Today two new plants join the garden, a fast growing and attractive Eucalyptus neglecta (really big leaves and a lovely scent) plus a hardy alternative to a tropical vine Parthenocissus Henryana - Chinese Virginia Creeper (amazing Autumn colour and beautiful exotic foliage). I look at some buying tips for hardy Eucalyptus trees, why Neglecta in particular is a great choice for smaller jungle, exotic or tropical style gardens then why I think why the tropical effect climber will really fit in with the exotic palms and tree ferns I grow too. It's a fast growing climbing plant so great for screening, covering walls or growing up trees but it's not a climber that'll get completely out of control and need daily maintenance / hacking back! I look at why personally I really enjoy having plants and trees that bring Autumn colour in my exotic garden too, and how they help bring a seasonal edge to a garden that's mainly about a tropical effect summer display. Just came across your content today and oh my gosh, are you a handsome lad! 😍 I also have a passion for eucalyptus trees having been born and raised in Northern California, they are everywhere here! Haha I’ve become a little obsessed as of late and have found several varieties that I am so excited to watch grow up. They include, red iron barks, silver dollar, baby blue, nicholii, citriodora, and one rainbow euc (deglupta)! I’m very excited for the rainbow euc. Hopefully it will thrive here like some of the others have. 🤞🏼

Great video George. I agree with everything you say about the neglecta, and would add they also smell good after a bit of rain. About 2-3 years on the leaves will start changing shape. If you have room for another Euc I would recommmend subcrenulata for the interesting bark.

Thanks, yes I'm enjoying the leaves while they're huge! That's great to know as we get plenty of rain here for most of the year. Thanks Emma! Hardy Eucalyptus have a whole article on growing in containers, realistically they have to be grown in airpots if you ever want to plant them out or give them away to be planted out eventually otherwise the roots can circle round. That being said there’s some smaller Eucs with really nice foliage on their site that might be better for a pot long term…

George, Eucalyptus are easy from seed, and some can reach 5 foot in a year. Chiltern seeds have a great range and guides to hardiness and are a great company to deal with. Loads of other exotics as well.

@@GeorgesJungleGarden now you are testing my memory...it was years ago, but I think viminalis?, was one. I will have a think about others. I used to grow stacks of trees from seed as a teenager, and there are consequently loads of random trees in hedgerows in the west Midlands.... In the garden where I am now I have Abies Koreana and concolor, cercis, metasequoia, walnut, betula utilis, pinus sylvestris and muricata all from seed, as well as things like euonymous, ulmus procera argentifolia, Jacqueline Hillier elm etc from cuttings. The Abies Concolor is perhaps the finest tree in the world, but I may be biased, I think I germinated it approx 20 to 25 years ago and it is about that height in feet.

Hi and thank you very much! If you check out my fire pit project update I did last week, you'll see it in the middle of there. I made the decision to cut it back quite hard, it was nearly the same height as the taller glaucescens behind it so a very fast grower! No problem. They’ll get to that height and continue if left unchecked unfortunately but Hardy Eucalyptus have got loads of great info on cutting and controlling them. The paucifloras and other dwarf varieties are best for smaller spaces but it’s well worth googling neglecta to see what they look like when mature - most tend to be bushier and more mounded trees, they just have the potential to get taller.

How do Eucalyptus fair with the UK winter temperatures?
@GeorgesJungleGarden
@GeorgesJungleGarden 3 года назад
Hi, the varieties vary in terms of hardiness, but personally I’ve gone for varieties with a good cold tolerance. My small plants sailed through last winter but it wasn’t a real test in terms of absolute cold. They still took a few nights of -5 or so and ice days in their stride.

I'm getting really useful feedback from other growers, would a neglecta have been better?
@GeorgesJungleGarden
@GeorgesJungleGarden 3 месяца назад
Hi and sorry for the delayed reply! I appreciate your kind words and my channel is still small in the scheme of things and enjoying the journey really is the key to growing a friendly and engaged community. As for your question, personally there's a couple of things I'd maybe say. Firstly, I tend to agree with Hardy Eucalyptus that it's a good idea to plant Eucs grown in air pots rather than relatively large plants in small conventional pots where the roots may have circled around potentially causing a weaker root system down the line. As for your variety decision, neglecta can still grow big but gunnii regularly and quickly get huge so personally I'd say they may cause issues with your fence line and it'll certainly radically change the view for the house behind in not too many years. Have you considered pauciflora 'Mount Buffalo' and the other paucifloras? They have beautiful foliage too, lovely bark and are certainly a lot more compact - definitely what I'd go for in a smaller garden or one close to neighbouring buildings. I have one and love it!

@@GeorgesJungleGarden I'm so grateful for your response, thank you for taking the time. Alas, common sense may need to prevail.
