A new city poll revealed many people feel the quality of life in San Francisco is declining. Betty Yu talked to current and former residents about the disappointing results.
Started when Gavin was mayor and when Ed Lee came in after by letting Tech companies come into the city tax free. The rich fucked the city over yet they’re the ones yelling gentrification and complaining about homeless when they’re the main cause.
Right. Either it started with getting rid of the insane asylums where most of the homeless had refuge, or bringing in free narcotics which drew addicts from across the country.

This is so sad. I remember visiting SF when I was a teen and fell in love the city. I visited again recently, and was shocked when the Uber driver passed quite a lot of tents lining the sidewalk near hotel. I hadn’t seen that before on my last trip, and actually thought we’d gotten lost. Hope SF can become safe again.

@Jimmy Jack spoken like someone who never has been to the entire state and explored the areas outside of the major cities. The state may be run by assholes in the capital but local officials still have authority to change their localities. There are good examples of well run republican and democrat towns in the rural parts. Unfortunately the major cities are marred by corruption on either political party.
The homelessness problem should have been addressed a long time ago. SF native here. The sense of community and friendliness has left the city a while ago. It’s was really sad to see. I’m so glad I moved away from Cali. Stay safe everyone, wherever you are. Sending y’all peace and love
Studies in rats showed that if you build communities, drug problems are gone. Communities in SF were destroyed and now we have general drug use all around the city. It's really sad. Where did you move to if you don't mind saying?

5k a month where I live will get me a huge house with 7 rooms huge lot for RV and boat with plenty of space for horses and a pool. And that's in California.
Yep exactly, I only stop there for a couple of days on my annual holiday to the US every year and its not worth the $200-300 or even 400 a night to stay in the city when the risk his so great.

Real estate owners charging $6,000/$7,000 for a 1 BR apartment so that even people making good money working in the tech industry can't afford rent. There's a serious problem when you're working 40 hrs a week and can't afford to rent an apartment. There's capitalism and then there's greed. Then complaining about the mess they helped create.
So the people mismanaging the city say they need more money… In what area of your life would you give someone more money that is failing you at every level? Would you give more money to a mechanic that returns your car worse off than when you left it with them? And after several times of this, they tell you, “well you just need to give me more money to do the job right.”
there are a lot of factors here. Including the fact that a lot of homeless people move from other states to come to california because of the better weather.
@@joseguzman5875 California's more conservative counties, although affected by the overall state policies fair better than SF and LA which are extremely liberal. Maybe they are too liberal to send homeless back? Maybe there are plenty of free stuff? Maybe what homeless does do not have consequences? And weather is the primary reason we have this issue? Blame whatever you will. Unless people truely see the root cause of this pandemic, it will never be resolved.
The contractors are building gated townhome communites and apartment complexes. California is moving toward the destruction of single family neighborhoods. Meanwhile, people can buy or rent their way away from having to directly deal with issues like homelessness. For cities, there is no big payoff in housing the homeless. It is the same with so-called "low income or 'workforce'" housing: it seems our community or political leaders would rather shut people up behind walls or in complexes than offer a path to home ownership by rehabilitating neighborhoods. 🙄
I used to volunteer at a shelter in SF when I lived there. 1 in 50 of them earnestly want to address their addiction issues. 9 in 50 desperately want help for their mental health crises. 4/5, for various reasons, aren't seeking a meaningful level of help. We need more housing and wraparound services for the 1/5 who will genuinely want help, but we need to not delude ourselves about the 4/5 who need a superhuman level of intervention (or, when they're too far gone, incarceration)

San Francisco is a dystopia controlled by magical thinking, well intentioned activists who hold the city hostage with bad policy. Meanwhile high paying tech jobs, which have been making things really great for a few, have driven up taxes, cost of living and rent up for everyone else, essentially wiping out the middle class. Now those tech jobs have gone remote and those employees and their money are leaving. The crime ridden shit hole with its “compassionate” leniency on drug abuse, theft and vagrancy are all that’s left. Don’t worry though. If you fall on hard times, lose your job and your home and then succumb to addiction and despair, this city is a perfect place for you wallow in it. The open drug market that operates with impunity will see to it that you are never left wanting for fentanyl and heroin.
We're not all drug addicts... Some of us are just going through a lot and trying to get on our feet. I work and I'm not addicted to drugs, yet I live in an old broken down RV on the street.
It’s not only here. It is nationwide. My recent trip to the Midwest from SF showed me that we are very lucky to live here. I went to a town with three abandoned factories. There was a huge abandoned hospital, with broken windows, a parking lot with weeds growing and vermin everywhere. Across the streets, kids were playing in the middle of the street and every third house had been boarded up. San Francisco might be going downhill, but I still don’t know anywhere better to live. And I’ve lived in four states and the Virgin Islands. If we could continue to deport our homeless back to where they came from (almost none of them ever had a home here), that would be a start. We are too kind and taken advantage of.

