NEW! Monte How to Square the clubface with your ROTATION | Golf

I went down to Oak Creek in Irvine, CA to talk to Monte Scheinblum about a golf swing concept he talks about
Monte says in great players you see the hips bump, the arms work out and down and then the rotation of the body squares the clubface. it is explained better in the video.
Monte talks a lot about the left arm providing a lot of speed, he is talking about the 3d golf systems like my swing that show which parts of the body are accelerating. I don't necessarily agree that the left arm out provides the speed (I have been on more of a right arm thing) but it is a great bench mark of weather you are sequencing correctly.

To those who responded. This is one way, not the way. I have several right side intent videos. "No turn cast drill.""Lead with the right elbow." You have to figure out which one works for you. They produce the same results.

To be fair, you made it sound like it was THE way. I was already about to say that that is just one of a couple ways that works just fine.

Personally I would like to hear a lot more about your thoughts on the left arm as it relates to speed and long drives. Over the last few months I have been focusing more on right arm dominance but feel the "effortless power" comes by letting the left arm play a more active role towards the end of the downswing. The easiest yet fastest swing for me comes from re-attaching the right elbow to the trunk (while my back is still facing the target) before firing the hips at which time the right hand and forearm is throwing the club head towards the ground (i.e. your "dump". I am not throwing the club head towards the ball, but rather parallel to the target line at 180 degrees to the target), *but* then allowing the left arm to become more active and pull through and whip the club head through the ball. The whipping action happens as the hands are behind the ball, but as the hips turn towards the target, by the time the club head reaches the ball the hands are in front of the ball producing plenty of shaft lean, and an effortless swing by allowing gravity and centrifugal force to do their bit. (all this obviously happens in split second)

Oh holy SH*T!! This is going to end up being a very long comment, but I have to detail it out to share how I put this last little drill into action with absolutely game altering results. One thing I’ve learned clearly, before using any drill, feel,if it’s working a bit for you and then BURN IT IN before making it part of your full swing regimen. It really works keeping to this methodology. So I’ve been trying to employ a number of different drills to help organize my swing that have definitely helped. BUT…. That “drop your arms to the check point, then fire” drill is a TOTAL game changer when explained EXACTLY the way Monte did. I did this about 50 times with no ball in the front yard and then went to the range. I warmed up with this a bit and then added the ball. Hit half a bucket with the same check and fire drill sequence. Now it was time to alternate full strokes with the check and fire. The full swing results were INCREDIBLE!!! But I resisted going into all full swings until that bucket of 100 balls was gone. Took a 2 hour lunch break and came back for another bucket. Did the “drop, check, fire drill” (as I now call it) a few times and went right to full swings with my 7 iron. I have never hit that ball so consistently with such incredible compression with such little effort. That has blown me away and totally transformed my swing. My biggest changes that have had the most dramatic impact are, I changed to a baseball type 10 finger grip to feel the stability and it made a huge difference, and now this drill. What an amazing improvement in so many ways. One drill. One dang drill, LOL!!! Needless to say Monte, I owe you a big thank you for this one!!! 👍🏻😎👍🏻

I've seen dozens of videos on how to prevent "getting stuck", but this one resonates with me the loudest. I was taught to "swing with my body", which inevitably led to me spinning my torso too quickly and leaving my hands and arms behind me. Once I started to re-incorporate my arms into the downswing a lot of my impact and accuracy issues started to go away.

Monte, your "No turn cast drill" and the elbow towards the belly button was the start of me getting my golf game back after years of trying to swing from the ground up, hips turn, pulling the right shoulder around and trying to hold lag, resulting in disaster swings....very grateful to you and for Brenden who who put these videos on the map for me.

what a great drill! heck with the drill this is the way to swing.. drop it in the slot and just turn. A short swing was the only way I could do that and it was still difficult to time it correctly. monte's swing advice with the trail elbow is golden. i kept hooking, slicing, pulling all sorts of shots and didn't realize it was my right elbow being stuck behind and pointing away from my body on the downswing. tried it out and i've been striping it ever since! very different feel though so have to get used to it.

"Your hands and arms aren't passive even when you run"...Monte Great observation. This is a great lesson, and for a while--while I still do try to release with my body--I used so much body and got the hands to ride along that I had no idea where my hands were. You can't play golf that way. Again, great lesson and thanks for posting.

Monte changes what he's talking about without telling you. Sometimes he's speaking of mechanics. Sometimes he's speaking of something he wants you to do, knowing it will have a different mechanical effect than it sounds. The no turn cast drill is an example. Real vs. Feel. Essentially, I trust him as an instructor and just try to do what he says.

