@@9133beta The idea behind a split window is repairs instead of replacing a whole windshield you only need to replace a section that's cracked saving you on repair cost.
There's a trucking company in Taranaki New Zealand that used to import Peterbuilts and convert them to RHD under full rebuilds. Their colour scheme is very similar to the green Pete in the workshop. Very smart looking rigs.
I’m guessing they usually have two piece is for two reasons. One cost is cheaper having square & flat screens & Secondly but actually the main reason FITTING & replacement out in the field due to the big hood, or bonnet we call it in the U.K. I drive a Scania all day at work & love my Beast it’s King Of The Road. I really like the one piece windshield on the PeterBuilt, can tsee a problem with it freezing up, that’s kind of ridiculous with modern heating technology, but I do like the split screen, split screen is mean & aggressive looking, tough looking & I like that. To be honest split screen looks better from the outside, single screen better for driving.
The flip up piece of plastic on the desk drawer in the sleeper is hilarious, it's just a bare piece of acrylic with screws through the face attaching it to the hinges. It looks like something someone made in their garage.
I really do love the look of all those trucks... but comparing them with the EU trucks, they look to be a handful to drive... Especially the longer frames. What a huge turn radius they must have! So my hat's off for the guys and girls driving those and backing those things up with a trailer attached. But again: they really look freakin' cool!
I may not be a trucker, but I like looking at them, but, in opinion, 351s and 359s still look better to me. Something about them older trucks, seem to have more spirit in them than the newer ones. Especially the twin stick trucks, I've only seen one, but sadly she met her end...or so I'm told. Bless all you truckers out there and the hard work you all put in, bless you, amen.
Bruce I have a picture of a 389 taken in 2021 with a 1 piece winshield. The cab is riveted together, found the truck @ loves in N.Mexico, I knew something was strange when I saw the truck, the reason I snapped a photo. Truck was bright green pulling a chem tanker.
So this is practically 50 years of evolution of American trucks? And truckers complain about the single bigger windshield. Scania skipped splitted windshields already in the 1940's on their trucks. American trucks seem to be the only vehicles in the world that still have split windshields. For example no car or no farm tractor has them anymore. One important reason is that the lath between the windows disturbs the visibility the same way "wunderbaums" and other things hanging in the middle of the windshield do. These are in fact illegal in many countries.
I THINK THE TRUCK MAKERS COULD SELL MORE IF THEY BROUGHT SOME REPLICAS BACK FROM THE OLD DAYS LIKE FORD DID WITH THE SHELBY MUSTANG AND DODGE DID WITH THE CHARGER ONLY THEY COULD NOT MAKE A GENERAL LEE ANY MORE BECAUSE THAT WOULD BE SO CALLED RACIST. WOULDN'T IT BE COOL IF MACK MADE A B MODEL REPLICA OR INTERNATIONAL AND KW AND PETE STARTED MAKING THE NEEDLE NOSES AGAIN AND THE BULL NOSES. PUT IN THE OLD LOOK LIKE TWIN STICKS AND THE OLD MODEL A FORD HEADLIGHTS. 4 INCH STACKS. MAKE IT COOL AGAIN BUT IT IS ALL ABOUT FUEL ECONOMY NOW WITH THE PLASTIC CRAP TRUCKS. PAINT THEM WITH FARM TRACTOR COLORS LIKE JOHN DEERE GREEN IH RED, ALLIS CHALMERS ORANGE, FORD BLUE, DEUTZ GREEN, OLIVER GREEN, @TeIegramme_Bruce_Wilson7
Large windshields are fine. Northern ab here and drove a 567 with the same style windshield. Make sure the small micron cab air filter goes in the garbage and just use the one thick cab filter. Then make sure you keep your AC button on as it draws out humidity. If it has auto climate I hit auto then hit window and feet and set temp to 73ish and have never had an issue with the window freezing as far down as -47°C. However, the older trucks like that 389 or a w900 have the worst fan heaters in the world and the worst wipers. What pieces of junk that have never been update since 1986 when the t800 came out. Now those windows get icey and fogged up real quick.
Since everyone has a opinion mines I do not like that 589 breathers are goofy being so long wide cab on it weird also and no it won't grow on me lol least the 389 from 379 actually looked good
They had to make the breathers smaller because the cab is wider, the truck can only have so much overall width. The only other "widecab" truck with external breathers is the International Lonestar
Now that Peterbilt has built a full on freightliner clone, I’d like to see them do a 399, and go back to wing windows, corvette dash, mirrors on the doors and keep the 2 piece flat glass windshields. But let’s face it, even if they did it would still be a POS. I really believe Peterbilt peaked in 2000. Gimme a 379 extended hood with the American Class interior in Oxblood with a 550 6NZ CAT and 18 and I’d be happy.