@B. Tacktheritrix I would say this: SF is handling this crisis as well as they possibly good and then some. Do you realize that the homeless on our streets are sent here on bus tickets from red areas: Modesto, Stockton, Fresno, Bakersfield? These places don’t want them there. Almost no homeless on our streets ever had a home here, unless they are released prisoners on drugs. I have never personally seen feces in the street, other than dog poo, and I consider that a gross exaggeration. I will say that the homeless who came here voluntarily are very smart people as I would rather be homeless here than have a home in Texas or another flyover state. I have lived in four states coast to coast and I don’t call that living. I need culture and intellectual stimulation. I moved here from the Virgin Islands, which has spectacular natural beauty and zero culture. I couldn’t stand it. I grew up in Ohio, and that’s where I saw the bombed out hospital and horrific living conditions. You would think it was third world. Those poor kids playing among vermin with abandoned homes was heartbreaking and hard to believe it was America. It was disgusting quite honestly. I think SF is handling this crisis as well as they can. We have 30,000 homeless on our streets. The city is building shipping container homes that cost $400,000 per unit and are self contained with bathrooms and showers. They will be given for free to homeless!! Just remember that these people never lived here before being on the streets and now they will have a free home. That is amazing. If you talk to homeless they will tell you they come from somewhere else and they never could have afforded here at any point in their lives. Now they will be given an opportunity to live in America’s most beautiful city. Lucky them!
What the mayor has to say about this? She's blaming the police, the homeless, the offices being remote and moving out but herself. LMAO. She should be the first to be punished.
Sadly, the problems in SF are too great to fix in any meaningful way. The best course of action is to move. I left California and moved to Arizona and the quality of life has gone up tremendously. Gas is cheaper, rent is cheaper, the spaces are bigger, homelessness way down with a few exceptions (Phoenix), I don't worry about car break ins, I can got on walks at night and feel safe. Just get out of California. I did and never looked back!
It's not the policies that caused this. It's the economic reality that caused it. The "policies" are simply a reaction to it. I would fully support that these companies leave and go to Texas. And I can assure you that whoever receives them will soon experience the problems of SF.
yeah no. every other first world country has "blue policies" (affordable housing, higher minimum wage, universal health care) and are clean, thriving and has very little homelessness. surprisingly, when you take care of the poorest/most at risk, everyone else doesn't have to deal with them going crazy in the streets. also red states suffer from extreme poverty, obsesity and sickness, just not homelessness like california. -this is coming from someone who has lived in other first world nations. its extremely hard to fall into homelessness and poverty in other places therefore the streets are less shitty. the problem is not people fleeing it is AMERICA and our divisiveness, seeing each other by race and voting party rather than all americans needing help.

Former NYC resident: I now live in a Senior Mobile Home Park on the Atlantic coast in the deep deep south. I am safe, happy, in a drug free environment, and cops 5 min away if needed. I've never been so happy. Both my children and their families have moved close by. = Double happy!

Confirmation bias? Come on now try harder than that. As to how gentrification is being made possible in SF due to laws? RENT CONTROL. Landlords are not able to profit from renting out housing units because they have to set rent way bellow market rate in order to make it affordable for low income SF residents. Many landlords simply can not afford to do that as they are mortgaging these units and are expecting their tents to help pay this. So instead they convert these housing units into commercial use only, currently allowed, and thereby leasing to business entities. This in turn reduces the amount of available units for actual housing. Only the rich can afford these "commercial" units. We are talking about several hundreds of dollars per square feet...almost thousands. Can the average SF resident pay 10-20k a month? So the rich white liberals from silicone valley move in, as they are the only ones who can afford it. There is ZERO incentive for any contractor to build housing in San Fransisco. Why would anyone be so stupid to build housing just to lose money on it and be in miserable debt? Only commercial building is financially viable but even that has been tricky. If the rent control is dropped then rent can be placed at market rate which would put huge forces to lower rent prices. Little known secrete....rich people don't like paying high prices too. Just like any intelligent renter or buyer they are going to look for the best rate and landlords will have to compete for that. Rent control is well intention but it has not helped anyone.

I lived in the city for almost 20 years, and I thought when I left I would be sad. I was only sad about leaving friends. The crime, homelessness and the weird priorities of the Mayor and Board of Supervisors is just bad. Arguing about vaping instead of working on crime and drugs. I love San Francisco, it was a dream when I first moved there, but that dream is gone.

The city is spending all of its resources trying to make it difficult to drive. SF has been steadily going downhill. It has become a place of taxes and homelessness. Crime is on the uptick. The mayor and DA are making things worse.

not just housing for the homeless but the city need to invest in subsidized apartments for home ownership as well... owning homes is the first step to prevent homelessness as many people i'm sure is 1 pay check away from being homeless.

Was always a "sketchy" area. Not all neighbors but quite a few back in the 1970s. Used to live in Berkley and we would go to Frisco for drugs, sex, and so on.
San Francisco used to be a beautiful city with a rich culture. It’s now a neglected hell hole full of bland boring techie and homeless people. The City by the Bay has lost its soul.

I went to San Francisco for 18 months at SFMTA and I HATED every single second that I was there. Saw people urinating & pooping on the street in the middle of the day quite often. And people appeared so detached from reality.