@richardj6593
@richardj6593 7 лет назад
I know Malaska swing method very well and I watch all of Monte's videos. Of course they don't teach exactly the same and there are major differences. What I was referring to was Malaska and Monte both saying the arms play huge role in the speed of the club. Also, Monte uses an arc like Malaska to get the club out front of the hands early in the swing to prevent the club getting stuck. These are two concepts that are not in the same vein as most teaching and the ideas are shared by both Monte and Malaska. Both instructors say arms and hands are not passive in the swing which is atypical for most teachers. They both say arms play a huge role in swing. They both quote Nicklaus saying keep back target as long as possible. They both say arms should link at the chest and ten fire. Both Monte and Malaska say to get arms right and body pivot will fall in place but if you lead with body, it is hard to get hands and arms in the right place. Both Monte and Malaska say club face should stay square to the target and do not roll arms over in the swing. The only big difference is Monte says fire left arm out and forward and Malaska says keep hands in and heel of club fires out.

Have found a way to eliminate over the top and hit the ball very straight and solid that works for me. The method enables me to start the downswing from a shoulders turned back position and keep the left shoulder down through impact. The forward weight shift is just a result of this simple move. I first started using this visualization for tee shots. Instead of thinking about hitting the ball I tried forgetting about the ball and hitting the tee under it, with the leading edge of the club. This worked so well that I also started using the same visualization for all shots on the ground with great success. My downswing thought is a very simple one...related to the left pec....PEC BELOW BALL. I know it sounds like a recipe for hitting everything fat but he results might surprise you like they did me.

Monte has a lot of good info, I almost signed up for his weekend school. However, when I try to get too "fast" with my lead arm, I end up "pulling" my shaft and club face across the ball, usually with an open face, which leads to a lot of slices. When I use more of the Hogan approach of the feeling of "skipping a stone over water" with the rear arm... I get a more in to out path, and draws. It might not actually be what's happening, but that's the "feeling" I feel in my swing.

Hi Brendon, thank you for all the great work you are doing. I believe Monte is right. When my right elbow does not come forward but to the side, then the right arm will separate from the left arm which is not good. (somehow When you pull the club down, your elbow is very likely not come forward towards the belt buckle). However, to do this, one still needs to turn the hips first. I would be happy to hear your thoughts. Thank you.

Very different approach from Malaska's A method, interesting. Malaska's methode is more focuses on the momentum of the club and less on the swing sequence. Monte is more like : - put your elbow in the right spot - rotate your body to finish (without having to think about your hands good spot too much) and Malaska is more like : - feel the weight of the club (gravity) - direct the momentum of the club in front of you (at the ball) (whitout having to pull your hands ands arms towards the target) - and rotate as an effect of the gravity trying to push you out of you swing arc (whitout having to think about it)

Monte is 100% on point in this video. But here's the rub, actually getting to the correct position(s) to be able to allow your pivot to square the club face. The attempt to illustrate the "how" with the drill falls short. You can tell that Monte isn't convinced by the way Brenden performs the drill. Okay, Monte admits that it's more complicated than what can be covered in a short video, and he does hint at it by mentioning the left shoulder and arm. But the mystery remains, HOW?! Wait for it...with a LEFT SHOULDER LOAD. It's not too complicated, but difficult to write about. All the elite players I've come in contact with do it, but strangely it's out of the realm of most teaching professionals. No doubt It's akin to a 'secret'. The shoulder load is a pulling motion by the upper left arm and shoulder, followed by a deceleration of the left shoulder, and a resulting whipping action of the arms and hands down close to impact. From here, the pivot takes over, and we see a horizontal turn of the right shoulder and a separation from the head, which stays back for a brief moment before moving into the finish.

Appreciate the thoughts, I've struggled with driver fighting a hook, driving is now a strength to my game but looking for more controlled distance now. Struggled with this, I seem to prefer turning with the thought of keeping the right elbow below the left and once turned giving it everything I got through the ball, keeping the club square as long as possible. I found it easier to move shoulders and hips are at the same time with core strength. Keeping it fluid with nice temp is hard so I count it 1,2, 3 through the swing in practice. 1 backswing 2 rotate to hitting zone 3 power through the hitting zone. Key for me is opening up the clear path in front of my body to power through with good tempo and speed. Again appreciate the vids, been a great help always looking to learn more.

