maybe they have been developing it still with all of the feedback...I'm going to the Montreal show next weeked, I'll see if there is any Magnepan representation there that I can get more details from! I guess a lot of people are waiting for this given all the promotion.

I agree. Vaporware is impressive in theory, but the product will be quite expensive, and it'll be years before it comes out. I own two pairs of Maggies, but my next pair of speakers will be the Zu Audio Union 6. Efficiency, detail, and airy spaciousness to rival my Maggies, but dynamics to completely blow them away. And they're real speakers. Right now. Not just a fancy proof of concept that's years and thousands of dollars in the future. Zu has enjoyable sound, finesse, detail, and dynamics that must be heard to be believed.
@davelistenstohifi

Yes, dynamics of efficient speakers can be quite a drug! I have not heard much from Zu, but I was super impressed with a set of Devore speakers, they are quite efficient as well.

Kind of makes perfect sense to use it as a center channel, can do double home theatre duty.

Yes, that might be a great application! Weird form factor to make it work, though.

I've owned Maggies since 2001 and currently have the 1.7i. I've heard a lot about those bass units and the sneaky demo😉. Hopefully they'll come to SoCal for some demos.

Hey Tony, if you need some extra bass I think that these are just the ticket. Didn't hear them with Maggies, just the Martin Logans, but I'm sure it will be a similar match. Not sure if you will need another amp to power them or not, still lots of questions!

If it’s a good design, they can scale this up on different models. Never thought new tech/ breakthrough would be in the subwoofer category.
@davelistenstohifi
@davelistenstohifi Год назад
Hey Doug, yes it for sure has a lot of promise, but im not sure it needs scaling up! The sound levels and impact were very impressive. Possibly another model that digs deeper might be useful, i had limited listening so i didnt hear everything it could do.

I'm from Montreal too....and i own the MG-12 Maggie's !!!! I put some good CARDAS plugs on it and pull out the fuses... and on back of each i have a SVS and PARADIGM powered subs.... the sound now is so crazy good !!!!!!!! :)

Hey KK, I'm so glad that you are happy with your system, you have achieved something that is elusive for so many audiophiles! I love the sound of the Maggies, I heard them first playing Fleetwood mac Dreams powered by a Levinson No. 23 in 1989, and it made such an impression on me, loved them since.

Sounds like mid-bass speakers that are not rolled off in the higher frequencies as much as their last subwoofer speaker. Not sure I would want another set of almost full range speakers sitting in non-balanced areas of the room where the bass is usually the best but not for other frequencies. Interested in hearing for myself.
@davelistenstohifi
@davelistenstohifi Год назад
Yes, integration with the main speakers seems to be a big concern for Magnepan with this product, so hopefully they have some innovative technology to assist with this. Interesting to see where this goes!

Magnepans while delivering fantastic sound stage have terrible WAF and are very finicky to be set up & amplified the right way. I ended using them with sustained plateau bias class A monoblocks, unfortunately they were terrible heavy and too much of heat produced when music is on still & speakers themselves should be placed some reasonable distance away from a wall which forms a fragile annoying obstacle in a room, can't be vacuum cleaned and being constantly worried about it is too much of a headache. Bass they delivered was never an issue for me, pipe organ recordings reproduction sounded absolutely fantastic. I am using fullrange DIY and several watts amp nowadays thanks to my previous Maggies experience.
@davelistenstohifi
@davelistenstohifi Год назад
Hi Antitrust, yes Magnepans can be a lot of trouble, the ones who really fall for the sound make it work for them! Full range, dipole and open baffle efficient speakers have a seductive sound as well, I'm just playing with a vintage set of coax Isophon speakers now and they are very interesting! Glad you found something that brings you joy.

What this could do for classical & strings Also maybe I could afford it. Interested to hear. Spatial cues might be able to be worked out.

Yes, with orchestral music you really get a better sense of space and room when you add the lowest frequencies in.

Multiple voice coils in the bass array are likely helping generate the perceived power of the system, without dynamic compression interference interfering with the overall sound quality.
@davelistenstohifi
@davelistenstohifi Год назад
Yes, that will do it, but i'm not sure how those many voice coils will treat the amplifier hooked up to them. The Schiit Vidar run in mono seemed quite capable thouugh.

@davelistenstohifi Год назад
Hey FOH, actually stunningly powerful regardless of the physical size. Strong impact and high sound levels created by this 'sub' were unexpected, and this was in a room with 15 people in it. I tried to get this level of sound impact when I got home that evening, I was pushing my 300W amp into my speakers with 3x12" bass drivers per side, and was having trouble getting the same impact.

C’mon man, everyone knows that they are like giant resistors that vibrate and make sound. Horrible speakers low impedance capacitor voltage suckers that load amplifier output stages.
@davelistenstohifi
@davelistenstohifi Год назад
Yes, i guess you are right, they can present a difficult load, but the bass units seem to be traditional drivers I believe.
@Secession1900

The new add-on woofers from Magnepan are not planar magnetic drivers but instead conventional woofers. No one outside of Magnepan has measured their sensitivity or impedance curve as they have not been put into production.
