I am a NICU RT and I can tell you the reason that the levels are set the way they are is because it is normal for newborns to fluctuate during the day , babies do this all the time and most kids are on monitor so you would never know, yes in oxygen saturation of 80 is very low but the reason it said there is so that you know when the baby is at that level something is actually wrong , if it was set any higher than that it would be going off all the time because babies drop down all the time when they cough when they have reflux when they bear down , what matters is that they come back up on their own. The owl that will monitor you if it gets to a dangerous level that gives you plenty of time to perform this lifesaving measures. And yes a heart rate of 70 is very low for an infant however they have moments again where their heart rate will fluctuate to 90s and you don’t want them set there because then you would be alarming all the time, it is very normal for newborns and babies to fluctuate heart rate and oxygen levels that I’ll let is set to let you know when there’s an actual problem that’s the reason that the parameters are set where they are . I can tell you from working in the nicu, when babies have a vagal response due to acid reflex or cough their heart rates can drop pretty low and we’re not doing CPR because they come back up on their own . The owlet will let you know if they have gotten to a level that you need to be concerned about , and prevent you from running in there for normal newborn fluctuations

The Owlet saved my grandsons life. After the alarm going off saying his heart rate was 260 bpm. my daughters pediatrician said throw it away it's not true the baby heart rate could get that high. Well after trying her friends owlet who is a nurse, the alarm went off again. My grandson was rushed to a children hospital and in ICU with a heart problem called SVT supraventricular tachycardia. He thank God is on mess that will control it but he has to see a cardiologist regularly to adjust his men's. He wears the owlet every night. The pediatrician is no longer my grandsons doctor.

thank you michelle...keep posting this story; pediatricians/nurses often say not necessary, but it is better safe than sorry when it comes to our kids. Very difficult for clinicians to catch any kind of cardiac pathology that is ischemic, or "not happening all the time." They only check the kiddos for a moment in the office. What about the other 99.9% of the time? It has saved us a little one too. So worth it!

Poor baby!!! Glad you trusted your gut! I have the same condition. My highest heart rate on record was 238....I had no symptoms, i felt totally normal, but heart monitor tech told me to go to ER just in case. 6 hours later I'm being airlifted to a different hospital for emergency surgery after falling into v-tach patterns. Definitely investing in this owlet monitor for my little one, god forbid he also has heart issues.

The owlet is a MUST for us!!! We got it about a week after my son was born. Before I gave birth, I was going back and forth on whether or not it was really necessary. I decided it wasn’t until I had him. He had some complications with his breathing that first night, so my husband ended up sleeping in shifts. Our pediatrician strongly suggested we get it since we were so worried! I would also like to add that you DO NOT need WiFi with this. However, in order to actually use the app and see the babies vitals, it will need to be connected to WiFi. But we just go solely on the base station right now, and it’s been great!

I have heard so many stories about this saving lives. It alarmed twice with my preemie daughter. Once she was propped up on a boppy on her tummy and fell asleep. I was sitting with her, looking at her. I am convinced her position was causing her to not get enough oxygen but from the outside she looked totally fine. The second time was 4am and woke us up screaming, we have no idea if it was a false alarm or not, I picked her up and she was breathing and had good color. Either way we just don't know, and the sense of security and peace of mind it gave us was priceless. I will be using it again for my second child due soon.

When I was pregnant I wanted to order an Owlet, one of my friends only caught her daughters health issues because of her owlet monitor, but I considered it a luxury item. My daughter stopped breathing on me a few weeks ago. She was running a fever at the time. I was holding her and I noticed immediately when she went limp. I got her woke up. she's fine. But I no longer consider it a luxury item. What would have happened if my baby hadn't been in my arms? What would have happened if I'd left the room? Maybe nothing, maybe she would have started breathing again on her own if I'd given her a few seconds longer, or maybe I wouldn't have my baby in my arms tonight. I'm not considering the Owlet a Luxury item. Now it's necessary for my baby's safety.