I have followed you for a while now and I have seen you improve and I too am always trying to improve and want your personal feed back on which one of these concepts will help the average golfer the most, left arm or right arm? Alot of the pullers are hip throwers or visa versa for sure. Those lessons you took Brendon have produced a crop of people doing the same. The new catch phrase from all that is getting stuck. All your work with all these guys has helped big time, and it is a mix for me because taking the left arm out of the equation as if it isnt needed doesnt work. It is part of the take away just as the left hand grip is a major part of the swing in my case. As Monte say your arms and hands, both of them, need to be working in the proper direction. Pretty simple from there.... and the move the pros use is a "turn" not a shift like the one we are told about or get to see. Kelvin Miyahira is the only one to ever identify the pro turn and its anatomy, and make it clear to see. The pivot or a shift that is endlessly talked about is another way to loose the club path and have to find another gyration to get it back. The greatest players all talked about 'turning' the right pocket and then the left. Go figure... and while Bobby's 'staying on sides' focuses on the shoulder it is as much about turning the left hip up and back (as the club follows the correct path) rather than the idea of using a pivot or a shift to do it. Priceless.... once you grasp the concept.

I think Malaska and Monte are teaching the same thing, but a slightly different twist on how to do it. BTW, on how pros explain their theories, like Monte says, can't trust 'em. Just as an example, if you're learning basketball and Jordan explains how to dunk the ball from the free throw line. Either run fast enough...or do it the easy way, and take one step, then dunk. Huh? Well, yeah, I KNOW I can't do that. Some moves in golf are not possible for a 55 year old amateur like me.

I read Bob Toski..Percy Boomer..toski speaks of left arm driven swing..Boomer of turning in a barrel ..hips driven swing....I personally prefer the body driven, arms passive swing....more importantly golf instruction neefs to be standardized or else us amateurs are beinf fed so much opinion....

Naw, Luczak A-B-C and Bobby Lopez 2 Oclock position keeps it all in front with everything synced up. The left does have some input on the backswing and the right under at transition is the key for me.

This is so hard for an amateur to do, the club head seems completely open when it's comes into the ball and you have to put total trust into your swing, not many people can hit the ball this way

perfect! most important part for me as fader slicer with driver and steep shaft is at 10.00. Bringing hands elbows in front makes the shaft + clubhead drop from the top under the swingplane and then pivot through. let the clubhead momentum take over. excellent! but where and when does the club handle begin to turn in front of the body? feels like a door hinge as a fixed point. chesthigh? sternum? right thigh (like malaska seems to show it)? as an idea it would be easier to replicate to have a fixed reference point where to bring the end of grip in front of u and let it turn from there with body pivot!? (got it malaska calls them the pivotpoint see link ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-MMCO7CeVNA0.html ) but anyway excellent drill by monte!!

This dude comes off as a touch pretentious but dang if he didn't nail it. Everyone else is talking about more hip turn . That's all good and dandy but that caused me to be stuck for years. Hip turn (pivot) but only when the arms are in the right position. I'm a believer. I subscribed. I'll see what else this dude has. May cancel my subscription with a couple golf web sites because of this guy.

Your arms and hands are passive when you jog! Very much so. They are still active though. And your body is passive when you jog. Passive to your intent. Passive is not the antonym of active.

LEFT ARM DOMINANCE.....All fail to mention this.....Jack hits with the back of the left hand for a reason. Lee Trevino favored the left arm in order to allow the right arm to stay tucked to the sides for longer.

Monte, please stop distorting the move, Ben Hogan called, "dropping into the Slot". What Hogan did and Jack N did was to align the three levers( two arms and club, each being a lever) in a common plane . Simple physics: when multiple levers pull in a common plane, Force is maximized. Jack said he worked to have the club equal distance between the arms in DS. ie three levers in a common plane. Dropping the clubhead behind the torso, as you often demonstrate, is a total distortion of what the Slot is.

Definitions are important. Without agreement on definitions(truth) we are in a sea of fake news. The Slot, Lag are two prime examples. Please enlighten us. How you define each of them.
@dtgps
@dtgps 6 лет назад
In a proper kinematic sequence, the proximal decelerates which causes distal to accelerate. In other words, when torso /shoulders decelerate, it is then that the arms (distal) accelerate. If arms out race torso/shoulders prematurely then that is a sign that the kinematic sequence is out of sync. Suggest, the left arm across the chest remains until the torso/left shoulder begins to decelerate. The golf club(hands being a part of the club lever) wont accelerate until the arm begins to decelerate. Its a chain action happening in a fraction of a second. Happening much too fast for even the best of athletes to consciously control.

Terry V : Yes you’re correct. However when (I video my swings) I definitely take the club back correctly and even outside, I still manage to screw up the downswing. It appears I’m one of those oddballs who can take the club back on the outside yet still come over the top coming down. Seems my natural movements don’t produce a normal momentum of swallowing the club when bringing it back more outside.

Vinsk couple things 1) don’t let the clubhead go out toward the ball on the downswing until you get your Rt elbow in front of your navel/belly button. 2) keep your back to the target when you do the bump, you’re prob shooting your trail shoulder out too early
