The author is heavily involved in this project. Considering how the other live actions went.

"heavily involved" I suspect that he's barely involved. He has already mentioned the "miscommunications and clash of cultures" in an interview. Which is pretty obvious, considering there's nothing in common between the two and it's really hard to find two more polar opposite cultures on this planet than US and Japan. Looks like people in the west have this false image of Oda walking on set giving orders left and right which is simply neither how it works, nor how a Japanese person would act, especially working with foreigners. Oda is a very busy person and lives on a schedule. He really has no time to babysit a bunch of americans who have the budget to play around with his IP. What really happens is he's probably getting some emails with the concepts or finished material and politely agreeing with everyone and greenligjting anything going on. He won't be able to criticize or change anything since he would think it would hurt their feeling (no kidding!), regardless if deep down he actually hates what's going on or not - he would HAVE to go with the flow due to pressure. Because Japan is "don't rock the boat" society and everything is always go with the flow type of mindset. To the point that movie/game criticism isn't even a thing like it as in the west, and nobody ever discusses movies they just saw coming out of the cinema. Nothing is ever considered a bad game or a bad movie. It's always either a "was interesting" or "wasn't really interesting". Or the person would simply avoid giving an answer by changing the topic. In Japanese schools children are taught to never question anything and never argue about anything. Brainstorming isn't even a concept and everyone automatically agrees on anything. You're expected to nod in response, agree with everything being said and praise the opponent as if he's giving an Oscar's speech or something. When Twitter blew up with critisim about latest pokemon games in Japan it's radio silence and Japanese people are clueless that a bunch of westerners on Twitter or youtube level their products with dirt. Source: I live and work in Japan, so I see and struggle with all this myself on a daily basis. It's always same pattern behavior in any situation, every day, every month, every year, like you are stuck in a matrix or a theater play which repeats like a broken record. You guys have NO idea how bad all this can turn out. Don't let this "Oda is involved" copium give you any false hope. Stay real.

Regarding the author, Oda is heavily involved in this production, from the casting until now. The production team has promised that they would not release this show until Oda gives an okay. And Oda cares very much for this. Prior to this live action, he was already approached by others but he rejected them until Matt Owen, a huge OP fan and the showrunner of this live action pitched his idea to him, which Oda finally agreed. So in terms of the story being ruined, I think we don't need to worry. Some things need to be changed to fit the medium but they will be very faithful to it. Matt Owen would never ruin the story that means a lot to him. He wanted to produce this live action because he loves OP so much. As an OP fan since 2010 and have been following the news on the live action since it was announced in 2016/17 without fail, I need to spread the positivity, correct the misinformation if any, and let the new people know that the people who are involved in this production, including Oda, are very passionate with this project. And about the Nami scene, it was already changed in the anime by heaps. In the manga, Nami was first introduced in the Buggy's arc, never before that. So the changed made in the live adaption is pretty justified I'll say.

Oda was just happy because 1) it's simply a recognition of his hard work, and 2) to have a Hollywood-like version of One Piece because he knows that movie/TV show format appeals to much more people than a japanese anime would. Especially when this Japanese anime looks even more different than usual and may turn off a potential fan. So many different people has commented that they don't want to start one piece because it's either too long or too ugly (to them). And if that roadblock exist then of course Oda would be glad to have some type of gateway in a different format to attract newcomers to his IP in a more normal and grounded format (regardless if it turns out mediocre or not). Similar to how battle angel alita live adaptation, while still mediocre at best, gave some publicity to the IP making people get interested in checking out the anime or the original manga. At the end of the day, Oda is still a mangaka and a storyteller. He's not a movie director. It's downright impossible to transfer all his vision from his head into some westerners with money, cameras and costumes. That's already an impossible hurdle on its own even if they both spoke fluent English/Japanese. Add to that the inability for both parties to properly understand each other, express their ideas so that the other part understands it the way you in your head see it. Oda would HAVE to let it slide the way it turned out without interfering any more, otherwise they'd be filming one scene whole day doing hundred takes. And even after hundred takes it still feels off and not how Oda visioned it. Imagine the sheer pressure Oda has to go through. Take all the "Oda is involved" statement with a mountain of salt. Let alone "heavily involved". You're just setting this all up for a massive disappointed even despite all the red flags already being there. Come down to earth.

The reason I think Nami is introduced earlier than the manga/anime is because Oda wanted it that way. In the original manga, an editor convinced him to save females for later or something, because the target audience relates with males, and I understand that Oda didn't like that he went along with it. The live action will be a universe where Oda gets to change things he might not like, so change can be good! Another example of this is that Luffy's flashback with Shanks in the manga was chapter 1, but the anime stuck it in a bit later, so the live action will be closer to the manga than the anime.