Here Finland, its not broblem, if your truck are Cab - Over, or , Conventional. Here U can drag two trailers, total weight 76 metric tonn. North Finland, 104 tonn. Biggest broblem are Germany, I cant go there with my Truck, its too heavy, and too long. Pete. From Finland.
That's right I've own 1 peterbuilt I sold it 60bdays after I bought it I've always owned KW w900L studio sleeper trucks that's the Rolls-Royce of trucks
And the European guys wonder why we love our American trucks so much. 🤷♂️ I wonder how many million and a half mile Volvos and Scanias that they have over there??? 🤔
You can put a couple million more miles on that b model. My 87 FLC SBA has 3.2 million on it and still has the original crankshaft and block. Chassis, cab and interior, driveline to include the transmission, still all original. Care for them well, and they will care for you.
@@straybullitt you're right, we do have far less super high mileage trucks over here, although you have to remember that we have much shorter distances sometimes. But in modern trucks, I don't think you'll find any that have got anywhere near a million miles
Hahahaaa, that cracked me up,I wonder when the last split screen European truck was built, guessing late 50's? I DO actually like the way the Petes look, and the interior seems nice for what they are, but OMG they are antiques.
@@PowerslideSWE I think there were still some split screens in the 60s but not many. I like the look of American trucks too but agree they are absolute antiques.
Hahaha the 389 was the only truck that still had a one piece windshield and the people wanted it that way ,yes it's kinda stupid that the 389 didnt had a thermostat but we have had em a long time to but yeah brag on
Split flat windshield is cheaper to replace and easier to fit, especially versus the almost custom glued windshields in the euro trucks. But they’re antiques. Still cheaper.
The amount of hate the 589 is getting just amazes me. Death of a legend? Peterbilt is holding onto a 35+ year design for its customers while trying to add some modern amenities. If were being honest the 589 is already outdated when its being released. I think you even said it best when talking about your Scania that is how old? and yet its engineering was way ahead of American trucks and if we had them here likely no one would drive Peterbilts.
Exactly idk why people are truly hating on it. People need to thank Peterbilt for not killing off the 359/379 look entirely… anybody who actually complains about the 1 piece windshield and digital gauges are just grasping at straws at this point. I’m sure there will definitely be two piece windshields and classic regular gauge dashboards you can swap into these trucks.
Opinions are like A**Holes everyone has one so here’s mine. If you’re interested in the 589, then why don’t people buy the 567? I much prefer the 379 or 389 myself. Love the videos
Cab looks a little off from the overall looks of the truck but versatility is a lot better! I thought the 589 would be a whole refreshed look but I’m happy they kept this design around a little longer
Thank you for this comment I’m pre 389 myself so we consider the 379 the pinnacle of the design. And the 389 only lasted 17 years or so hardly a Legend
Lol, I couldn't believe he was bragging up the 389. He clearly doesn't understand what makes a long hood Peterbilt a long hood Peterbilt. Fancy cup holders, one piece windshield for visibility, wide cabs, large step boxes and digital screen are not it.
I personally hate the 589. It is way too modern with the one piece windshield and the wide cab. People will hang on to their 389:s for a very long time.
If u like the new 589 I understand. I honestly don’t. The inside looks like a freightliner being only able to have 6 gauges is absurd. Having a bunch of gauges is what makes it what it is. Itd be nice to opt out for that gaudy digital dash as well. Peterbilt did a good job of preserving what they could due to BS government regulations. When a company starts listening to the government instead of the ppl who actually buy the product is when quality goes down. End of an era. Sad to see.
Ive never drove a 589 but ive spent some time in a 579…which is basically the same cab as a 589. And I do not like it at all, it just doesn’t feel right. Theres just nothing like the experience of driving a 379/389
@@straybullittkeep bluffing yourself. American trucks are definitely not more powerful than euro trucks..have you seen the tons the Australian trucks pull..
@@straybullitt Yeah, a 60 year old design with a wheesy 600 hp cummins with a manual gearbox no less would deffo drag a new S770 around the blocks, keep dreaming. The only reason US truck s are so incredibly dated is because you don't import modern trucks to protect your local industry, if you did, NO ONE would buy a new Peterbilt, no one.
