£31000 for a second hand car that is low spec who would even consider that kind of money, you also neglect that the mg second-hand you could get for around £18000( top of the range) basically don't buy any new car buy a three year old one you will feel much happier when you don't lose fifteen thousand pounds in three years!!!
Exactly this, I can’t quite believe the price in the video seeing as we picked our pre-face lift 2022 MG5 for less than 20k why 10k more for essentially the same car with a different front end & a bigger infotainment system.
Most 2nd hand enyaqs are basic model, so rapid charging restricted to 50kw, no heat pump no heated steering wheel, no heated seats no vehicle to load and no rear view camera. It does have better load space, passenger space and better towing capability at 1000 Kg. Also quieter at speed.
I guess motoring journos must be a lot more leaden footed than me. Had a fairly basic 60 Enyaq for 17 months - only addition is drive modes and regen paddles and I am getting 3.6m/kwh in winter and averaging 4.3 this summer, and no, I don't drive like Miss Daisy is in the back seat!
I got a better deal and kept my 12 year old mazda and put the money i saved from looking cool (not) in a high interest savings account for my retirement .
Majority of car journalists , throw figures of £400 & £ 500 PM like if that's good , How many people in this economy can think about waisting £ 400 / 500 a month 😢 A few million ,can't pay bills or put food on the table,
"They both cost around 400-500 a month on a PCP deal so the monthly costs aren't too bad" calm down Scrooge McDuck, not all of us have a vat of gold to swim around in!
@@morganangel340 sure but 400-500 a month for a budget brand new car or a used lower end brand entry level model car is a pretty sad situation we find ourselves in. You'd hope either car could be had for 200 -300 a month tops, 400-500 feels like it should get you into at least mid range brand like VW or Toyota if not a cheaper model from Audi or BMW
@@JetsetDruid sorry to break it to you, but VW and Toyota are not mid range with EV's = they suck. ID4 is an expensive junk, and Toyota is worse. even Audi and BMW are not leading the charge when ir comes to EVs Audi E-tron GT was cucked by a mg4 xpower that cost less than half price. get with the program the world is changing
@@morganangel340 regardless of your subjective ratings of different brands and there rankings my point stands - the monthly costs are way too high given how mundane the two vehicles are
If like me you needed to get rid of your diesel car due to ULEZ and want an EV but don’t have 30K or 20K even then from 14K you can get a 2019 onwards eGolf. It’s not a long range car by any means at 130 miles, but for driving round town it’s excellent.
I bought a used 1st Edition ID.3 with less than 12,000 miles for less than the price of the cheapest new MG4. The only real problem has been the piece of human excrement who smashed the drivers door window whilst it was parked up last week. 🙁 Try getting replacement glass. I've had to buy from a dismantler and will be fitting it this coming weekend.
I'd go a new hybrid vehicle rather than any EV... But the Enyaq rather than the MG... Any buyer who can't charge at home is best avoiding an EV.... Big vehicle with no rear camera - a bit crap...
The government needs to really pull its finger out and install adequate on-street charging if it wants people to choose EVs. Where I live we have pretty good on-street charging but in big chunks of the country its non-existent.
I didnt realise anywhere had on street charging. Ive only ever seen chargers at supermarket car parks and motorway services. Nowhere near me has it. We waited three years just for the potholes in our road to be filled. .@@ewdack
I saved more and I've got a used Jaguar I-Pace with extended warranty. A dream to drive, insurance is a bit pricey though. I guess 0-60 in 4.5s does that.....
Electricity on chargers now costs more then ordinary fuel for same mileage and of course for 20-25 liters of fuel you need 30-40 seconds for refuel it and on chargers 45-60+minutes if it is fast to 100% and of course buying used electric car are high risky because of possible dying batteries and new one costs as half car
Dunno where you live but have to be expensive electric or cheap gasoline that your claim works. Used EV has factory battery warrant if not driven too much or too old so no risk at all. FYI you don't fast charge EV to 100% because it take so much more time, till 80% you get around 30 min but that last 20% will take another 30 min.
