I take a 1-2 gallon Ziploc to use in the seat pocket. Keeps my in-flight essentials clean and then I can reuse it for trash.

Sleep hack. I put a blanket or sweater inside my backpack. I place a pillowcase on top of the soft place on the backpack. Then I lean over the pack on my lap and put my head on the pillowcase. I slept well for 5 hours on last flight.😊

My husband is a tall and BIG guy. He always gets a window and I sleep against him like a big pillow 😂 I don’t prefer the middle, but he would be very uncomfortable with a stranger beside him because he pours into the seat beside him. So I take the hit and have to sit middle 🙃😂 I really try to be courteous to other people, but when people are loud or disrespectful when I try to sleep… I might not be nice 😂

I don’t use the pocket on the back of the seat. I never want to stick my hand in the pocket. For a long haul flight, I use the tray cover/ organizer for airplane seat that I bought on Amazon. This organizer is used as a cover for the food tray. After a meal when I put the tray back up, it is an organizer with multiple pockets for charger, glasses, snacks and water, etc. When it’s time to eat again, I just need to open the tray and do not need to remove the organizer at all. It stays on the tray for the entire flight whether the tray is up or down. The material is washable, very well-made. Each of my family member has one and we have used it for several years. This organizer is a must have for me on long haul flight. For lip moisturizer, instead of lip balm, I pack a tiny vaseline jar ($1). For long haul flight, after washing my face and skincare routine, I apply vaseline on my lips and dap vaseline on my face, especially the eye areas to seal moisture into the skin. This helps my skin stay hydrated during flight particularly in winter months.

100%. This is a great list! I might add that it's worth considering going with fully unscented products on a plane if possible. My soapbox: I'm not allergic to any fragrances (fingers crossed it stays that way!), but in my household we've settled into being "low scent" and let me tell you, it has made the rest of the world smell SO STRONG. I think the biggest change was when we switched to unscented laundery detergent. I can smell everyone's laundry detergent on them now, and boy howdy does it all smell artificial and overwhelming. I think it's easy for us to say "oh, this is scented, but it's not super strong" when everything we wear is fragranced enough to grade it on a curve, but here's my small plea from a less-perfumed world: just keep a little travel-sized tube of unscented lotion for the plane, maybe a little lavender if it helps with travel stress. You never know when there's a fragrance-sensitive person sitting next to you, and they want a great vacation too. *steps down from soapbox*

Blessings upon you! We’ve always been an unscented family as well, due to my stepmom, and now my asthma. I’ve found a few scents I like for hand cream at night, but it’s trial & error. Had to get a fake xmas tree a couple of years ago, kids (lol adult kids) didn’t love it, but life at the holidays is SO much better for me, thus everyone tbh. PS while Costco sells unscented laundry detergent, they do not sell unscented dryer sheets.. ah well. We cut them in thirds, all you need, so savings there.

Just did a long haul flight to SIN. Very few airlines have a first class area, on our flight, there were a lot of business class seats. Due to back issues, I have to have lie flight seats. I use a pillow to sit on when traveling in the US, the seats are so bad. I am like you, I like to keep to a routine, but when I packed my personal bag, the “needs”of make up remover, skin care and and then make up was a lot! I’ve been wiping down setas and tables for over 25 years, with kids in tow. COVID had nothing on my routine. Whenever there’s a sets pocket I use it (sanitized of course!). I’m not old but I do see the need to learn to scale back on my personal bag as I see older travelers with just their handbag. My best friend does the SIN-JFK flight and knows where to sit and how to handle the travel. I found your by accident but like your content. Keep it up!

It's always an aisle seat for me. Also, it's crucial for me to sanitize my area: tray table, arm rest and such. Airlines do sanitize; however, not between short stops for drop-offs and pick-ups. And, I sure do agree on the dim lights/noise issue. There's a lot to be missed about the more civilized days of flying. As always, great tips, Jen.

They definitely take more care with the sanitizing on the long haul flights as generally those planes are only going out maximum twice daily and thank you!!

I listened to another podcast by Cruisetips TV and she said she brings a gallon size zip lock bag to put in the seat back pocket. Then put your cabin things bag in that ziplock. I've started doing this and it helps my germaphobe personality. 😊

For your seat storage area, which can be gross, pack a full size zip lock bag and put that into the storage area and put your phones, ipads, books, cords, etc., into the bag. When you land, you can remove your items and throw the bag away.

I agree with you about utilizing the pouch on the seat in front of you. My “pro tip” in my necessity bag, I fold up a plastic grocery bag. I put the grocery bag in the pouch first, sanitize the outside of the pouch and put my necessity bag inside that and it stays clean. Also as I have some incidental garbage, I can through it in there and give it to the flight attendant when they collect garbage at the end of the flight.

I do that too. You don’t want to know what might have been in that pocket before…….🤢 I also now put my coat in a big plastic bag before stowing it somewhere, and I will put my inflight bag in one too so it’s not touching the floor or the overhead bin floor. Oh, you are so right about quiet time!! I have actually asked people to lower their voices then.

In my experience, European airlines require 2-4 weeks advanced notice and reconfirmation 48 hours in advance to have the special meal request processed. I failed to do this twice, calling 48 hours before my flight to place the initial request and I ended up with no food whatsoever on two long haul flights. Lesson learned.

Thanks so much Jen, took notes! May be back to long distance travel this spring, so exciting but my travel stuff is a mess…. Just to add, I make sure on every length flight that I wear a sweater or hoodie with pockets. Tissues & lip balm go in there. My husband insisted on aisle/middle one flight to Berlin from CA, stopping in Copenhagen, 5 yrs back, then a young Danish giant (with 3 or 4 kids and a wife opposite) had the aisle. Sweet fellow, but that was clearly a bad plan. We generally choose aisles across now, but he’s become all about the leg room since he had a trip to Asia without me (to visit a sick brother) last yr. He will pay in GOLD, apparently. So we may actually sit separately next long trip, as my legs are just too short for bulkhead… I think personal comfort will have to take precedence. That’s ok. I bought a leg rest sling that straps over the back of the tray table for a trip yrs ago but misplaced it so never used it. Refound & love to know if that has actually worked for anyone! Looking at Australia as well as Europe this spring (yeah, crazy, weird reasons ;) )

Brilliant as always! I love how clearly you explain everything in your videos (and of course your sense of humour). Living in Australia, our flights are often "double" long haul - e.g. 7 hours Oz to Asia, then 14 hours Asia to Europe/USA. I always stay at least one night for the dtop over to be able to sleep in a proper bed! I love your tips.

Your tips (and those in the comments) about the seat pocket situation are just fantastic. My husband and I get upgraded on Delta regularly for both domestic and international flights. We use the Delta Amex as our preferred credit card, and we purchase (when financially possible) Premium Select seats for longer flights which more often then not have turned into Delta One. We just returned from Rome yesterday with our adult children in regular Economy however, and still had a good flight experience. Being prepared and flexible are key. Accepting the difficulties of travel is also part of the game. I'm taking a trip to Japan in the Spring and am watching your videos to up my travel game. Thank you and Happy New Year.
