For me, Happy Loner feels like if Electra Heart and L+F had a baby. Definitely love the song, but where ADIAML was more extrospective, reflecting on the world and her partner, this feels much more like a wrestle with mental health (to me) which gave me those Electra Heart vibes, like Fear and Loathing but matured OR some of the L+F tracks like believe in love and soft to be strong.
For 5SOS’s 2011, the song is about the band looking back on the past 10 years they’ve been together. They started the band when they were 14/15/16 and had no interest in the money, the fame, just about making music and playing it live to people. Because they started so young they got taken advantage of a little bit by they’re management, working like 20 hour days, traveling nonstop for pretty much 5 years. They made their second album in the three months off between two of their world tours back in 2015-2016. They’ve struggled a lot with balancing what they want to do to keep themselves healthy and happy and what the music business demands of them. They’re fifth album coming out in 2022 is the first album they’ve made because they wanted to in years. So yeah, happy on the surface but depressing underneath.
Nicely put! (And it's kind of amazing how deep SLFL is, and how great it sounds for all that). To add on, though, I thought that "2011" was also a broader metaphor or another level (like so many of their songs) for just a pre-pandemic / pre-crisis moment. One reason it resonates so hard for me is I remember being young and hopeful once, and I'm older, so when I was their age it was pre-2001, and the world seemed to actually be getting better. And also like so many of their songs -- thinking of Jet Black Heart here, esp -- it's somehow uplifting while being painful; like an acknowledgement of that pain or shame or hurt that there is still beauty and joy and people giving a shit. I just saw them 3x in the last few weeks and 2011 was wild -- as was Take My Hand which I didn't expect -- but live there's so much energy and people are just going off. It's brilliant.
Also Aurora and Grimes release new music, i don't know if you guys are into these queens, Aurora release Heathens and grimes player of games. I also do not know if you have already checked the unreleased of the other Marina albums, there are very good ones

I literally love them more than most of the people I grew up with and still know (oop lol), although I've never met any of them or even seen them live (I do have tickets to 5SOS next year though and I'm beyond excited! 🥰).

She’s also a trans woman from another country so what other choice does she have if she wants to make it. I don’t see this same energy for Saweetie. She doesn’t defend him a lot, if anything she tries to avoid any questions about him and give answers that wouldn’t get her fired.