Just remember that Oda, the creator is working heavily with this. He asked straight out why is Luffy wearing shoes! They then said its because of safety, wich Oda totally agreed on. Stuff that works in anime might not even be possible in real life, or straight out dangerous for the actors. Oda has even said that if he is not happy or feel like something is missing, he will NOT give this a OK good to go. So the fact that he says OK👍 says alot From the scenes its season 1 in the anime, so the first 60 ish episodes

Let me tell you some details Biggest thing is the author of One Piece , Oda is all the way involved in making this . He himself hand picked the characters for this . And it is said that the quality is gonna be Avengers Endgame level . It is also said by Oda himself that until he was satisfied with everything he wasn't letting them make progress through stuff . Second biggest detail for you as you asked why can't they make a literal copy of anime and manga well I disagree to you because that way in real life A LOT of stuff becomes cringe and stuff , especially with a manga or anime like One Piece which has a lot of goofy characters and stuff . Think of Luffy being over dumb in real life , that would make the whole thing way cringe . Third big detail which A LOT of people miss here is Oda is bringing One Piece in real life not only for manga fans or anime fans . He stated himself that this might be the only chance for him to make One Piece known world wide so off course here and there some stuff may change but the story is gonna go on the same route . So remember this watching One Piece in manga vs anime vs real life are all gonna have their own impacts and stuff . Now fourth is that people have mixed feelings for this as people are afraid that it might fail . Because in the past there are some animes like Dragon Ball Z , Death Note , Cowboy Bepop and even Attack on Titan that also have live adaption but they were not good at all . But the person named Oda has never let his fandom down so we all have faith in him .

Keep in mind this is early crew - when Nami and Zoro didn't get along, Nami was cold towards Luffy, Zoro and Luffy were still getting used to each other. It's going to be fine. It won't be a 1:1 copy, but it shouldn't be. It'll be its own thing and that's good! Also, with Oda on the floor it'll be fine. If we wanted the exact same experience, we could just read the manga or watch the anime. Also, you guys are saying it's too fast? It's literally a 1:30 min _teaser_ ! Of an 8 hour show. Of course it's going to be different, but different isn't bad. And Luffy has always been goofy when he's not mean mugging.

About some of your questions. This live action will adapt the first saga of One Piece that consist in 6 arcs. You guys at least in youtube are currently watching Syrup Village, the 3/6 arc in the saga. And no, this isn't the first live action anime adaptation but is one of the few that people are actually hyped for. Almost all live action adaptations are bad but this one is quite promising.

The reason why Ussop didn’t have a nose, Sanji not having his curly eyebrows and the crew’s dialogue is because they are keeping things real. If you make the live action look exactly like the characters from the anime, it’s gonna look goofy and basically just like a cosplay, I know the dialogue’s from the crew are different to how they are in the anime but you just can’t transfer anime comedy to real life, it doesn’t work. There are only a few things real life can do but in anime you can do anything because it’s a drawing and it looks natural, it looks normal but you just can’t easily do that in real life. Anime has their elements and real life has their elements that’s why the straw hats have kind of a different chemisty together so yeah keep that in mind. Imo it’s better this way because it’s more realistic I mean look at Cowboy Bebop for ex. They literally replicated everything from the anime that’s why it looked so goofy like 100% took it out of the anime and didn’t change a thing, that’s why these changes are amazing and I absolutely love it.

Like what a lot of other comments are saying, Oda (the author) is very caring and protective of his work so most if not all of the stuff is done is with his approval. Also there other anime live action adaptations but the good to bad ratio is very bad. However there are some bad adaptations that are guilty pleasures for some people, so to each their own. As for recommendations- Initial D, One Punch Man, and Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid.

Season 1 is gonna be 8 Episodes: From the start to Arlong Park (Episode 44) or at MOST the end of the East Blue Saga (Episode 53). SInce ya'll didn't recognize the blond guy, I think you haven't gotten there yet. Here's the thing tho: The ORIGINAL CREATOR Eichiiro Oda, who writes and makes One Piece to this day, had the final say in litarally EVERYTHING. He even had the power to stop the whole Show from launching until he was satisfied... So I have faith! As for Luffy's dialogue, I imagine that they had to give him a few more brain cells before Ussop and the others join... Just so an american audience doesn't find him unlikable and thinks of him as a kid trying to play pirate before he makes it... Which is still kinda his vibe! So long as the fights look good and he's allowed to be brutal, Iñaki Godoy has my FULL faith!