It's now only 30 years behind our Euro trucks in terms of cab size, technology, power etc. Those dials, radio etc should be on a configurable touch screen these days. A heavy haul with 565bhp? You're still 200bhp short. Still, looks good.
Maybe someone do not like these old style trucks, but I think they are brilliant so much class and design they are time proof, like looking at the restomoded car!
Well. Of course the trucks are nice. But if European truck manufacturers were to start manufacturing such trucks whose designs are 50 years old, then it is called retro. They should, however, buy in engines and gearboxes from Volvo or Scania
@@svensvensson9337some guys operate an American truck in Europe. They say its cool to haul their own equipment but these trucks are hard on the operator, they wouldnt want to sit 10 hour days in one.
@@SjanzoI don't think our European roads are fully adapted for American trucks. The turning radius is as far as I know the most troublesome part. And so they have neither strong engines nor gearboxes compared to the European ones. But I would have liked to put a Scania V8 diesel in a Peterbilt just to get a really cool truck.
@@svensvensson9337 in Europe there is a law that prescribes how wide the lane may be when a truck turns an xxx meter radius. Thats why double combis in Holland need a steered dolly, just to pull the last semitrailer further outward.
Stop building the crappy 589, and bring back the 389, with full gauges on the dashboard, not a TV screen starring you in the face. Oh and don't forget to put back the trailer brake on the steering colum, not on the dash. I still run a 2019 389, but shes getting up there in milage and would like to buy another peterbilt but only a 389 model.
You guys hollering about the 379 and 389 being old school.😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 I'm guessing most of you aren't old enough to remember the 358 or 351. WAY smaller cab. Or a 352? Old school😂😂😂😂
Diesel Life should also get a NEW HEAVY HAUL W900L also so he & his wife have the BEST 2 Heavy Haul New LARGECARS in his business. There's a 100 anniversary black & silver 72" W900L Aerocab HEAVY HAUL in Tennessee not far where he purchased the new 389 Green HEAVY HAUL
Junk, the presenter is a typical sales man. He obviously doesn't understand what made a long hood Peterbilt a Peterbilt people liked in the first place. Brags about the cup holders repeatedly, how much roomier for storage the larger step boxes are and how much visibility the new one piece windshield offers. Oh ya and don't forget the truck now has a thermostat for cabin temp and a steel cab instead of aluminum! Give me a break. How much did Peterbilt or the ATA pay this guy in endorsements to do this! Show me a driver that got into a long hood Peterbilt and said I can't see, there is no storage in the step boxes and I don't know where to put my cup. I will show that same driver a Volvo, Cascadia or any other aero truck and he will happily drive it not understanding the difference. The 589 truck looks like an International and Western Star had a child together!
Luckily they still offer a long hood. Can’t say the same for Freightliner Mack western star I was disappointed at first but the 589 looks better than any other new road truck 😢
@@Silas_cv1 : the 379 is the most sought after truck in history. I’ve had 8 of them in my life. I have a 93 sitting next to the barn that’s going in this spring for a full overhaul. That will probably be my last truck.
How can they moan about the 1 piece windscreen freezing up, when as you've proven with European trucks the windscreens on them are even bigger and they don't have any issues. Do they not offer a heated Windscreen option?
I love the comments here on the Euro fanboys inserting their precious Volvo FH16-780 and Scania 770S and bragging about the power output while completely ignoring the fact that: 1. China has an 800 horsepower Sinotruk and 840 horsepower Shacman. But we don't talk about that here to protect the reputation of their precious Euro trucks. 2. As if all trucks in Europe are FH16-780s and 770S, a lot of models aren't and theg typically have 400 to 500 horsepower. 3. These computer controlled engines are just a laptop or chiptune and a few bolt-ons away from 700? 800? Perhaps even more than 1,000 horsepower. Hell, some of these work trucks are tuned North of 1,500 horsepower. (Waiting for the "bUt iT diDn'T cOmE fRoM tHe fAcTorY tHaT wAy." 😅
1. Not many Europeans want a low quality chinese shitbox, no matter how much power it has. Chinese products aren't exactly famous for their quality. 2. You're correct about that. The market for those 700+ hp trucks is pretty small. These are expensive too. That's why only Scania and Volvo are making them. Less powerful trucks are enough for the big market on the European continent. 3. Yes. you can take out 1000 hp just by programming the engine's computer. And for example Scania makes marine versions of the same 16 litre V8 with up to 1150 hp. But It isn't only about the engine power. It's about the whole driveline and the frame. It has to withstand the huge torque and has to be optimized for it. Also cooling down the engine needs some new solutions.