Used car with the nagging thought, why did they bin it? MG has 7 year warranty, and ALL the toys. Both are still way overpriced. Looking at MG ZS EV vs ICE £14,000 price difference, so if you consider a autobox new would cost £6,000 Engine £2,500. so take them off a ZS ICE price then that makes Battery and Motor cost nearly £23,000 It's a con.
I'm surprised you guys desided to compare old with new EV?. Both cars parent companies are well known VW group and SIAC Motor China. Actually SIAC Motor (MG owner) is producing Skoda, Audi and VW in China and holds 50% of the venue there. I'm telling you this because you count Skoda as a premium brand. It's not. The fact that Mg5 has better efficiency, V2L and few regen levels speaks for better EV technology. 360 camera, MG Pilot and better software are prons for the chinase brand. Lastly VW Audi is buying EV platforms from SIAC, because there platforms are total failure and officially there is custumer resistance to get VW cars. This is the reason VW gives 0% APR at the moment. I'm not sure why why your channel is not working in the customer's interest and is promoting failing brands instead. For example MD4 is 2nd best selling EV UK because 1st is Tesla. Information is all around us guys. You cannot mislead use anymore. Regards
Between those two? Skoda superb 1.5l TSI. Reviewers praising electric cars nowadays soud exactly the same like the ones a few years ago praising diesel cars.
250 miles... WOW ! Woopy-doo I've just done 860 miles in my 17 year old A6 diesel estate and not hit reserve... And it only cost me the equivalent of 3 monthly payments for both of the above to buy outright. Like to see both of these do the same journey anywhere near as quick, easy and as cheap (motorway charging is NOT cheap) and I can use my heater, radio, open the windows, lights etc and plug into my car anything and not affect the distance.. Buy an e.v.... NO THANKS.
If ‘80’, yeah - Skoda. But for me, a used ‘60’ low spec wouldn’t beat a new MG5(LR). Now, if MG give 5 the new ‘extended range’ 323-mile spec the MG4 is getting, then that makes MG virtually unbeatable in sub-£40k sector!
I’ve “lost” 6 miles of range over 15 months and 50,000 miles and that’s on a model 3 that is rapid charged to 100% all the time. So I really don’t think that there is anything to worry about on degradation…
I can't see that £400 to £500 is OK / affordable..... especially on PCP meaning it is not yours!! I would strongly suggest looking at LEASING. Both of these have dodgy infotainment. VW have plenty of stock, so leasing a brand new Skoda could even work out cheaper...!!
We've had a used MG ZS EV for 6 months. It's been OK - almost a great car, but enough annoying flaws to matter. Definitely a head-over-heart buying decision. Has plenty of power but prone to spinning front wheels in damp conditions, even with high end all-season tyres. Similar story in the MG5 I had a test drive in at Fully Charged Live. I also had a test drive in the Enyaq. It was OK but just a bit dull compared to the Zoe we used to have. That said, I wouldn't buy another MG.
@@whocares264 of course - just drive with a lighter right foot. But I'd argue that a car with more power than its wheels and suspension can handle lacks refinement. And that's generally how I'd describe the car as a whole - good value but lacking refinement.
Lol I couldn’t think of a worse reason to dislike any EV or high torque front wheel drive car. We picked up an MG5 2022 pre-face lift for half the cost of the Enyaq, stunning car to drive, just no comparison or complaints.
A very interesting comparison Vicky. A new v used car. I've not driven either but I have sat in a few Enyaq models. Given that there is a lot more data available on the Enyaq being the older car this should be taken into account for an informed view. The VW group infotainment is a bit hit and miss to say the least and not just on the EV models, hopefully VW will feed the SW engineers some clever morsels and they can fix it at some point. One thing that is worth considering is what the retail price was at the point of first sale for the Skoda, if it was greater than that magic £40K then there is that extra burden of a significant road tax hike for the first 5 years regardless if you got it used. That threshold is based on the RRP including any factory fit options at point of initial sale. This possibly plays into the MG cars favour. Many thanks for sharing.
