Not hardening in the applicator is due to newer coating technology that allows them to be flexible as the panels expand and contract from heat, in theory giving them better longevity. In my test, this is one of the better ones initially so it looks promising for sure. I like that you get a big bottle for the price too.
A general commentary is that Meguiar’s makes more good products than they do bad ones, while something like Chemical Guys makes a ton ton ton of bad products than they do good ones.
Disagree; the ceramic detail wax spray (blue bottle) is great because it allows the user different ways to apply; also the quick detailer is easy to use and the extreme tire shine spray is the best for high gloss. I use the wax/cleaner when needed but their regular waxes do NOT stand up.
@@Gumshoe88 nothing CG makes is better than Meguiars in my findings. CG has become so saturated in marketing their stuff, they act like they invented car detailing products by overcharging for everything.
@@CapoKabar I agree CG is overrated and overpriced; my personal experience is that most of Megs products are good to great but their standard waxes are not up to par.
Glad to see you actually gave this one a fair shake. Given the fact that Meguiar's clearly knows how to make a quality coating, how about doing another video where you record the entire application process for UCC and do it how I explained it to you? Then re-test it and see if maybe was due to improper application and abnormally low temperature. As I explained to you during multiple phone calls and text messages, UCC is built to be ultra forgiving for first timers, and as a result it has a trade-off of a slower cure that is made even slower by cold (which is also true for real pro coatings, hence IR lamps). You applied and tested UCC when it was under 60 degrees for a week straight AND you also did not work it into the paint like I explained. That is why it didn't perform. It is a real coating, but it was tested like a sealant. Looking forward to that video.
I gave UCC a fair shake too. It just underperforms and that’s ok, as long as we know where it stands. Something called a spray coating should last much longer than a wash even if applied in less than completely ideal temperatures. M888 is great UCC is not good.
@@autodetailingpodcast I guess I will have to agree to disagree on that one. Truly disappointed, and I don't mean in the product. All told, I spent well an hour on the phone with you and exchanged numerous messages with you. You love to name drop me, but somehow forgot to include ANYTHING we actually discussed about how you improperly applied it and how the cold was a factor. Also quite interesting that you didn't include the application in this video when I know you recorded it because you sent it to me privately and I told you what you did wrong. Really bummed about how you went about this whole thing, honestly. ESPECIALLY after you go around making videos complaining about the lack of innovation and transparency in the industry post-SEMA, and when I spend over an hour explaining to you how and why UCC is both wildly innovative (more than meets the eye) AND finally an HONEST, REAL true cross-linking spray coating (the only one in retail I am aware of), but you chose to not mention ANY of that. I also explained in detail how and why this first-of-its-kind formula allowed for incredibly forgiving wipe-off windows that are not found in normal true coatings - you never even mentioned ANY of that. If nothing else, at least I now know why you wouldn't give me an answer on my offer to come down to the HQ, get a tour and direct access to the lab to discuss the product prior to doing your video.
I'm so happy to see this review. I was starting to think you weren't gonna do it. My bottle came in this past Monday. I can't wait to apply it to my truck!! Thanks for the great review!
@tacticalofficer6103 Griots 6.5 inch red waxing pad. You can find them in local part store like autozone, then use sharp razor to cut it as your desired size.
Super happy that meguiar's have finally created a real durable ceramic coating!, I love the brand, and I can't wait to be able to test it and with the addition of toppers like meguiar's ultimate ceramic coating, meguiar's hybrid ceramic wax, or like any other ceramic coating that I tested we loved Meguiar's M799 pro hybrid ceramic bead booster as topper!
Jimbo, you gotta fix your lighting. You look mighty creepy with the bronze skin tone and your eyes look almost yellowish white. Stuff of nightmares! 😂 Good to see they finally released a coating that looks promising! I do really like their Hybrid Paint Coating too. Amazing 12+ month coating for the price point.
A lot of us have a soft spot for Meguiars and I am happy to see this coating is similar to their aerosol coating. Your acid product looks like a winner too! Thank you for a cool video!
I have about 4 cans of fast finish in my garage, kept buying it on sale in winter from walmart for dirt cheap. Might not be the best but like a lot of their stuff, it works, it's affordable, and is it's easy to get,.