Bruce made fun of kenworth but now kenworth is the only one who makes a real truck now. The 589 is basically just as crappy as any other Tupperware truck. W900l forever!
Six analog guages at the secondary dash and a fully digital main dash? Why not go digital all the way on the secondary dash with unlimited sensors attachable to the secondary panel? Customization becomes way easier!
Replacing the new one piece windshield is going to cost an arm and leg. Old design (flat glass) allows for partial replacement and probably cheaper. Bad move Pete.
U are correct, I replaced 1 windshield per year in my 567 when I had it. The huge one piece windshield is a rock catcher. Pure crap. $500 + to replace Joke
The 589 is a good looking truck. I like all the room it now has over the 389. When you’re in the truck for 6 days a week, loading your belongings and groceries and climbing over it all to squeeze through the seats and put it away in the sleeper and having to take it all back out at the end of the week, gets very frustrating. As I get older, I choose comfort more than anything now. As long as they can build a good deep visor to cover enough of the windshield, it’ll be great. In a couple years of these trucks being out on the road, all the naysayers should be “done driving” anyways,or they’ll be bragging about how much better their 589 is than the other guys truck
I know there are more modern trucks in the US to but come on a non split window, thermostat, cup holders, hydraulic clutch. Whats next a synchronized gearbox or maybe a 6x2 with a liftable axel so you don´t need tandems on the highways? this could literally be a presentation from the 70s in Europe.
Wtf is a “gearbox” ??? 😂 Why do you need to lift the axles anyways?? Just more stupid shit to break and give issues… nah we do things differently over here. I build Semis trucks for the US military and everything is very basic no fancy shit to fail and give issue and yet everyone needs are help around the world. 😂
@@crandonborth so you claim one air bag for the lift and one less driveaxel is more advanced then a tandem with two driveaxels? nonsens, here in the northen europe even some timber trucks have 6x2 even tho the load is almost 2x more then in the US because we can lift the tag and spread some sand while you guys but on your chains in anger just admit it you guys are stuck in the 70s ohh i remember now we already tag lifts back then to! And syncronized "transmissions"
359 and 379.for me Bruce. Nothing over 2014 make . At 58 I'm old school I learned on the 379 Peterbilt from my uncle talk me on The Voice with long frame I walked up hills on 40 walked with a kitty cat. I prefer a kitty cat in my Peterbilt rather than a Cummins or a Detroit and 15 speed .
Legend died with the 379. 389 is a throwaway truck. Driven all of them the Old dash 379 was the last good pete. Had 4 new 389s and they were all garbage. Not even just emissions either. Rattling interiors that fall apart. Having to wrap the seatbelt around the passenger seats that shake and rattle.Stupid ass exhaust bushings you have to keep handfulls in the door because they start beating the cab. Shit half tilt steering column and if it has air ride front the valve that flips dumping the air if you hit a big bump the list goes on. They are a poser wagon
The 589 has a one-piece curved windshield that is slanted, the cab looks as if all of the panels are bonded on (no visible rivets anywhere, except the hood), and the door handles are also different.
I'm interested in what people do to these trucks. currently I'm not a huge fan of these new truck but I'm not a huge Pete fan in the first place. I would rather the W990 for the new flat hood trucks.
“I don’t think peterbilt would have done anything to make serviceability more difficult” 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 as a Paccar tech I can tell you yes, yes they would and they do 😂
There’s nothing like a 379. I really like the 359 but I think the 379 is a better everyday truck. The new 589 is a very nice truck in your video. I guess it will take a while to see.
I am a die hard Kenworth guy, i love my 900"s, but having said that, a Peterbilt 389 is also a very nice truck. What i will give Peterbilt alot of credit here for is the fact they did atleast keep somewhat of the classic look alive. Unlike Kenworth and their God awful 990.
hi guys im 62 my son just got a 2024 pete ext hood last year of them? not sure but he had a 22 pete and said this 2024 seems way more stabile in the wind and has way more power its a 18 speed one.not sure just going by what he told me its a midroof one.personally i like the big bunk ones.his is a dark forest green with white stripes and they airbrushed his name on door.he texted me yesterday it was getting bad bad fuel milage so they gonna look at that like 3
