Love your vids Jay. So much so that I'm willing to wait a couple years for new experiments that you come up with. Thanks for your hard work and for sharing your findings.
Hey Jay, Love your experiments and explanation. In start of this video, you said you would perfer a better robust no water change setup than this as its a temperory place for you for now. Could you share a video on what are the things you would have made to make it better and robust from your current design. Thanks.
Thank you for this update! Your video inspired me on some designs for my own plastic tank. I didn't catch the volume of the fish tank though, could you please share how large is that tank?
Jay! I love your videos! I have had aquariums in the past where I did everything wrong (according to popular understanding), and yet had a thriving aquarium with fish that kept having babies like crazy. But it got to be too much work so I shut it down about 10 years ago. I was considering starting it up again and began to research and have found a lot of the aquarium “wisdom” out there, to be confusing. The basic kinda make sense, but the “whys” didn’t make any sense. And then I stumbled upon your channel! You are amazing! You make it all so plain and understandable, that a simpleton like me can grasp it. So thank you very much for that! So I have a question if you don’t mind. I am wanting to try a no water change tank and planning to use the deep substrate method you outlined. But I find that as I am investigating which substrates to get, people seem to overwhelmingly say that deep substrates cause toxic gases that will kill the fish. But I’ve watched your videos and it doesn’t seem to kill your fish or cause any problems. Am I missing something? Is this a misunderstanding most aquarists have? Or is there something in the set up that I need to be aware of that may cause that hazard if I set it up wrong?
No system is perfect. A perfect tank can fail for millions of reasons. Deep substrate works 99%of the time. As long as you source clean substrate and keep the tank well oxygenated i wouldn't worry too much.
Hi Jay, thanks for all the informative videos thus far. May I ask what in your opinion is the best substrate material for denitrification? I know in an experiment you had large gravel (12cm). Would other materials work better to maximize the growth of that bacteria in a given area?
I think there may be a substrate that is maybe 20% better than others. I dont know what that would be. I think the best substrate is the one you can source cheaply and easily in your area. I woldnt stress about finding that special substrate for marginally better performance.
Hi Jay, based on the fact that denitrification requires a carbon source, does the secondary deep substrate with the plants actually receive sufficient carbon organics for denitrification to happen? As the water being pumped into it seems to undergo mechanical filtration?
Great videos. I have a question. Have any hear about Dr Novak 's anoxic slow gravel filter? I want to know if that worth doing than a simple deep gravel. And if the manufactured substrate or pumice are good as gravel for removing nitrate, because I can get cheap substrate, nearly the price of stream gravel. Thanks
what aquatic plants have you found to be fairly turtle safe to eat? i’m planning to try to create a heavily planted no water change turtle tank for my yellow bellied slider turtle and it’s just so hard finding info on plants and turtles because everybody just says “don’t use plants, they’ll just eat them”
Duckweed, pennywort, parrots feather are all non toxic plants that turtles can eat. But you will need a seperate zone for plants if you want them to survive long term.
Since it is temporary , why not make a small aquarium like 12x6x6 inches. Mini size one. Moving it won't be a big problem. You can move it with on hand. LoL
@@Jaysaquarium LoL no, just that a new challenge to make a small aquarium with fish that is sustainable as your no water change aquarium, I mean given your constrains at the present.
@@Jaysaquarium Yes it will be if you are. I know there are many who are keen on aquariums but are not keen on the sizes of it. It must be sustainable and not too laborious and simple .
for your "filtration tank," do you feed the guppies on regular basis? do you still work away from home on the weekdays thus can not feed the fish/turtle on daily basis?
Yes i feed the guppies every day. My work is more stable now but I still occasionally have to go away for a week. In that case I will use an auto feeder