I had no problem dropping them after several torture tests. I have some bottles of quick detailer I used to use when drying the car, but outside of that I may use some interior spray from them.
JB goes full Heisenberg on the hood at 21:07 I can tell he has spent a lot of time in the desert in the RV....just look at his face at 0:19. If his next video is sponsored by Los Pollos Hermanos, I am out of here! Just kidding JB, keep up the content. It is helpful to see other coating options and how they apply/perform.
Jimbo, I loved your tests, reason for coatings not hardening is that before you needed a PPF coating, a Trim coating and a Paint coating that hardens, now with the same coating you can coat all surfaces with the same bottle. Coatings are still giving thickness, 9H hardness (if that is a thing), gloss, slickness but are flexible enough to be installed on PPF, Trim and Clear Coat. Hope that helps.
Have you tried Meguire's solo 1 M300 yet ? That product is amazing. Kind of made their other products obsolete when it comes to defect removal or polishing ! Now they have this M888 , I think they hit everything out of the park with these products
I haven’t tired it yet. Mainly because they had that product out in about 2008 and I tried it then. It’s good. But I prefer 3D one or even system 51 (csi) - meguairs copied system 51 back in the day with that whole solo stuff and it kinda rubbed me the wrong way
@@autodetailingpodcast this one's new for 2024 solo 1 and it says has si2 the m300 one .. I used it for the first time today it's very smooth. Long working time , No dust , ridiculously easy to wipe off and I live here in Vegas or it's 108° today under a carport with no streaks ! Fyi
Looks like it holds up great! I’d be curious about Undrdog Pro or Pro +. Also, I REALLY want to see Mastersons products just to see if it’s any good. I have my doubts like many, but it’d be for science. lol
Great video. Have you ever tried Nasiol NL272 or what do you think the best cost no object coating is right now? I know yours is still in the works. Enjoying Hard as Shell so far.
Thanks for the support. Not sure on the best because I always assumed they would all pass a torture test. I think Nasiol makes some very good coatings. I’ve been happy with them
7 day cure time?! Im not sure this would be good for shop use if you had to tell clients you needed their vehicle for 7 days. Also, its hard for anyone to go 7 days without their car.
I just placed an order for both your Products Jimbo yesterday ( very excited ) If I was to use this product M888 first.. Let it cure 7 days Should I go over it with Your product Hard as shell for added protection?? Will this make the product last longer?? give it more hydrophobic properties?.. Thankyou!
7 day cure is only if you’re going to torture test it. It can get rained on within an hour. So spray wipe and enjoy unless you’re going to spray chemicals on it right away.
So I notice most if not all reviews show the torture test with a water hose and sprayer vs the pressure washer so I’m curious if the pressure washer and a strip soap would make this coating fail. I’m going to try the graphene spray by Adam’s to try it and see how well it works but I did watch your older video.
I just have always used the garden hose for torture test so I try to keep that part of it consistent. Sometimes IMO a pressure washer is too much power and doesn't give an accurate read on the product.
I'm looking at the comments... No one is talking about the 7 DAYS TO CURE!!! I guess this will be applied either by owners DIYers... But if keeping a car 24h was challenging I can't imagine 7days. If I missed something please let me know. I know that here in FL... It is absolutely Impossible to avoid the car being 100% wet without rain... Just due to morning dew.
I think ceramic coatings are over rated. If you can buy hard as shell for $35, no matter what, you have to do a decon on the paint before you apply it. If you go through all of that and have to decon it say in 6 months to apply a “topper”, it’s just cheaper in the long run to apply another layer of hard as shell. The coatings that are rated for 2 or 3 years, you have to “maintain” them. Again, decon and add a layer. With a ceramic coating, you have to maintain the car just as much as without. Tar, construction, weather, pollutants are still in the air and will stick. Just my 2 cents.
Because it totally depends on how you maintain it, whether it's garaged, etc. If they say 3 years and you maintain it well and it lasts 6 great. But if you never wash it, or if you take it through a high ph touchless car wash every day and never top it with anything and it only lasts 2 years you'll be pissed even though that's good performance.