@@aradonlover as a pediatrician "in practice" are you not allowed legally to recommend these devices. I ask because around 2n half months my daughter had her first choking event. She went completely limp. It took forever for 911 we were admitted. It didn't happen again. THERE. She got a full workup. Since then we have had an insaine amout of events. Some she can't make a noise and the bulb to the throat is the onky thing that works and it takes a lot of work. I am a single mom. With little help. I have a anxietu hx documented in bby Chart. Now. Ive never been able to video as it is an all out emergency but I have lived in the terror of it happening with my head turned or asleep next to her crib. She sees gi specialists from mass gen and everyone is aware. Yet when i beg for med monitor im denied and reassured im doing great job it will get better. Yet no one will say yes it can't hurt to try this or any. Not a name monitor. "It creates anxiety" i was a nurse i know to assess my baby physically of im getting a alert. But with our situation getting so extreme yet not qualifying. Idk why for med mon. Why wouldn't they say. Ahh couldn't hurt. Her gen ped gives me amd tells me off the record stuff "all the time". I have been listening to them. But I can't even do a load of dishes with her in a safe zone behind .e for fear. I won't hear a cry for help? If its a rule ill know amd im ordering now. Im starting to pass out and sleep thru wake times when she is just in crib. Do idk. People need to sleep. At my wits end. I was gonna get snuza hero but wanted something to tell me she is struggling. She jerks allot when it happens I was afraid it would only tell me.after she wasn't breathing. Maybe I should have just done it. I will mever rest. We had our longest period. 5 weeks not even "struggle I call it" where she can get a breath or squeak occasionally during" then bam. Full on . No noise. I turned around she was fighting with that panic that crushes your soul. Are they taking me seriously enough

I agree with that RN as a fellow RN a heart rate of 60 and I would be calling a code and initiating PALS protocol. With that being said I will be purchasing this for my next baby. I cant tell you how many times I would wake up at night to check on her. She slept in her crib beside my bed for ten months. I did not sleep for more than 3 hours for ten whole months lol. I have no idea how I survived.

I just bought this for my son that was born 13 weeks early and is getting ready to leave the NICU soon. I wanted to comment on what the nurse said in the video. I’ve been watching pulse ox monitors for the last 9 weeks and it can be the scariest thing you see when you can blink and all of a sudden that heart rate drops down in the 40 and 50 range. Thankfully he has grown out of his Brady’s but his heart rate can still drop quite a bit when he is in a deep sleep. The doctor has informed us that it’s normal and his alarms do not go off unless it reaches below 70.

Nanny by Jablotron is what maternity wards in Europe and Japan use to monitor for SIDS. It's cheaper and you can keep using it when they're a toddler. It uses a pad that goes under their mattress, and doesn't use internet or apps. I didn't like the thought of the monitor being dependent on internet or my phone. Further, it's a certified medical device that is half the price. We're still using it at almost 20 months.

Make sure it works correctly on your phone and all the volumes are up. My phone glitches with the app for notifications (pretty sure it's just my phone) and so I keep the base near me. The base is decently loud. Plus if there is a wifi outage the base will still alert you but your phone wouldn't. It's safer to keep the base in the room. Over all, I wouldn't be able to sleep without this thing and so I have nothing but good things to say about it. They also have great payment options which is good if you don't have a lot of money upfront.

Unfortunately, I don’t use video baby, but I bought a baby monitor from MonBaby when I was still pregnant. I really liked the ease of handling, besides, it was at a good price. When the baby fell asleep, I started housework and was always calm for my daughter. I went out and weed grass in the garden, and cooked food in the kitchen, and cleaned the whole house, and at the same time, I knew that the baby monitor always looked after my baby.

We used the Owlet for my grandson. It was absolutely worth the money!!! We never had any alarms go off, other than a couple of ”sock displacement“ alerts, because Grandma was just learning how to use it, but just having peace of mind, and being able to know he is sleeping with good sats (by viewing the readings on your phone) is worth it. It even tells you if he/she is wiggling. Added bonus: I live 4 hours away, so I was able to check the app around his bedtime, and know he was safe and snug in his little bed. Our family gives the Owlet a big thumbs up!👍

I'm curious how babies survived prior to these overly expensive devices came around. I've worked in the medical field for over 25 years, have a 23 year old and expecting another in April. If your baby had complications, I totally agree with something this like this, however if your baby is perfectly healthy, don't stress yourself out more than you need to.

In the 1800's there was an almost 50% infant mortality rate. Now there is a 0.5% infant mortality rate. innovations like this no doubt contribute to this reduced infant mortality rate. To state "how did babies survive before all this stuff" .. well.. they didn't, almost 50% of them didn't. It is important to be prudent and understand the risks to your baby because ignorance of these often preventable risks is what is responsible for a large number of infant deaths that we do see nowadays and you can bet these poor mothers were unaware because some ignorant person told them not to worry about anything. We absolutely should consider all risks and respond accordingly and give our little ones the best chance possible, failure to do this is literally the cause of many of the infant mortality's we see today.