I do understand your concerns. Adaptations are tricky to do well. But I remember when people said adapting fantasy novels to live action was impossible and adapting superheroes was impossible. I believe it can be done. Even if One Piece is the show that proves it to the world that manga can be adapted into live action, there will be good and bad adaptations in the future. But I have hope here. Like you said, sets and costumes look good. They do have a different actor for Kuro, they have found an actor/unicyclists for Moji. As for the dialogue, it is hard to judge with just a few lines, but I think they are building on the character traits that remain consistent over the course of 1000 chapters and they are just highlighting some of the characteristics that become more obvious later in East Blue, and maybe shifting the nuances a little based on which elements of the characters the writers and actors are best able to portray. This happens with good and bad adaptations so I hope you still give the series a chance. I do have a few concerns still, but I have a lot of hope that this series will be fun and interesting to watch.

About Chopper, the reindeer, if the CGI is good, that can be easily done, think about Pikachu in detective pikachu or Sonic in Sonic the film, they were perfect (also the show stops at logue town, so the reindeer will not be here, because it stops at episode 50 more or less) I'm curios, I'm definitely going to watch it knowing this has to be differnt from the manga, because a copy it will end in a failure, it has to be different, but faithful to the original story, like setting and behavior of the characters. If the authors are able to unite fantasy and reality in the right way to not make it cringe, then it's already a success

I love how you're only 14 episodes in and you're already like 'he wouldn't say that!' about the 'I sense a little tension amongst the crew', like the rest of the fandom 😂 There are quite a few live-action version of anime, but generally they are pretty bad... But as a major One Piece fan, I am already pleasantly surprised. (still a little sceptic but... getting carefully positive). They will probably cut some little things out/change little things, but Oda, the author of One Piece is closely working together with the crew of this Live Action, so that's definitely a positive thing. Like, the important bits will stay. And I don't think they will merge arcs, but the first arcs are probably not gonna be more than 1 episode (but longer than an anime episode). Also the actors are major One Piece fans, especially Luffy and Nami. Anyway, I was hoping you'd react to the trailer, but I did not dare suggesting it because there are a few things in there that you haven't seen in the anime yet.

What people have got to remember is that Live action adaptations of anime/manga can't be 100% accurate to the source material: there are limitations with what we can do in RL and with a set budget. The team behind this have tried to be as faithful to the manga as they possible can and you can see it in the costumes, set pieces and casting. The haters just shit on this without considering those factors or know about the behind the scenes news. It really pisses me off. Oda senei is the exec producer for this show and has the final say on what he approves of and doesn't to go into live action. This teaser looks good and generally i'm seeing a 65/35% in favor for this adaptation.

A little more information about this live action is it will only go on for I think 11-12 episodes, every episode is about 45 minutes to an hour and they will release per week just like a regular anime schedule to keep hype. Now about the story itself, it is canon and it will take the story from the manga itself, if I remember correctly the live action series will cover episode 1-60 of the one piece anime and it will end when the straw hats go to the grand line and meet Laboon. If the live action becomes a hit and it succeeds maybe they will make a season 2.

To find out if this gonna work or not is pretty simple, because we already have all the benchmarks before us: -watch Death Note anime, then watch the Netflix adaptation. -watch Cowboy Bebop anime, then watch the Netflix adaptation. -watch Dragon Ball anime, then watch Dragon Ball Evolution adaption. And even the live actions produced by the Japanese themselves are also as miserable, which shows that all of it can and will go wrong even without a cultural gap, like Fullmetal alchemist or Attack on titan. What works perfectly in anime and manga simply won't work in a movie. Especially when the world and the characters are so animated and caricature like one piece. Instead you have to witness a bunch of millennial cosplayers speaking in monotone uninterested voices filmed with a dull mexican filter. Which part of this screams "one piece" exactly? Oda specifically designs characters so exaggerated so that the reader could feel what that character is all about from just a glance. But here we have a bunch of normal looking people doing normal things and that's it. They even removed Usopp's nose and Sanji's eyebrow to make it more realistic and grounded. Yeah, because one piece is all about realism and being normal.. Somehow they still left Buggy's red nose which is his real nose btw. Consistency much? I'm not even starting about all the craziness that will start happening later in the series. Will all of them also be reduced to just normal people without any features? I'm surprised Chopper will be fully cgi (oh god, the horror!) instead of just making Dwayne Johnson play him in a deer suit with his nose tip painted blue. Because at this point I won't be surprised any more. Even after all this there are somehow people who still think "but this time is different" Sure.. This live action adaptation will be nothing but a compilation of aha moments, so you could yell "oh, I remember that from the anime/manga" every 10 seconds. Forget about any world building or character development in this adaptation. Also everything will be loud and in your faceblike in LazyTown, and everything will be "tell don't show", because in the west subtleness is not a known concept. You can already see where this is going and who it's aimed at because the dialogue resembles the bickering you see in MCU movies and where everyone is just an assholes to each other. This whole production is so un-One Piece, ugh.. The worst part is that this may actually have the opposite effect. Instead of inviting new fans it can cause damage by staining the one piece name and turn potential fans off even more from the series. For example many people who don't watch anime at all tried to watch the Attack on Titan live action adaptation and came to the conclusion that they were right all along about anime sucking in general and that all anime fans are just some mentally challenged weirdos for liking something like this.