@@darrenwallis7630 I know what 'luxury car tax' is. It is a surcharge on the Vehicle Excise Duty for cars that emit more than 150 grams of CO2 per kilometer. It applies to cars that cost £40,000 or more when new. Why are you suggesting that will be retrospectively charged to used EVs? 🙄
@@FFVoyager Apologies my bad. After looking for cars recently for a family member we were careful to check the original list price was not the greater than 40K for the extra tax, this currently does not apply to an EV. I got confused.
500 pound a month are they taking the piss, who can afford this, never mind all the crap that comes with ownership, range anxiety, waiting hours to change, and then driving it a lot slower than a ice car, you can stick the lot of them all a complete rip off, what a load of BS, ps don't forget the massive fire hazards.
Those who are working for a living, traded in a used car and have saved up for a small deposit AND have a good credit rating. They are the car users that will afford this including myself. 'Range Anxiety' is resolved by having a home charger, using an APP to plan your long journeys. You don't wait 'hours to charge' - you only charge up to 80% if on a long journey - the extra 20% takes too long and can be acheived on cheaper rate night charging at home. My EV drives a lot faster than the ice car I had - in fact I ensure it does the speed limit everywhere I go because it now comes with adaptive cruise control as standard. As for fire hazards I've never seen one go on fire yet - the last fire I was aware of was from a petrol car in a car park.
I drive a small EV and have a diesel estate for family stuff. I would love an EV estate/SUV but £32k is still way too much. I’d much rather get a Dacia Jogger for £20k that has all the room I need and most of the features these 2 have.
£400 to £500 pounds per month on PCP. What world are you living in. You talk of £30,000 plus as being not a great deal of money but to most people it’s way out of their reach. It’s about time EV car prices become more realistic to the average U.K. person, then maybe you would see a higher uptake in the EV market. Of course we must think about the public charger network all of which are in the hands of 14 or so private companies who are NOT answerable to the U.K. Government so they can site as many or as little of chargers anywhere in the U.K.
We picked up a pre-face lift 2022 MG5 for 10k less than your review version!! The differences are minimal unless you love the new front end, for the value for money it was an absolute no brainier. The car is amazing to drive, the MG dealership problem though is true, it’s a complete lottery..
Personally dont think theres such thing as a used EV bargain. Depreciation on these things is completely unquantifiable. Buy a 1 year old Tesla M3 now for c.20k, sure its 50% off, but what on earth will it be worth at 3 years old. Biggest problem with these at the moment is the ability to get them fixed outside of a main dealer network, that community is building slowly but its a long way off where it needs to be for most to take on ownership of an EV outside of warranty. I was genuinely intrigued at the prospect of a 20k nearly new Tesla but getting it fixed would be the issue. Theres nowhere for me to take it locally and my nearest Tesla service centre is 45 miles away 😂. I know they have mobile mechanics but 9 times out of 10 they wont be able to fix an issue. Sadly these things really are only worth leasing for the moment, but again that results in you being tied into an expensive agreement for a few years that you cant extract yourself out of easily if you needed to. Getting one through a work salary sacrifice scheme is probably the safest way to get into one if you really must.
Why are you not comparing like for like, used MG vs used Skoda. Not wothstanding this, unless I missed it, noention that the MG has a 7yr 80k mile warranty vs the Skodas 3yr 60k mile warranty which wont even be that long when purchasing used.
Ask an mg dealer for a new car pre registered by mg uk. I bought my mg5 pre facelift for £22 and it came with 4 years free servicing and 7 year warranty all because it was a 72 plate not a 23 with delivery miles of 100
An interesting back-to-back comparison, Vicky. Just funny how you've clearly decided to dissolve your 'dictatorship' since you went and chose the car WITHOUT heated front seats...!! 🤣
I would wait 1/3 of the 2020 cars released so far have not sold there is another 12,000 cars r that come to the end of there contract. Next year 190,000 cars become available there will be some very cheap cars. I can’t see PCP rates holding at current monthly rates if up take is poor next year 2025 rates could easily double.