Im buying this for round two and feel pretty confident that it will, like the other one, continue to provide a sense of security around something tat would Otherwise be untracked.

Baby monitor the smart sock is very sympathetic to me, probably because I use a similar one for my child, only from Monbaby. Smart sensors are really very important in the life of our children.

The price tag is hefty for such little equipment. But it's a unique product. If you are on a tight budget, you can get it used for ~30% off and sell it at your babys birthday. So the costs are severly softened. (It's a great gift idea for the grandparents!) Or use one of the other systems like Monbaby, Jablotron, and probably some more. It's not necessary, but worth it. Like insurance. You pay some money to protect what you can't stand to lose. Even if it is rarely needed. But I would not go without it.

I purchased an Owlet in February 2020 for my preemie baby. Worked really well the first month. However one night, and of course it happens at night when customer service isn’t available, but it dropped connection to our wi fi. We did all the recommended troubleshooting tips, unfortunately nothing helped. It kept saying “searching for base station” or “wi fi not connected.” Like this video says, the Owlet will still work at the base station, but it will be unusable with the app through your phone. Which is one of the main parts about it that I liked. My issue, along with many other similar issues can be read on the Owlet App for iPhones. Many complaints are about the same problem. Customer service for Owlet will say it’s a problem with the app, and they’re working on it. Well it’s been a problem for the last two years at least for some customers. I’m not a person to post reviews on social media, but I just feel for the money people will spend on this product to be fully aware, that it’s not always reliable.

Thanks for the review! I purchased it today and I guess I’m going to have to hook it up tomorrow. Can you tell me, I usually put my phone on night time mode (iPhone) so would I get the alert if the red light and alarm go off? Also, I purchased the camera part too.
@ashleycorum7917
@ashleycorum7917 4 года назад
Liz Falk no, you’ll need to not put it on night mode because that’s what silences your phone alerts.

From what I've seen, the only way to get actual numerical data from the sensor right in front of you is to send it through the Owlet server via internet connection and then back to an app on your phone. They could have just put the numbers on the base station, but it would be more difficult to collect data from you that way. At 5:47, why was the Owlet reading "at the same time" in a different location in the dark? Does this have anything to do with having to connect to the internet to send data to their servers before you can see if your child is okay?

I was almost s victim of sids when I was a baby. My mom put me in my swing under the tree in the front yard while she was doing some yard work and my head tilted funny because I fell asleep so she rolled up some small blankets up to help support my head better. She contued her work and when she checked on me my face was slightly in the blanket and when she pulled the blanket I gasped for air. Scary right!

We've had tons of false readings on the gen two. I put it on well but it still falls off. Readings take forever. Need to charge every night, adding to one more thing that needs to be done daily. My Garmin watch charges once a week, and gets instant readings, and costs about the same. Need I say more? Don't waste your money on this.

The problem with a monitor like this is that you as a parent are not a healthcare professional. Interpreting the results from a saturation and heart rate graph is something you need to learn. For example, our son was born early and stayed in the hospital for quite some time and was attached to professional monitors. Sometimes there would be an alert for his saturation but the curve would be okay so the nurse would just leave him be or he would recover before someone could take a look. The staff was very firm about learning us to look at our son: how is he behaving, is he awake, skin color, etc. Personally, I would get very stressed from a device like this that is not medical but is supposed to give you peace of mind.

It’s a great product I’d still recommend but I’ve had to replace mine twice in 6 months because of sensor issues. The 4 day business day wait for a new sensor sucks and I hope they fix this issue soon. The only good thing is the customer service is great and they fully cover their warranty. They told me the main cause of sensor issues is normal wear and tear and people forcing the charger into the sock which isn’t easy to do gently because it doesn’t quite match up easily like my cell phone does and there isn’t a way to do it gently, but I’m trying my best I got one false scary high heart rate alarm when I changed sock sizes and had to go back to the smaller size even though it was too small because he was between sizes. Would be nice for more sock sizes for babies that are stuck in between. Either way I’d still highly recommend this product and love the peace of mind it gives me. Just hope the sensor lasts for baby number 2 and doesn’t die again after my warranty is up...