In regards to whether they have done live action adaptations of anime before, yeah, it is not rare for them to do so. They usually have a bad reputation (at least when it comes to shounen manga adaptation), though one has to remember that they are different mediums and what works in one does not necessarily work in another (for example, if Luffy acted the same in the live action adaptation as he does in the manga, he would look like a psychopath). As some examples, the Death Note's adaptation is known to be bad, as are the ones for Attack on Titan, Full Metal Alchemist and Dragon Ball. On the other hand, I heard that Samurai X and Gintama have good adaptations as does Battle Angel Alita and Hentai Kamen; Sailor Moon's is campy and not the best quality (newbie actors and bad special effects) but fun in its own way and did some good work in the character development department and plot (save for some questionable choices regarding Luna) and Liar Game has a meh adaptation. So it is very much a hit or miss situation, though in general they have bad reputation. As for how long it will be, as far as I know it won't be the whole series that will be adapted but the first part of it (so up two more arcs after the one Usopp is introduced in).

Copying it exactly is not the way to go. It never works, so they're being slightly original. This will make its own mark, and I suggest maybe watch more of One Piece before judging the dialogue. Luffy's lines are fine because he's actually emotionally intelligent while also carefree. The actors worked really hard to practice their craft (Zoro's actor is already a live action anime swordsman actor) and they were also cast through Oda's input. If the live action will be goofy, it's because the source manga is goofy, all intentional. IF the writing flops, it's because not all people like the source.

I also thought that luffy's dialogues are not so luffy, but making luffy in the real world I think it would be very ridiculous and they even removed ussop's nose

I mean, One Piece is ridiculous and that's the best thing about the story. I hope the show get wacky with every episode, if not, it's not One Piece. If I want a realistic pirate show/movie I would watch Pirates of the Caribbean.

@@mray4784 yes I agree, but the idea of the live action is to reach the west to go see the anime, even if the first season is bad they can improve in the second if it is renewed

Yeahhh.... I think the thing that puts you off about luffy is... he kinda seems like a nerd. When luffy is supposed to be a chad.

one piece live action needs to be it's own thing, it can't be a copy of manga, not possible, and what would be the point of doing that? i think one piece live action is going to be decent

the attitude of Luffy in the live action is a little off like when Zoro and Nami are arguing. Oda's Luffy doesnt care about things like that and just do something stupid around the ship.. In the live action I think Netflix Luffy is little mature..... and yeah why is Nami fighting in Morgan's Navy Base???? why o why?? oh my..

There have been western live actions of anime. Theyve pretty much all have been bad. Dragon ball evolution, cowboy bebop etc. One piece is by far the most ambitious property theyve tried to adapt. The author oda has been involved and the actors look pretty damn good. Getting luffy right is gunna be really tough and u have to love luffy for the shie to work. Lets give it a chance and hope its good

There were several American live-action adaptations of anime most of them were garbage Dragon Ball Z, Cowboy Bebop, Fist of the North Star, and Death Note being the most notorious stinkers Only Battle Angel Alita and Edge of Tomorrow were truly good Ghost in the Shell and Speed Racer were OK, but not great. The live-action adaptation of City Hunter that was made in Hong Kong and starred Jackie Chan was pretty awesome, but that does not count among the American adaptations (pretty sure there were several live-action adaptations of anime made in Hong King during the 80s and early 90s)

There have been quite a few live action anime adaptations, and pretty much all of them have been terrible. A few of them have some redeeming qualities, but they are overall bad. The best one I've seen is the Bleach Live Action Movie, which still wasn't anywhere near as good as the anime or manga. If nothing else One Piece's Live Action will look nice(the sets were actually built, so they'll be cool to see). Also it's impossibility to copy an anime/manga 1:1, because it's impossible to translate what can be done in animation, which is why most people just say to leave it as animation.

Dialogue was my issue as well. And Nami coming off as angsty instead of spunky and adventurous.

Cartoonish humor can't be done in real. So some characters need to adapt. You'll get used to it. Look at its own thing, don't compare with animation.