Battery degradation is not linear and it is important to note this. At around 3 years of average life, an EV battery would have lost most of the range it will ever go on to lose. Degradation will then pretty much stop. It is IMPORTANT to report this.
Good review. EVs are definitely improving, but still just that niggly bit less ability than ICE cars, and at a premium cost too. In my view I'll hold onto my PHEV a couple more years before making the leap to fully electric. Too many question marks over depreciation, and compromises on range, versus inadequate charging infrastructure. Latest battery tech (from CATL) going into 2024 Teslas is quite a leap forward too, worth waiting for!
So this is a new car vs a used car? what about used to used? The prices at time of comment is £10,000 more for a second hand skoda vs a second hand mg 5.
The Skoda is lovely, but personally, I'd like the peace of mind of a 7 year warranty of the MG5, and the boot is still plenty big enough for most use cases.
The warranty includes AA cover. However, in order to keep the warranty running you have to service the car at the MG garage which is OK so you essentially have 7 years of worry free motoring.
Warranties on EV's are usually rubbish anyway. Usually they only repair battery cells up to an expected with age storage capacity with degredation and usually only at their discretion, they don't give you a new battery unless it is a total write off.
@@stevezodiac491not true. Maybe use evidence. In general most evs have a 8 year better than 70% on the battery. You don't get that on an ice engine like when your cam belt breaks. The remaining stuff has the same warranty as ice cars. Like hundai and kia have 7 years. Then of course if you get a Tesla there is real data that shows that their batteries have better than 90% after 100k and will do 200 300k miles
The 7 year warranty with MG isn't across the board. The infotainment system for example is only 3 years. That been said most the really expensive stuff is covered by the 7 year warranty.
My little brother has owned Enyaq over 2 month and he can't understand why people whine so much about infotainment. Everything works, it might be slow sometimes or some weird things happens but he doesn't think it's problem at all especially when car itself is amazing.
Since fw 3.0 I had no issue at all. Own my car for more than a year and drove it 21000 kilometers. The user interface is snappy enough and quite logical to use.
In March 2023 we bought a 27 month old, 11,800 mile ID.3 1st Edition instead of a new MG4. The ID.3 with the 58.2 useable kWh battery cost less than ghe cheapest MG4. The MG4 base model is nowhere near as refined or comfy and practical as the ID.3. We have no regrets.
They're very different cars. The MG5 is Astra sized, and the Skoda Enyaq is Range Rover sized. The Enyaq will be more comfortable and much roomier, and the quality is on another planet in comparison to the MG. That said, the MG's value for money is in another league in comparison to the Skoda. Yer pays yer money etc...... Being able to ask the dealer for an OBD battery health check is useful, and helps to offset any potential risk.
I'm not an "oil industry stooge" I am an EV owner - Audi E-tron 50 Technik which I bought new in 2020, and here are my good / bad / ugly real world experiences and thoughts. First off, do I like the car? yes, very much, I love the way it drives, and can find very little that I don't like about it. Will I be buying another EV? (I will be changing the car this year at 3 years old) An emphatic no I will not, certainly not until the charging infrastructure is vastly improved. So, here we go, I was told by Audi that the range of the car was 193 miles on a full charge, that turned out to be untrue, the most I have ever been able to get out of it was around 165 miles in the summer, in winter that goes down to more like 130 miles, and the charge time increases. I hear Tesla fans saying "should have bought a Tesla" sorry, I wouldn't buy a Tesla for a couple of reasons, I just don't like them, I think they are ugly, I hate the interior with that huge iPad type screen, and (not from personal experience, but from speaking to several Tesla owners while waiting at charging stations) questionable build quality. I would say that over 30 months of ownership, I have wasted more than 600 hours of my life (an hour a day 5 days a week) hanging around at charging stations waiting for my car to have sufficient range to complete my journey - I travel the country in the course of my business. "Should have planned your journey more carefully" I hear you cry, believe me I do plan as carfully as possible, yes I use ZapMap, that oh so useful app that forgets to tell you that a charging station is not working, or that your planned charge point is occupied by other drivers wasting more hours of their lives. Why do I need to download different apps for different charge points? when I used to stop for petrol or diesel, I could fill up in a couple of minutes, and pay with contactless card. I didn't care too much about the weather either, if it was pouring with rain I could fill up under the shelter of a huge forecourt canopy, I have lost track of the number of times I have been soaked while waiting for the charger to authorise the charge, why are all the charge points out in the open? Finally, cost, I have a home charger which is fine, marginally cheaper than ICE fuel, on the road charging is at least equal, and in many cases more expensive than ICE fuel. One minor point, I have probably negated any potential cost savings with the money I wouldn't normally have spent buying service area cups of overpriced coffee.