This coating looks like a nice product Jim. Off topic, I wanted to let you know that I put your Hard as Shell on my wife's van 2 weeks ago. Weather hasn't been terrible here in Chicago but not good either. No washes, daily driven and it still looks great. Probably going to wash next weekend (Mar. 9th-10th 2024) and I am hoping really curious to see how well the hydrophobics hold up. Disclaimer: No, I do not know him, work for him, or are affiliated with him in any way. I paid for his product and giving my honest opinion about it.
right on, customers should expect a quality product for the money. to be perfectly honest, ive gotten to the point if i am disappointed in a product, or dont feel ive gotten a decent return on my money, im done with the company who sold it, forever. ill take a good product for a fair price all day long, sell me over priced junk once, and its over.
Happy to see this from Meguiars! Could you do a quick followup to this test with maybe 1-2 days of curetime? I dont think I would ever be able to let it cure for the full 7 days as my car has to be on the road almost every day..
Glad to see Meguiar's coating is working like it should. I'll likely won't buy it as the local distributor marks everything up too much, but I'm still a fan.
Excellent review. The torture tests proved how resilient the M888 is! With a price point like this, I believe that this will create nice market for weekend warriors to explore DIY at home applications. Looking forward to more of your content. Cheers from Canada 👍
FYI... The M888 has a 20% off clip coupon on Amazon ended up getting it for $70.. Just bought it and will coat this weekend and back it up with the Hard as Shell when it arrives.. hopefully soon!!!
It worries me to hear you say that about really slick coatings. I applied Hard as Shell last night and told myself it's the slickest coating I've used. I guess time will tell.
Not to worry about HAS - it’s tried and true. The materials are a little different then they are in solvent based wipe on coatings. Glad you’re enjoying it.
Are people really complaining about $100 coating? 50 ml could probably do 3 sedans or two larger SUV’s. As always thanks for the thorough review jimbo!
People will always find something to complain about. IMO this product is a huge win and you’re 100% right. I think you could easily do 3 cars with this.
Been waiting on this one review. I pre-ordered this stuff as soon as it was announced and received the bottle back in December. I trust you, Pan, and Apex when it comes to product testing. Now I will go ahead and apply this to my vehicles.
Great video! I’m new to the detailing world and have been enjoying your content. It seems Meguiars has already put a discount on the M888. It’s on sale for $81 now.
The Amazon watch and wait continues. Have you come up with a release date for your products to drop on Amazon? You're 20 minutes from me in HB but I prefer the convenience of Amazon. Great Torture test review for Meguiars!
@@autodetailingpodcast I'll use the code. I'm in Huntington Beach but know you have a business to run. Actually across the street from the Westminster Mall off Bolsa.
The problem I have with meguiar's Inc. is that it's owned by 3m now so it's not a meguiar's anymore they just use the meguiar's name development now comes from 3m according to Google and news releases
3m bought Meguiars 16 years ago...... (2008) So, there's that. With that said, 3m was no stranger to car products having produced some of the best rubbing compounds and polishes for many decades. Certainly the M888 and recent products have all been designed and tested under the highly competent 3M umbrella.
It’s super easy to apply and was a favorite for a little bit. But I’ve never put it in a test. Before the Cerakote attempt at a coating I just assumed they would all pass. So I’ve had to rethink that
@@autodetailingpodcast I actually think it'd be a great video to do! A revisit to well known coating that alot people/Detailers know and love! Also I love your channel and honesty dude!
@@autodetailingpodcast cool I have a 39 sedan with 20 yr old fixing dents and touch up the owner is having cut the car and buff clearcoat had shrunk back alot
I recently installed a ceramic coating on my new car, can I apply this on top and have the same durability? Or I need to take all the ceramic coating and install this?
You could do either but they would prob recommend to strip and then apply this if you want maximum benefits. But if you’re not worried about maxing it out you will be fine going over top IMO.
23:30 Hi Jim I am in the UK loving your Chanel, the Meguiars M888 looks absolutely amazing but can’t seem to find it here in the UK even your link to Amazon just comes up with a Meguires wax. Any ideas where I can order it from in the USA or even from yourself thanks. Paul.
as to the comments that start at 15:22, in marketing it is the unattainable triad (or triangle): price/quality/convenience (speed). You can't deliver all three better than everyone else for an extended period of time.