@@neilspare9597 There are things wrong in that comment. I just don't know how you were getting ripped off with home charging - mine is 10x less than diesel Passat that did 55-60 mpg. I pay 7p/unit for night charging (up from 5p 2 years ago - and falling in price again), and I also have solar too. I agree with the apps - FSI for corporate control - chargers are finally nearly all cash pay now - but unlike petrol/diesel where people power complain at price, 85p unit is stupid and gouging for electric. I pay 40p/unit at Tesla superchargers. (I don't have a problem if you don't like Tesla cars - but they are forcing the requirements of range/charge speed). The Audi etron was not a good introduction to EV cars - one of the worst efficiency of all EV (see EV real world figures), and the early charge rates were bonkers crap. I am sorry you were put off, just avoid Audi for now for EV cars, they are just not acceptable. Finally, apart from a crap passat, I come from a long line of car ownership starting with a Morris marina in 1980, and included a T5 volvo, and I am happy with my EV, best car I ever had.
@@neilspare9597Excellent real world information 👍 and agree on Tesla cars for me they are way too bland looking, having zero buttons and all touch screen while your driving is plant silly and i have also heard a few stories about poor build quality.
After my 7 years 5 months experience with EV's, I wouldn't buy either car here. All EV's are flawed by battery degredation and loss of range with time and use cycles as all lithium ion batteries do, as I know to my own cost, through dendrite formation, which does not occur whatsoever, on ice vehicles. There is the massive financial depreciation on either vehicle compared to an ice vehicle also and the very poor range and abysmal charging infrastructure. Knowing what I know now, I wouldn't touch any EV with a barge pole ever again.
By that 7 year and battery degradation i guess you have experience from Nissan Leaf and it's common problem for it because it doesn't have thermal management on battery. No heating nor cooling.
Hi Vicky Went on a very short test run around a city centre last year, salesman drove as he was collecting me from a hire car drop off and the acceleration on the Skoda was breathtaking away from traffic lights and I agree with you about the seating position.Still would not have an EV, waiting for it to be charged if you are on a run....are other road users... walkers cyclists aware of you? Petrol any day Regards. Crawford
Ever heard of VESS?? Mandatory on all Hybrids and EVs since 2019 in the UK… Kia Hybrids and EVs also have extremely loins reversing sounds while Tesla’s sound like spaceships. So no need to worry about cyclists and pedestrians hearing your EV…
If you are a logical person, have there been massive amounts of accidents involving EVs? How are we, millions out there coping and living with EVs? Been road tripping throughout Europe and Nordic countries without any issues.
Petrol is great for creating toxic air pollution that produces particulate matter which causes hundreds of thousands of premature human deaths in Europe, every year. Every year. And it contributes to climate change.
All same. All largely new and upto date motoring. At this level. Grey EV. VS Grey used EV. Both do similar job/s. Personal Preference. Monthlies. Errrr insurance. Boot. Errrr. Basic spec Skoda folding mirrors reversing sensors. Total poverty spec. How nasty … Not even a 23 inch screen and the BMW 7 style drop down rear TV and foot rests. How we going to get to around in these basic robust cars.
A great comparison. However, would you rather support the Chinese or the VW Group? Until the Chinese allow their citizens to vote and establish a bill of rights, I wouldn't give any of them a dime.
SAIC the Chinese parent of MG is also the largest manufacturer of VW cars............. The next generation of Audi EV's will be using MG platforms........
